I'm glad they are biting the bullet and moving to a 4-3. Yes this season will most likely have it's growing pains but it will be better for the future.

Also with so many teams moving to a 3-4 over the past years it makes finding 4-3 players a little easier. This league is cyclical as it bounces between 3-4 and 4-3 in popularity.

The number of teams running base 4-3 or 3-4 is about even and has been for years.

Need another DE as several have posted. Golden coming off a major injury and undersized to be a 3 down player at DE. #2 CB still a big concern. Bynes as our starting MLB is a concern.

I like our Safeties and of course P2. I am optimistic that Bucannon and Reddick will be good to very good at OLB. I think our DT's will be solid to very good.

Very well could be a top ten D if the Offense plays complimentary football. Good TOP with minimal TO's and 3 & outs.

If you look back through history you will find a cyclical nature in the NFL regarding defenses.

In the early 90s the 3-4 was king.

Then teams started to figure out the 3-4 and around 2000 the 4-3 became king again. By 2005 there were only 5 or 6 teams running the 3-4.

Then around 2010 there was a shift back towards the 3-4 as more and more teams began to adopt it again.

I remember reading an article by Bill Walsh and he discussed the cyclical nature of NFL defenses.

Do you think it will be the lb from Georgia forgot his name....
I like Vander Esch in the second but I think he will be gone. Cards should move back into the first and get him.
Is Christian Sam from ASU for real? Not a Sun Devil fan so I have no clue. I do like Evans out of Alabama. I would rather have a taller LB then Smith but he would be nice.

We need a lb , I like van der esch and Darius Leonard
I would add a high 3 day pick De (4th round) to provide depth and rotate with Golden

Adding a free agent cb (Drc) should be a priority and then a draft pick ( 5th round pick-McFadden should slide after his poor showing at combine)
I dont trust either nkemdiche and Gunther( I d love to get Pj Hall in the third round)

My dream draft

1) Lamar Jackson
2) Billy price c ohio
3a) Darius Leonard lb south Carolina st
3b) pj Hall Dt
4)Duke Ejiofor De Wake forest
5) walter McFadden cb FSU
6) Fountaine Wr norther iowa
7)Edmonds rb Fordham

Free agents additions
Drc cb
Clive walford te
Matthews Wr

Our d-line looks much better now with Golden and Jones on the ends. Wish we could've kept Xavier Williams; he would've been a solid 3-tech.

Our linebackers, on the other hand.....let's just say that Reddick needs to prove he's a first-round draft pick.

JFC---cant remember the last time I watched a base 4-3 defense on a regularly basis. This will take some adjustment.

You watched it last year.

Like the article says the Cardinals played 4-3 on 70% of the snaps.

Defense now is all hybrid and match ups no one stays in one base all the time. Those days are gone

They played over, which is an alignment and scheme.

Actually, I have more faith in Bynes from what I saw last year than I do for Reddick or Bucannon to claim any advantage but for me it still comes down to filling the number two corner position... our annual freaking pain in the ass

Against much smaller players by in large.

It’s by and large! BIM

Please do tell the heights & weights of these much smaller SEC guys he faced while at Mizzou?

And oh BTW, Golden is the exact same size as DE Mario Addison who has ~20 sacks the last two years as a hand in the dirt DE in Carolina.

Please come with accurate facts next time instead of the constant, terminal negativity.

So we overdrafted Reddick as a MLB project, and now he'll be an OLB, and we still have a desperate need at ILBer. Cheese and rice, that's awful!

I'll be cautiously optimistic with Golden. He's supposed to be close to 100% on the knee recovery, so hopefully after camp and preseason he's back to 2016 form.

If the Cardinals really were AGGRESSIVE in FA, they would have signed Suh and ended up with:
1. A VG DL, maybe great, DL.
2. An excited fanbase.

Seems like we are clearing a load of cap space for who exactly? Bit late to be doing that once all the expensive FA's are gone.

The more it goes on like this I think we are taking LB/CB in the 1st.

Also we shouldn't have been so cheap with Gaines, he would have started opposite PP for years. He was only 26!

It might be a 4-3 base but pretty much everybody plays some type of hybrid.

That’s correct. I wrote a lengthy post about it some time ago, so I will just copy it into this thread. The point is that is doesn’t matter in any way what the system is called. Like many other things, it has become a media thing.

I actually think it might be more about media coverage, Rugby, and how it is simply more manageable to the viewers when the defensive lineup is shown in either a 4-3- or 3-4-formation. Just see how many posters on this board is talking about it.

I wrote about it a month ago, so I apologize that there will without a doubt be repetitions in this post.

Several posters in this thread is right that in reality it doesn’t matter what you call the base defensive formation. It is a much to static way to look at it, and the important parts of what defensive systems a team use is dynamic stuff like if they play 1-gap or 2-gap on the defensive line, what coverage technic do the defensive backs play, what blitz packages do they run the most, and so on. I will do my best to explain it.

Every team use some variation of a hybrid defense, and often a team line up in a different front formation on first, second and third down respectively. Sometimes it’s a 4-3 front, sometimes it’s a 3-4 front, and it can also be a 5-2-, 2-3-, 2-2-, 3-3-system and other combinations of numbers. The last couple of mentioned formations are nickel or dime defenses where there are more defensive backs in the package.

The main reason coordinators use different formations on different downs is to confuse the opponent, but it’s also because the goal is to get your nickel or dime defense on the field as fast as possible. One of the reasons for wanting to get in a sub package defense is that these contains more defensive backs and smaller, faster pass rushers, and it is sort of a defensive answer to how the NFL has become a passing league. Any defense wants to make the other team as one-dimensional as possible because then the defense can play faster without thinking about either the run or the pass. That’s also one of the reasons it is still considered very important to stop the run on early downs since that increases the chance that the offense will throw the ball, either because the running game is not working or because they are facing a long down.

A somewhat traditional nickel defense is a 4-2-5 formation while a dime defense is usually a 4-1-6 formation, but when the down and distance is very hard to the offense, for example if it’s third down and 15 yards to go, it’s common to see even more defensive backs on the defense because the focus will be to cover everyone, and should it be a run or a short pass anyway, it is expected that the defensive backs can get to the ball carrier and tackle him in time.

As a reference the Patriots spend the most time in the last regular season in defensive packages other than their base defense with 80 % of all defensive snaps, and almost all the rest of the teams were not far behind. Another example is that in one of the meetings between the Vikings and the Packers, Minnesota played the entire game using only their nickel defensive package. Or we can just trust Steve Wilks when he in the article from the original post says that the Cardinals had four down linemen in about 70-75% of the plays last season.

That that t h a t sounds like quintessential Keim pick, no?

Yes, and it is why I do not like, but yet, it is tempting.......its a conundrum.

How about we just believe Denzel Ward will slip down to #15 if there are no good QB's and they pick him . Nice, safe, and happy pick for all, including myself.

I don’t think the concern is Sunday’s as much as it is personnel moves. Planning for a 3-4 vs 4-3 is a mindset when evaluating and signing players and managing the roster.

The 4-3 better suits the size and skills of the players we currently have, anyway. Both Golden and Jones have played a lot of their football lives with their hands in the dirt. Bucannon is tailor made as a WILB if he's playing in the front 7. Bucannon came in as an OLB, not an ILB, but only was moved out of position as a rookie into the middle due to excessive injuries to the team last year. He is a textbook SILB. Bynes may surprise as starting middle man, he was good in the opportunity last year. Our defense isn't too bad at all, need a defined CB2 for sure, and as a luxury, a giant immovable meathead on the line. We're blessed to have several spots filled by guys who are among the best in the league at their positions.

It's da offense what be needing da work.

Jesus. Everything about this post is wrong.

Reddick played OLB in college and was drafted as Ann ILB. He was moved outside during the season due to injury. He had very little impact as a rookie at either position.

We don’t really know what the defense is right now because personnel and scheme are in flux. We knew it was pretty good with Badger, Branch, Dansby, etc. out there. But they’re not going to be out there next year.

Where are you getting your (mis)information? Buc was a safety in college and moved to the newly-created $LB position, where he was anything BUT a textbook SILB. He's vastly undersized to play in the middle, but they designed a system to use him. Outside of packages, he was never an OLB; it certainly has never been his primary position. That's where he'll probably be slotted now, though he is really undersized. Harry says he'll be okay there, so I'll buy that, but he's not perfect for OLB either. Nor can he possibly play in the middle in a 4-3.

Are you confusing Buc and Reddick?
