Not sure why he is playing WR. The guy clearly doesn't stand a chance to make the team at that position.

The guys sure looks the part and has some speed. However I don't think he is a good enough Football player to make this team.

One thing I noticed about Garvin in camp: The first practice the coaches had him running nothing but go routes and he couldn't outrun anyone. It shocked me. I expected him to blow right by the CB and whatever CB was covering him stayed right on his hip.

Every practice after that he was moved to the slot and started doing more crossing routes. Like what we saw last night. Odd.

As far as Toler being as fast as DRC? No way. Toler (in the practices that I saw which were the first 3) has very good change of direction ability. Guys were trying double and triple moves on him and he was staying glued to them. I heard in the later practices that he didn't do so well.

A great return game not only helps the offense, it helps the defense. Field position is everything in the NFL.

The coaches just have three more games to decide if Garvin is truly a great returner or a hit-and-miss returner (not nearly as valuable, especially with a player without an honest position).

I thought this discussion went very well. We had opinions from one extreme to the other and yet the majority would agree that the outcome will be determined by events on the field. For my part, I will trust the evaluation and decisions of the coaches on Mr. Garvin and the roster.

You're the epitome of a big dumb *****.

:D

That may be. :)

But unless this kid runs at least one may take two to the house he will be watching NFL football from home on Sundays.

How many KR TDs have the other guys gotten? We don't have vintage Hester, Leon Washington, or Joshua Cribbs on the roster. We have a guy that lost KR duties due to poor performance (Breaston) and guys that play important roles elsewhere (DRC, Rolle and potentially Wells).

If Garvin is even an average kick returner, he's still the best option we got.

Wasn't there a rule change affecting kickoffs last year.

I know the # of returns for TDs was way down in 2008 (12 with only one KR having more than one TD) from 2007 (25 with 5 guys having multiple TD returns).

Yes there is. The intent is to reduce injuries:
"There will be a 15-yard penalty called if more than two receiving-team players line up within 2 yards of each other to lead the blocking."

This is from an article with quotes from our own Sean Morey. link please.... http://www.azcentral.com/sports/cardinals/articles/2009/05/04/20090504spt-cardsfeat.html

There are other considerations like "intent". see here: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/sh...-rule-has-the-potential-for-co?urn=nfl,166925

Some one is going to have a bad penalty called on them during a great return. If it is not us, I will just laugh.

PEACE!! Give Garvin his 3 more weeks....
What she said. A lot can happen in three more pre-season games. As far as punts go, Breaston is a little dinged up and my hunch is that the Rolle experiment is over. My bet is that Garvin is the first one to field a punt for us Saturday. We need to know if he can handle it before we worry about keeping him on the roster.

For some reason I thought the NFL implemented that rule last year. So the change in TD returns was just a result of better coverage.

This was an interesting note from the article especially for guys like Garvin:

"You're used to having guys in the same position because they knew they were going to be taking on the wedge," he said. "But now you might find teams going to smaller, quicker, faster guys because there will be more single blocks.

Doubt it. If we cut him, I guarantee someone will pick him up because of his speed and potential.

A lot of focus on NCAA kickoffs in the most recent ESPN Mag (Thomas Weber got a nice profile :sparky:) But they cited a lot of NFL stats such as something like a major percentage of ACL injuries happening on kickoffs, for instance). So +1 to those who are concerned losing a needed starter to injury in a role he doesn't have to be filling.

Also, with the elimination of the blocking wedge for 2009, that makes a strong return game even more crucial, no?

I would also like to see LSH get a shot as a returner, although I agree with most that Garvin looked good, last Thursday. LSH has that quick change of direction running syle, which suits a PR. JMO.

John Niyo of the Detroit News reports that the Lions cut running back Cedric Peerman, cornerback DeAngelo Smith, defensive tackle Terrance Taylor and wide receiver Michael Ray Garvin.

No shock there. He sucks.

Sorry Shzm but LSH is a more than capable return man.

Fast enough to take it to the house like he did last year, is fast enough for me.

LSH is the best value we have on the roster, IMO.

Extremely under-rated role player for our team.
