To say that Terrell Suggs lacks physical talent is just plain silly.

If Suggs was .5 of a second faster everyone would be foaming at the mouth. A HALF SECOND!!! Does it really mean that much?? Not to me. What I want is sacks and chaos in the backfield. Suggs brings that. Leftwich does not.

It took me 30 seconds to write this and we are worried about a half a second....Truely funny.

Thomas Burke also led the nation in sacks his senior year and was an undersized end who looked quick off the ball against college competiton. I don't remember his combine numbers but I just can't get this haunting thought out of my head regarding Suggs.

I did notice Suggs looked soft around the mid section when I saw video of his workout on ESPN - maybe (I hope) he put on the wrong kind of weight to impress scouts. It does take some time to add lean muscle, unless you are David Boston.

Maybe suggs could borrow some roids from Burke. Burke was a 3rd round pick. There is a bit of difference between the 2.

As Ed has pointed out many times.....Burke was considered a late first day, early second day pick. Suggs is a much better player.

So you can honestly say

That your blind devotion to Suggs has nothing to do with his status as an ASU player?

That if he played for say....Washington State...you would have the same opinion?

My opinon has no basis off the school he plays at. Im a UofA fan, and cried as he chased our QB around the field all game.

Yeah I would actually, but I might not have had the "visual" evidence if he had played at WSU.

Go watch some tape, and put down the workout videos. Football is played on grass, not a gym.

Leonard Davis at the combine was 6'5" 370 pounds, and ran a 5.26 Forty.

Over forty yards, Big coming in .4 seconds behind a smallish speed rusher??

Armageddon!!

You are correct

Suggs is strong...super quick...and will definitely be the next "Derrick Thomas or Lawrence Taylor"

I believe that was whom you compared him to Krang?

Let me rephrase my statement since you guys want to take it so literally.

Suggs lacks GREAT physical talent. He won't be a dominant player because of his lack of GREAT physical ability.

Krang

I don't need to watch tape. I went to several ASU games last year thanks to their obscenely cheap ticket prices. And I will admit that Suggs was an awesome college player. Unbelievable college player.

My concern is that he won't put up anything close to that in the NFL, where he will face the best of the best week in and week out. His 40 time isn't the concern for me as much as his size and strength are. His 40 time is gravy.

I definitely think Suggs skill at DE will get him many sacks...like I said...8-10 a year is what I think is a realistic number.

BUT...I don't think he will ever develop into a dominant defensive end...unless he transforms himself physically like General Chaos is saying. Which is possible...anything is possible.

So you think that a 20 year old kid doesn't get any stronger, quicker, or faster? Hmmmm....

I don't know if I ever made those comparisons....where did I say that?

If they postpone the draft one more week, Sanders and Section 11 will have Suggs rated down to not being able to qualify for the Special Olympics!

Could he become stronger or faster?

Maybe.

Depends on his devotion to his body. I don't like that he got significantly slower to get stronger. Like I said...Boston did the same thing and it made him a worse player.

If we are going to judge Suggs based solely on his college production, then I say let him stay at his comfort weight and not try to make him something he isn't.

Ha! I was wondering if anyone else would catch the Rein Long reference.

No I won't have Suggs rated down even further. I have been saying this since workout 2. My opinion on him doesn't worsen every day. I think he will be a decent but not great defensive end. Someone I would take in the first round...but not someone that I think warrants the #6 pick.

In college Big ran a 5.1. In training camp at Texas he ran with the running backs. No joke.

Casey Hampton and Shaun Rogers both ran at 5.2 at over 310 pounds each.

Suggs is slow. There isn't a whole lot a gray area.
If we're gambling with the #6 pick that he can buck the trend like Jerry Rice did, then I think we're complete fools.

Everyone has to have an opinion. I definitely agree on players trying to change too much to fit that scout's prototype. I think the prime example of this is the much maligned Leeland McElroy.

No one remembers McElroy still has the kickoff return/TD ratio record for the NCAA. He was about 160 as a Freshman. Lightning fast, and the only back besides Barry Sanders who I've ever seen who could cut horizontally at full speed. As he moved up the RB depth chart, he started getting dinged quite often. When he went into his last season, he was considered one of the top 3 for the Heisman. He hurt his ankle and missed a lot of the rest of the season. Scouts started saying he was too light and injury prone for a RB, so he put on 30lbs between the end of his sophomore season and when we drafted him. He didn't lose much 40 speed, but he did lose his quickness and cutting ability. He would've been better off staying at his more natural weight and let OC's figure out how to use him effectively. He was a TD machine at A&M.

Pro Football Weekly quote from the 2001 combine...

"It wasn’t just running backs raising eyebrows with their 40-times. Gargantuan Texas OT Leonard Davis, who said he was "going to put on a show," zipped out a 5.2 40, which isn’t too shabby for a man weighing 370 pounds."

It is only a half second. But, it's also true.
