It’s anyone’s guess what the Los Angeles Rams will do with their first-round pick next month. Sitting at No. 26 overall, it’s hard to gauge which prospects will still be on the board. Even more difficult is predicting whether Les Snead and Sean McVay will target a wide receiver, tight end, right tackle, cornerback or a different position.

Former Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum released a new mock draft on Tuesday where he plays GM for every team in Round 1. Rather than picking what he believes will happen, he made selections based on what he would do as the team’s GM.

For the Rams, the choice didn’t seem all that hard. He went with Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart, a polarizing prospect who could be selected anywhere from the middle of Round 1 to sometime on Day 2. With Matthew Stafford getting up there in age, Tannenbaum would prioritize finding the team’s next quarterback.

Dart excelled in Lane Kiffin's scheme at Ole Miss, throwing 72 touchdown passes over his three years in Oxford. He has risen draft boards in the past few months, too. He had a great week at the Senior Bowl and was, in my opinion, the best thrower at the combine. Dart has a sturdy lower frame and really good movement skills, and he has a lot of upside. Matthew Stafford's contract restructure means he will be the Rams' starter for at least another season, but if I'm taking over the Rams' GM role today, I'm absolutely eyeing the future.

Dart has the traits of being a franchise quarterback, from a big arm to impressive mobility. He needs to improve his anticipation when throwing downfield and his decision-making can be suspect at times, but there will be a team that believes in his potential.

That team could very well be the Rams, who don’t have a succession plan in place for when Stafford retires. Dart would make a lot of sense for Los Angeles and Snead said this offseason that the Rams want to find a franchise quarterback “ASAP,” but it’s easier said than done.

And selecting Dart at No. 26 would force the Rams to wait until the 90th pick to take a player who could contribute in 2025. Those are the factors Snead and McVay must weigh for the next month.
