Luis Gonzalez told ESPN during Sunday's D'backs vs. Dodgers game that he will play for another two weeks, then have surgery at the beginning of August.

Good decision, Gonzo.

If he waits until August, will he on schedule for a fresh stat in ST?

Anybody notice the atrophy in Gonzo's upper body? Mainly his arms?

Joe Morgan really pointed out how Gonzo's swing and mechanics were a mess.

1 HR since May? Good decision.

I think it is a good decision, but I would have preferred he did it a month ago. He better be 100% ready for next year. If not, waiting was a bad move.

Waiting was a bad move. Somewhere i read that for a position player recovery for Tommy John surgery is 6 months, for a pitcher 12 months. This puts Gonzo at ST right at the end of 6 months. If he has no problems then great but we all know that there are always problems.

He may not be ready to go until June of next year which means that 2005 will be wasted. He should have had the surgery back in June.

FWIW, our last year's #2 first round pick, outfielder Carlos Quentin, had the same surgery the second or third week of June 2003. His ligament tear was a grade worse than Gonzo's as I recall, a total tear, although he was able to play the whole college season with it - just in extreme pain the whole time. Of course thats a couple games a week, not every day.

He was NOT ready by the beginning of this ST - in fact he finally was cleared for all activity just at the end of ST, and it took him about 4 weeks more to return to fully functional form; it's just the last 2-3 weeks he's been totally normal and hitting like a monster.

Did they say he was going to have the complete Tommy John surgery? They used to do it for only complete tears of the tendon, now it's such common place now in the majors who knows. Last I heard he had only a partial tear....

If Gonzo is unable to start next year because we waited for surgery, then there is simply no excuse for that. The D-Backs have made many poor decisions this year. In the long run, waiting may prove to be the worst of them all. Can they anything right?

I agree...after the recent series against the dodgers - I still can't believe he'd wait longer....maybe there is an attendence clause in his contract on number of games played...

The Arizona Republic is reporting that Gonzo will be deciding about the surgery after talking with team officials.

Luis probably regretted, or was reprimanded for, giving the scoop to an ESPN reporter during Sunday's game, rather than letting the team announce it to the local Press.

She did report on air to Jon Miller and Joe Morgan that he told her he decided to have the surgery in early August.

Public relations 101, Gonzo.

It fits with how this season has gone. The D-Backs have done almost nothing right this year. The easiest of tasks is difficult for them this year. When this year is over, we need to flush it down the toilet and more on. Cut our loses!

The sooner the better. Give Terrero a change to be in there everyday. If we don't resign Danny or Fins, or if we trade them he will need to be ready to start with the big club next season. He's looked great at the plate, he's had some pooer luck just missing some HR's. His swing reminds me of Vlad, and the cockiness is welcomed on a team with little emotion.
