OK, if it makes you happy, since you won't dismount off that high horse, we'll assume Robby Hammock was not speaking about Gonzo and Mantei when he gave the radio interview in 2003, and discount all the other incriminating evidence like what Gonzo said in his own voice in his radio and TV interviews, and the tone of voice in which he said it -- which was heard and recognized by a great many people here and on other boards, and commented on by radio sports people, and assume his Wally Pipp statement to the press was a joke -- Oh, and his criticism at being moved out of the clean-up role last season, ignore that too. Or his statement that he knew he had another 3-4 good playing years ahead and was annoyed that the DBacks seemed to be unconvinced, but maybe he'd have to show them from some other team.

Nevertheless, Gonzo has been deteriorating seriously for the past season and a half, he is a defensive liability in LF, and every team is willing to run on him, too often successfully. I've rarely seen SS have to run so far out towards LF, or CF run so far towards LF, as this year (pre-Drew). He still draws walks, and I really appreciate that. He hits doubles, and I appreciate that. As a result, MAYBE he'll be tradeable for a fair-to-middling minor-leaguer, if he drops his demand for the option pick-up -- but he won't.

But he is not a good leader for this team, and if they were going to cut The Marine, and trade RJ (who btw, got no more insider info from the front office -- a different front office -- than Gonzo is getting, because they were working trades and didn't need his complaints), and summarily trade Damian Miller, a fading but fan-favorite, and trade Counsell -- who has frequently been voted the all-time fan favorite here even when put head to head with Gonzo and RJ -- as mere baggage thrown in to Milwaukee in that godforesaken cluster-****;

...how the hell can Gonzo be at all surprised? Studying his swing in the mirror the whole time?

Again - a player of Gonzo's stature deserves the benefit of the doubt...

But 82, he completely threw the FO under the bus and it's undeserving. This is the business side of baseball and he's completely blowing it out of proportion. Quentin is going back down to the minors when Clark gets back anyways. Gonzo goes on these rants too often and now the knowledgeable Dback fans are getting sick of it

Surely you don't believe that Gonzo is the first accomplished player to ever express his self-confidence, do you??

I called him a prick in my lone post and the thread dissappeared so it might have been me. I think we put him in his place though.... He is what he is, an arrogant prick!

Rants?? I'm not even sure that what started this whole thread can be considered anything close to a rant??

Hey - say what you guys want. Feel what you feel... But from a guy who has seen a different type of fan, who brings a different perspective, you guys are way off base...

I second that, well put. Hey Gonzo, people get old, live with it. I'm tired of jocks hanging on when it might be time to hang it up. If you decide to squeeze a few more bucks out of the mop, be ready to take the heat.

Ok, sounds good. We'll bring batteries and quarters to the next homestand and belt the crap out of opposing OF'ers. We've seen that perspective from your fans. Or maybe boo perhaps the best player in all of baseball on a regular basis...

Please, Yankees fans say and do so much worse to vastly superior players. Gotta love a fanbase that threatens to kiddnap someones children because he's on pace to break the hr record. Or you can just look at their current treatment of A-Rod if you want something more modern.

Here's yet another point of differentiation... The Yanks were in a very similar situation with a very similar player - Bernie Williams.
They kept him on this year, and while Bernie may actually be an even bigger defensive liability than Gonzo, he receives nothing but praise and honor from the fans...

Wow... you guys are slaying me...

Kidnap children? Throwing batteries and quarters?? There is a reason why the greatest rivlary in MLB is the Yankee-Red Sox rivalry, and much of has to do with the fans themselves...

As for A-Rod - how in the world can you compare A-Rod to Gonzo?? A-Rod has been with the Yankees for 2 seasons?

I'm done with you guys... Tried to offer some objective input, instead you validated the Phoenix fan stereotype... Nice job....

. Time heals nearly everything which is why he's "revered and honored in NY."

To address this first, not all Yankee fans put Jackson (the self proclaimed "straw that stirs the drink") on the same pedistal as the players who went to the series in 75 that lost to the REDs. Players like Munson,Nettles,Chambliss,Guidry and Lyle. Those players formed the foundation of the Yankees. True Jackson delivered , but those players allowed him to be showcased. Chambliss delivered the HR against George Brett's Royals to get them into the series so Jackson could become the star he became in 77.

Also in 78 lets not forget that Bucky Dent's infamous homer got them past the Red Sox @ Fenway to win a one game playoff and eventually repeat as WS champs that yr. as well.

Jackson shone because the rest of that team got him there.

Everyone on this board has respect for Gonzo and what he accomplished here. However, his time is up and the future is knocking on the door and he needs to realize that. His constant complaining doesn't help anything and he needs to tone it down, it's only making him look bad. For anyone not to realize this has no clue of the situation

Yea , I know the CLASS GUY Gonzo is. So I know he'll handle this well also. He'll help Quentin ALOT. Carlos should get plenty of time in RF as well especially if they move Green.

My hope is he can accept his new role and remain a DBack for many more yrs. as a spot starter. It would mean 300 AB's a yr instead of 500+ , but he'll do it IMO if they make him a decent offer.

Gonzo's DONE. Period. Me and 3 friends are going to the game tonight because of last night. Im pissed that Q is not starting cuz of politics. Now I get to watch Gonzo hit 3 week grounders to 2nd and pop out to the 3rd baseman while butchering a couple of balls in left.

The Bernie comparison is rediculous. If we could put Gonzo in a DH position and sign one of the top outfielders in the league to replace his defense in the field I'd be fine with it. Instead we have to deal with his horrible defense and arm in order to get his subpar offense in the lineup. Plus the Yankees don't have young prospects who deserve a shot waiting behind Bernie.

Must be why so many players live/retire here, because the fans are so horrible. Even guys like Barkley who left on bad terms says the best treatment he recieved by the fans were in Phoenix.

82cards, you have just backed up the opinion everyone has of East Coast transplants. They come to Arizona, pollute our air, buy up our properties, tie up our freeways but just can't help but stick their noses at us because our baseball team is only 10 years old..... like we wouldn't know true baseball if it hit us in the face

Smart guy, talk about revisionist history. You're jocking your fellow Yanks fans under false pretenses, as they booed Bernie as his skils eroded even as he kept his mouth shut in spite of Steinbrenner brining in accomplished guys like Damon and Matsui and rookies like Melky Cabrera to replace him. Even guys like Jeter, Rivera, and Mantle were also booed at points during their HOF careers in spite of multiple individual accomplishments and World Series victories.

DBack fans have been nothing but cordial to Gonzo for years now even as his skills went by the wayside because of what he meant to the franchise, we have only started to criticize him since he became a distraction in the middle of a pennant race.

I can't go to the game tonight, but you guys should make signs. I was watching on TV the other night and some little girl had a "Please dont trade Gonzo" sign, which about made me puke. All 4 of you need anti Gonzo/pro Carlos signs, maybe itll catch someone's attention.

Lookout Gonzo, Quentin already has as many home runs as you had in the entire first half.
