As I look back since he was given the job, overall I think the NFL has been less enjoyable, it's getting to be less of a sport and more of a business, I get wanting to make money and they have the right to pursue as much as they want we can do that here in the US, that being said I feel if it keeps going this way true fans will start to go elsewhere and be eliminated to cater to the more elite. I hate to even say it but looking back 10-15 yrs to now I used to be so excited for football and got depressed after the SB lol but now I'm at the point that I didn't even realize camp was actually starting this week! Don't get me wrong I still love the Cards and football but I'm really on a wait and see here in the next few years.
By the way making a London road trip to see the Cards play the London TeaTotallers would cost me two months wages lol

London TC's (Tea and Crumpets)

British codeword meaning Beer and Hos. Sometimes used when one wants to ditch an undesirable third member of their party by making their night sound boring. Other times used to signal its time to leave, or it is often used to fool the commoner.

Bloke, you ready to get some tea and crumpets tonight?(high fives)

Chap 1: So what are you fellows doing tonight?
Chaps 2 and 3: Oh, nothing, thought we might go and get some tea and crumpets.
Chap 1: Oh, well I better be off
Chaps 2 and 3:.....Score!

Mother: where do you think your going laddy?
Son: Oh nowhere mummy, just thought I'd go get some tea and crumpets?
Mother: Ok, well have fun deary!

They pay him to run the league.

Which he does, poorly in my opinion.

You think 32 owners all agree and have unified beliefs in the way things are run ? Come on now.

The owners have to sign off on every change the NFL makes. Whether they are Goodell's ideas or not any change that gets made has a majority approval by the owners.

Part of the game.

For now ;)

Games have been won or lost on the extra point.

I'm not a math major and didn't stay at Holiday Inn Express but the % of games decided by a missed EP is .000001 %.

IMO, if you take out the extra point, just do away with them entirely and make touchdowns seven points. Done.

I'm good with this but also like the idea of going for two and if you don't get it then 6 points gets added to your score.

If the point is that it is boring, and doesn't serve a function in the game then stop with all the bastardized ideas of points after a touchdown, and just make it seven.

I still say keep it as is.

MLB changed the height of the pitchers mound. The NBA added a 3 point line. How many years ago was that the 5 yd then hands off the WR rule was added? Seems to have helped far more than its hurt the game.

How about they talk about things that vastly effect the game like pass interference, tuck rules, or my personal favorite the Victor Cruz "I give up" so its not a fumble convenient truth rule.

The Cruz thing was just poor officiating. Tuck rule is stupid and pass interference as well as holding are called differently based on the officiating crew. Same as MLB and the strike zone. Yes I want this things fixed but let's go ahead and multi task and fix the OH MY GOD SO BORING PAT.

Agreed. Chew gum and fix multiple things at the same time.

I think overseas expansion is a bad idea just as adding games to the schedule would be. But getting rid of the silly extra point is an idea long past overdue. What about that play says football? I like the idea of just awarding the scoring team 7 points unless they want to gamble and go double or nothing on that extra point with a real football play. If you can get it in the end zone, you get 8 points, fail to score and you get penalized and have to settle for 6 points.

Steve

That part I agree with. It's way past due and dumb that one kick can cost you a game where your team just drove 90 yards down the field and manhandled the other side. I think every team should have to run a play for extra points. Pass and score 1 point, run and score two points and if you fail zero.

Maybe baseball should start awarding more runs for a HR based on how far the ball goes. Wouldn't it be more exciting if a team could actually win a game by hitting a walk off 6 run grand slam because the ball traveled 450 ft?

Change for the sake of change is not good.

The extra point is a part of the history of the game. A missed extra point for as BORING as many of you think actually changes the strategy of the game many times. A missed extra point often FORCESa team to go for 2 points later in the game. Hmm...the extra point is so boring that we want to change what is actually part of the history of the game and add a play from scrimmage for TWO points which is SO much more exciting.

Remember this. A defense has an opportunity to block an extra point. Why take that opportunity away from a defense that could conceivably win a game?

Nuf of that.

More games.
How many of you love another major sport be it hockey, basketball or baseball? How many of you LOVE another sport like you do football?

I particularly love hockey. That being said life gets in the way of watching every game during the regular season. Oh well, so I miss some games of the 82 game season. Same with basketball and even more so with baseball.

But how many of you miss any Cardinal Football games? Me? Not a one. Even when we are 3-12 I will watch the final game. Every week in the NFL is precious.

Every victory on Sunday is relished for the next 5 or 6 days. Anquish follows every loss. Adding more games would only add up to more injuries, depleted rosters, and eliminate more teams by week 12. Many have said "eliminate 2 exhibiton games and add them to the regular season".

Want a great idea Mr Goodell? Make the first exhibiton game FREE. No tickets needed. First come first serve. Sit anywhere you want. You know what that would do? It would give a lot of people who will NEVER be able to afford a ticket to go see a professional NFL game. It would allow a guy to take his family to a game. It would allow an aspiring highschool athlete an opportunity to see his heroes on the field. And I'll just bet THEY won't care it's an exhibiton game.

How's that for an innovative idea? Then again maybe the poor NFL owners simply can't afford to do anything like that. I mean they couldn't possibly survive the loss of revenue even though they would still be getting advertising and concessions.

The owners and the NFL have been STEALING money by forcing season ticket holders to purchase tickets for exhibition games over the years which MANY don't even attend the "useless and unneccessary" games.

C'mon Mr. Goodell. You're always " thinking" of us, the fans. Every decision you make is to make the NFL experience better for us.....of course only if it increases revenues.

Mr. Goodell, shut the hell up just a little while. Stop trying to bigger than the game. Sit back and enjoy the GREATEST sport in the world.

I personally miss the old days of running football and good defense. But this isn't my NFL. Yet it's flourishing. And I still watch every Cardinal game and every other game I can catch. My viewership hasn't declined since my youth, when all those things I loved were exemplified, it's actually increased since then.

I do think the NFL is becoming sissified, but expanding into other markets, primarily overseas, doesn't concern me at all. Honestly, some of the other sports overseas like Rugby and Soccer may actually influence the NFL in positive ways. Let's be honest, whenever old people want things the way they were, you have to recognize that they got like 1 game on TV, if that, and so it seemed a lot more special than it was. Some of the supposed great football games we saw in our youth was the only game on, and today wouldn't even be good enough to make TV in a crowded market.

That being said, I'm very cognizant of the fact that whenever I complain about something not being the way it was, it primarily means I'm old and craggy and a Dino compared to modern life.

Times change.

Move on.

Adapt.

You're right, about all of this. In my younger days, it was much more of a spectacle and I loved looking forward to that next broadcast and it didn't matter all that much who was playing. Monday Night Football started up and it was like having an extra Christmas each week. Even with all the rules changes that have people in an uproar, I prefer today's football universe. I love being able to watch my team every single week and I typically watch at least a dozen more games in addition to the Cards.

But I really haven't liked the fact that I'm cheering for a sport that shortens lives and takes the quality out of their very existence. Like just about everyone, I love to see a guy get flattened. But if I have to lose "the big hit" so these guys can still spell their name 10 years after they retire, it's not exactly a sacrifice.

And I'm fine with overseas expansion, I just think it's stupid to put one team overseas. Maybe if they could put in a whole division at once but the way it's apparently planned seems doomed to me. Regardless, I'm one of the few, I guess, that actually likes what Goodell has done. Besides inheriting a huge image problem of off the field issues, the writing was already on the wall about the long term health risks of the game (at every level).

If Goodell can keep this game alive and thriving through this "concussion lawsuit" era, he'll be right there with Pete Rozelle. Pete's challenge was saving the smaller franchises. He did that by forcing the owners to accept shared TV revenues. The idea of revenue sharing did not sit well in this country at the height of the Cold War. The sound byte of the day could have come directly from Sheriff Buford T Jusitce "that's nothin' but plain and simple old-fashioned communism".

It seems like the current business model of the NFL is to find the saturation point of the game with fans to squeeze as much revenue out of them. I don't recall ever hearing "there is no offseason" in the NFL before Goodell. Everything is now made to ensure that there is at least one major thing each month in the NFL to extract as much coin from TV networks and fans as possible. It's brilliant really because between all the offseason stuff and the season the NFL is getting revenue 12 months out of the year, something none of the other big three professional leagues can really claim. It's going to reach a point though before fans say enough is enough and start to turn their attention elsewhere. The NFL is really starting to walk a fine line here between finding that right saturation point because college football is becoming huge. Games are cheaper, it's more of an enjoyable experience, the game is "purer" in terms of the rules and people are really starting to find this as a much more enjoyable, cheaper alternative to the NFL.

It's quite the opposite for me. I'm not sure there is anything less "pure" than big time college sports, especially college football. There was a time when it was by far my favorite but it's almost an afterthought for me these days. The NFL may be everywhere and they may well reach a point of over saturation but I don't think it's all that close just yet. I find myself anxiously awaiting the next step in the NFL year.

I am anxious as well for every season, but my anxiousness has waned over the years. For instance I used to anxiously await the schedule every year before they started doing all these schedule release shows with the NFL making a big production out of it. Now that has become an afterthought to me. I have talked to other who feel the same way. The NFL has come to overhype everything it does and it is becoming obnoxious. From my own experience and people I have talked to, we are turning to college more and more for a more personal, less in your face attitude than the NFL has become. It really is too bad too because the NFL didn't need any tweaking. It was already king. Don't get me wrong I am still an NFL fan and it is my favorite sport, it's just that college is starting to catch up to that level for me.

I don't support the idea to get rid of the extra point, but people who think this is all just change for the sake of change don't know what they are talking about. The fact is that things like adding replay (a good change btw) have extended games. There is such a thing as games running too long. The NFL is trying to find ways too keep the good changes they've made while making the game run more efficiently. Taking out extra points is an idea. That's all it is at this point. And pretending like the 1 missed/blocked extra point each season is reason enough to say it needs to stay is disingenuous. You want it to stay for the sake of tradition. There's nothing wrong with that.

As for the more games rant...How do we decide what exactly is the right number of games? Was the NFL better when it was 12 games? 14? Was there the same outcry that there shouldn't be more then? Were those people right? Objectively, I'd say the game is the best and most popular it's ever been. In those cases the changes were right.

All I'm trying to say is that even though the Goodell and the NFL seem to be trying to change the game too much and too fast, there's also such a thing as being too afraid of change. Change can be for the better. I'd argue that many of the changes the NFL has made over the past 10-20 years were for the better. Replay. 2 pt conversion. The new overtime rule that doesn't give coin flip winners an unfair advantage. Let's not be so resistant to change that we can't see the positive and the negative side of the ideas that they try to implement.

They tried football in Europe. They couldn't draw flies if they painted the seats with manure.

They tried second rate minor league football and it actually helped create interest and understanding of the game.

London, as Europe's team, will be a gold mine for the NFL.

The World Cup in soccer made me realize the NFL needs to take roots in Europe. When one stops trying to expand, one tends to stand still or go backwards. I think sometime down the road there will be some type of European conference in basketball which will produce a champion which will compete in some fashion with the NBA.

Agree on the NBA.

Basketball is well anchored as a sport throughout continental Europe, particularly in Spain, Italy, Balkans and Greece.

Is everything
I think every team should have to run a play for extra points. Pass and score 1 point, run and score two points and if you fail zero.

There would be unintended consequences of course. It would elevate the worth of a field goal. Let's say 50% of the runs and passes fail, now half of a game's touchdowns are worth only 6 points instead of 7. So basically you are watering down the worth of a TD and making field goals more important in the long run. I like that it usually takes more than 2 field goals to = a TD.

They need mathematicians and metrics people on this, in all seriousness. I can't even count the # of games I've seen decided by 1 or 2 points. Eliminating the extra point impacts all of that. I think it's ridiculous that fans, some casual, some not, would decide such a thing. Most of them don't know what they're talking about. And frankly, there's a reason the extra point was added in the first place. I certainly don't think any of you are credible enough or qualified enough to hang my hat on regarding the state of the game or the history of the game.

Very good post and solid argument. I have to agree with the bolded part. Still say the XP is the second most boring play in FB (false starts are worse) so I'm going with the you get 7 points for a TD but if you want you can go for two but if you fail the TD is only worth 6 points.

I don't even mind if they move the extra point back but to eliminate it is eliminating a part of the history of the game.

How about making the blocked extra point a live ball?
