hard knocks showed they could have traded down with the Giants and ended up with Malik Nabers

and, gotten #39, which was Braden Fiske, DT

easy in hindsight, but probably the right move
Maybe, or maybe 10 years from now we will laugh at the idea of making that trade. Hard to say in the middle of the first season.

I think @DVontel and @Chopper0080 were on the take Alt and then get Brian Thomas Jr route (if no MHJ at 4) right?

His downfield speed is next level

I’m like 98% sure I wasn’t on that BTJ route at all lol
Might be getting you mixed up with someone.

I think you suggested we consider looking at Mitchell/Thomas with our 2nd 1st round pick once it seemed like Qbs weren't going top 3 (on the chance we miss out MHJ).

Edit: Yea you were Alt and then get a WR 2nd day I believe.

fwiw: my overall point isnt about MHJ vs some other WR

it is that we put wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too much reliance on the pre draft rankings between the 1st best prospect at a position and the 2nd or 3rd or 4th best prospect at a position.

In the face of Will Anderson this was never going to happen.
MO had used his goodwill on the previous draft which is fine. Plus don't know how much of a fit Nabers would be with this team. Nabers is for sure way more aggressive in going after the football and beating his man than Marv is.

Hopefully all this is just MHJ needing to mature and Petzing getting WRs involved.

We would be lamenting Monti for doing this as Nabers in our offense wouldn’t be making all these low percentage catches. Where as MHJ would probably be going off in a proper offensive scheme

draft controversy only sticks if the move clearly doesnt work out for you.

had the Cards come away with Nabers and Fiske -- we would be calling Monti a genius right now

Once Maye went #3 the Giants weren’t trading up. They passed on McCarthy at #6.

I believe @DVontel @Vacard @azsouthendzone were the Nabers advocates prior to the draft. I don’t think they were crazy about Nabers from a chemistry perspective and I wouldn’t be shocked if Bidwill pushed for the legacy son of a HOF WR.

I’m not sure if Fiske would be performing to the standard he is playing now if he was drafted here. He wouldn’t have a good EDGE like Verse to help take attention off of him.

I thought the Giants preferred Nabers to MHJ.
Anyway, I think Nabers probably isn't as good in the Petzing offense as he has been in New York.

Nabers is finding ways to get open through double teams despite NY having a joke running game, no mobile QB distracting the defense, and no superstar TE to draw coverage. Nabers isn't being schemed open, he's just faster and has better fakes/double moves. He's harder to cover from a physical talent standpoint.

But the real pick was Bowers. Bowers has more catches than any player in the NFL right now, more than Lamb/Chase and he's a monster blocker. He is the best TE in the league as a rookie and TE is supposed to be the hardest position to make the NFL jump to. He just got finished destroying Trent McDuffie last game.

Yeah we have McBride, but we already live in 12/13 personnel. Bowers would have just pushed Higgins down the depth chart. We could have gotten Ladd McConkey in the 2nd or used the late 1st rounder (another guy who is significantly outperforming MHJ). McConkey is a killer in the slot and we could have kept Michael Wilson as X.

This summarizes the whole situation. Agreed

I talked about Bowers at #4 in a half trolling way but that’s a crazy thought in hindsight. We’d have Gronk & Hernandez minus the murder.

There was a precedent set with the Patriots that has never been tried again: Building an offense around a strong running game and two ELITE Tight ends. We had our chance

He is not Chase or Jefferson which is who I was hoping he would be.

Small print on my laptop but does that say 48 out of 86 for Fitz equals 50% catch percentage? Or is that a 96 and I need my reading glasses?

Minus the Brady, I don’t know if the Gronk/Hernandez is as attractive as it may seem on it’s face.

The beauty is of course you can force matchup nightmares all day long. If a team plays it's run defense against you then you have 2 elite pass catching TE's on the field they have to cover with their run defense. If they play their pass defense against you, then you have 3 TE's to block in the run game.

That said I'm not convinced Bowers is that great of a blocker yet, not awful but not great, but then neither is Higgins
