The rising star that you need to know about....
Sometimes you just know. Sometimes there's a player that you just know will be great. So great, in fact, that you tell everyone you know how great he's going to be, just so you can wait a few years and try to look like a modern age Einstein in the process. You've done that right? Okay, maybe it's just me, but lucky for you, I'm at it again. I've definitely got that feeling back again, and as Will Ferrell would say, it's glorious.
Darren McFadden came to the University of Arkansas expecting to compete for carries and hopefully win a starting job. It's a shame what happened next. Not only did he exceed his and everyone else's expectations, he shattered them. He massacred those same expectations to the tune of 1,100 yards and 11 touchdowns in a very tough defensive Southeastern Conference. Those are pretty respectable stats for any freshman, but considering the ineptitude of his team, his stats begin to suggest a little bit more. To think, his own high school coach, the same man who saw him develop into the five-star prospect he is today, even thought it would take him a few years to adjust to college ball. Everyone makes mistakes.
This wouldn't make much sense without a guarantee of some sorts, so rather than disappoint, I'll serve one up. Darren McFadden is going to be one of the best backs that you'll ever see. In an era where talented halfbacks are flooding the NFL, this might come as an outlandish claim to some, but I assure you, there are no delusions here. This guy is going to remind you of the same player who just won the Heisman Trophy. He's even going to be BETTER than Mr. Heisman himself, Reggie Bush. Now there's a whopper. Listen, I'm not tarnishing anything Reggie has done, just purely setting up the stage for the next act if you will. McFadden is going to make you say to yourself, "Wow, this guy is amazing!" over and over again, and maybe then you'll take notice if you haven't already done so. He'll be the hot topic at the water cooler on Monday mornings. "Dude, did you catch McFadden's 93 yard run on Saturday? It was sick!" He's even going to lead a football team that has only won nine games in the past two years back into the public eye, with the help of a hotshot quarterback, and known flip-flopper, Mitch Mustain. All that and he's only a freshman.
How can anyone make a claim that one player who only has played one season in his career is going to be better than a majority of the greats currently in the NFL? That's what you want to know right? Well, maybe it was Darren?s 70 yard run where he looked like a missile en route to the end zone against the sacred Alabama defense in only his fourth collegiate game? Or maybe it was his 70 yard touchdown run against a stout Georgia defense about a month later? Maybe it was his 64 yard scamper to the end zone yet again on November 11th? Those help a bit, but maybe it's the fact that McFadden led the SEC in yards per carry (6.3)? Maybe it's that he happened to destroy the Arkansas freshman record book, and become only the seventh back in SEC history to chalk up 1,000 yards in a season? Maybe it's his speed? He runs a 10.8 100 meter dash. Maybe it's his versatility? He was a four sport star athlete in high school. Maybe it's the way he runs? He reminds me of a cheetah. Maybe it's just all of those things and so much more that contribute me making claims of this magnitude? Bingo.
So if you didn't get the chance to see Darren make opposing defenses look foolish this past year, don't fret, because he'll be at it once again come August. But this is where it starts to get scary. He's only going to get better and so is his team, so if you pay attention, you'll get the chance to watch him shine on a national stage. Like I said, sometimes you just know, and I definitely know about this one. But just to make sure, wait a few years before you start to call me Einstein.
