heard on the radio in flagstaff..frank garcia to miss 4 games

I was unable to attend training camp as my wife is ill..I did have the radio on in the background (600 AM in flagstaff) and evan cohen (formerly of kdus) has a show on from 5 - 6 pm..He reported than frank garcia has will be suspended for the 1st 4 games of the season for using a banned substance..He used a cold medicine that contained...ephedra

This is a bummer because we will probably keep him on the roster and get nothing out of him the 1st 4 games..he can still play in the preseason games and attend practice until the suspension begins..

Cardinals | Garcia Suspended Four Games - from www.KFFL.com
Wed, 6 Aug 2003 19:22:33 -0700

Mike Jurecki, of KDUS Sports Radio in Phoenix, reports Arizona Cardinals C Frank Garcia has been suspended after testing positive for ephedra. He'll miss the first four games of the season after losing his appeal to the league on the matter.

Was this his second time? How come he gets suspended and D. Boston doesn't?

Having marijuana is A OK. It's actually good for you.

Cold medicine is bad for you, especially when you have a cold.

Well, when a loved one is Ill, it certainly makes things like a football suspension seem small in comparison. I hope your wife is OK and she gets well soon. My best wishes go out to you and her.

Ephedra is a big thing now since the Corry Stringer thing, since it can dehidrate(SP?) very easy and that can be put teh NFL at risk. Not just that it is a preformance inhancement drug, a mild over the counter steriod. Jim Miller was supended for it as well right after he had his 400 yeard plus game.

I guess we will have to wait until someone dies of a marijuana overdose before the NFL suspends people for that as well.

Am I missing something? Since when did the NFL not suspend players for pot violations?

Yea, that was a first time offence. I think the take action the 2nd or third time. But you're right, they should be punished for the first violation.

I don't think players should be suspended for the first violation, but there should be a good-sized fine.

Remember, it's usually not their first violation, just the first time they get caught.

Eight-year veteran offensive lineman Frank Garcia, in his first training camp with the Arizona Cardinals, has been suspended for the first four games of the regular season after testing positive for the banned substance ephedra.

Garcia, 31, will be permitted to continue working with the Cardinals in camp and can even participate in the preseason games. The suspension, which came after Garcia was unsuccessful with his appeal, will begin the week before the regular-season opener, Sept. 7 at Detroit. Barring any setbacks, he can return for the fifth game of the season, Oct. 5 at Dallas.

During the suspension, Garcia will not be permitted to work out at the Cardinals complex or to have any contact with franchise officials.

He will forfeit $154,117 in base salary, the prorated amount of the $655,000 Garcia was scheduled to earn in 2003. Garcia signed a two-year contract with the Cardinals this spring as an unrestricted free agent.

The former University of Washington standout had been working as a backup center, and he was playing behind Pete Kendall, who moved to the hub position from guard in camp.

In previous stints with Carolina (1995-2000) and St. Louis (2001-02), Garcia appeared in 118 games and started 89 of them. All but five of those starts came during his tenure with the Panthers.

Garcia may participate in training camp and the Cardinals’ four preseason games. His suspension begins on Sunday, August 31. The Cardinals conclude their preseason schedule against the Minnesota Vikings on August 28.

The diffrence is that smoking pot will not enhance their preformance like a steriod can do(even though Ephedra is a very mild one). People that have been hurt by the drug did not overdose, their bodies did not respond well and with the excess workouts with the limited water(dehydration), so there was a deadly combination. Pot is a illeagal drug and that is the only reason why there are fines and supensens, but IMO the NFL looks at is more like a mix between alcohol abuse and something that is against the law, (ie. speeding) so putting them together is treated more like a DUI. Plus didn't David Boston also have cocain in his system, or was that just a rumor.

So is running a red light or speeding. Does that mean that everything ilegal should mean that a player should be suspended - or are people taking the whole Boston leaving thing a little too far. Hell - I remember people saying that players deserve a second chance and all that stuff before Boston became a "cancer" and left town - no one was advocating he should have been suspended then. Personally - the NFL policy makes sense to me - get cuaght once - slap on the wrist with fine - get cuaght twice - you're not learning you're lesson and you're making an even worse representation of the league - then you should get a suspension - but for pot - well that seems to be silly to me - why not alchohol - because the law says it's legal - do you know how much worse drinking is for you thasn smoking pot -take it from me - I do a lot of both - and if I could quit one thing to make my life better, it would be alcohol - but that's a whole nother argument altogether.

Man,

Frank Garcia just met with the media a few minutes ago. He is visibly shaken. I really feel for him. He talked about his family.

He will miss out on $154,117 in base salary. It sucks that you can snort coke and smoke weed and get a second chance. You can't take alergy medicine.

Channels 10 and 12 were there. Tune in.

Is this a knee jerk reaction by the league because they are truely concerned about the players health? How dangerous is ephedra?

...or does the NFL just not want to be sued?

I think this all started with the death of Korey Stringer and the death of the Northwestern football player. They both were taking supplements that contained ephedra.

So now, anything with ephedra is a banned substance.

Garcia called the trainers and asked if he could take NyQuill. He took it once...no relief. He took it twice...no relief. It is then, without permission, that he took his wife's over the counter medicine.

Was it something with psuedoephedrine in it? Its probably the most common cold and allergy medicine available over the counter. In fact it can be down right difficult to find one that does not contain the stuff. It clears the sinus passages and keeps you from getting so tired (typically). But it is does contain some ephedra.
If that's what it was its hard to believe its going to cost him $154,117 'cause he took the most common remedy for a stuffy nose. Bet this stuff becomes a sticking point in the next CBA negotiations.
:(

That's totally opposite of what Garcia, and LaCava, said on CH 10. Not trying to fight with you Jim, just reporting what was said on the story.

Did you see the report?
