He was gruff and never could make it work in AZ but at least he left it all on the field. He was much like BA but didn't have a Keim to help him. I remember after leaving the Cards he coached one of the teams at the TYCO college all-star game. I covered the game for Rivals & Football Digest. At the post game press conference I can't even remember what question I asked him, but he was brief and funny with every answer to any question. He only wanted to talk about the future even more so than the game. RIP Buddy! You will be missed. The game is less colorful without you.

RIP to one of the biggest horses asses in pro sports and I don't mean that in a disparaging way. Living in the Philly area and watching him butt heads with Eagles owner Norman Braman was sports classic. If Buddy were given the resources Arians has here when he was in Philly, the Eagles could have been a dynasty. As it stood, he did have a defense that rivaled his Bears defense. Speaking of which, I've never seen such a scary defense in all my life. I don't think we'll see a defense that dominant again. Buddy was an innovator and deserves to be in the hall of fame.

Not that Arizona needed more hot air when Buddy made his way to the desert but we got some! He brought a really good defense (1994) & some really mediocre defense (1995) & an offense that gave Dave Krieg a whole bunch of pages in the 1995 Cardinal Media Guide. No hard feelings Buddy and it looks like Rex & Rob turned out okay, Godspeed! Kudos TJ!

Buddy Ryan is the reason I bought season tickets. I was so excited for the defense he would bring here I went out and bought 4 seats.

I met him randomly on two occasions.... Once in the Louisville, KY Airport and once in the club section at an Eagles MNF game about 5 years ago.

Very personable and always willing to talk about the Cards. For some reason, I always got the impression that he thought that he let us down (Cards fans). I just could feel the burden on his shoulders.

It was a bad time for the Cardinals franchise, but he had a huge impact on the NFL overall. He changed defense forever.


His death, coming the same week a very sad story about William "The Refrigerator" Perry's health and financial troubles was released, has to be tough for Bears fans of that era.

That defense was so scary that I was more worried when the Cards offense took the field.

I always liked Buddy. I like coaches that will tell it like it is. That's why I'm a big Arians fan and liked Ozzie Guillen when he managed my White Sox. RIP Buddy.
