Enjoy, another exclusive Marcin Gortat post-game interview to his best media friend

Przegląd Sportowy: The Suns are in a tough spot, something that coach Alvin Gentry also talked about. You lost six games in a row.

Marcin Gortat: That's true. 6 losses and it doesn't seem like we're going to break this streak in the next game. This is a tough moment, not only for the team, but also for myself, for my career. I'm going through tough moments. It's situations like these where you have to show mental strength and think about what we can change. I need to train hard every day and hope for the best.

How would you explain the teams streaky play this season? For three quarters you were neck in neck with a top-notch team in the NBA, the Clippers, only to waste it in three or four minutes.

MG: Unfortunately, there are some "black holes" in our games that are hard to logically explain. There are moments in which it feels like somebody turned off the power. As if someone pulled the plug. We compete, we fight, we try, and then suddenly they go up a dozen points and we either mount a comeback, or it's too late.

Coach Gentry admitted that he's still looking for an optimal lineup, and he himself doesn't quite know how to use certain players. Your team is really going through a lot of changes all the time. Is Gentry looking for a perfect balance?*

MG: Maybe, I can't really say anything about that.

In some games you score a lot of points, for example 22 against the Trail Blazers and 18 against the Knicks, but you also have games like the one in Staples Center against the Clippers. Why?

MG: It's mostly because various players play different roles and have different playing time in every game. The team isn't crystallized. It doesn't have everyone knowing his role. Nobody's really sure how many minutes he'll spend on the court, whether he even gets a shot. We're still at the point of finding our strong suits.

How can you correct this?

MG: First and foremost - by practice. We can talk about how much (shots? playing time? t/n), and what we want in the locker room before and after games, but it isn't working so far. Only hard work in practice will let us eliminate our mistakes and fix our play.

You mentioned that you are going through some hard times? How do you plan on breaking through this crisis?

MG: Talking to the people that are close to me, that helped me built my career, or were close to me when I was growing as a basketball player. I'm capable of showing a high level. I have no other choice, but to look for a place to me in the team and fight for what's mine. It's really hard this season, though. This is an important mental test for me. I need to stay strong and focus on basketball. I can't be discouraged by things that happen in my team. It's not easy. This is the first time I'm in a situation like this in my career. Physically, I feel well. Maybe my aggressiveness has faded, but you know why? Because in one game, I play well, and in the next, I don't, while in the third one, I don't play at all, and in the fourth, I'm suddenly getting a bunch of passes. There's no consistency. I think that might be affecting me.

In the game against the Trail Blazers, you've shown that you can play a big role in the Suns offence.

MG: First of all, I believe I'm a good basketball player. I showed and confirmed that many times already. I don't need to argue with anyone about it, or repeat it ad nauseam. I know my worth. I believe in myself, but at the same time, I'm waiting for a chance. I don't give up, if I did, I wouldn't be myself.

*Please note that the first part of this question is formatted into Gortat's answer

He needs to learn to shut up and play harder because his mouth is bigger than his talent. All I hear is excuses, excuses, excuses, me, me, me..

I don't find much wrong in anything he has said. You are making this out to be worse versus what it really is. I shouldn't be surprised because of your Gortat hate. However, he says many things right.

He talked about practicing harder. He talked about what "we can change". He talks about the team lineups and people not knowing their role. He states "Only hard work in practice will let us eliminate our mistakes and fix our play."

This simply didn't play to me as the equivalent of when Barkley blasted the organization or other past Suns players. Much of what he says is spot on. The lineup keeps changing, guys don't know their roles and the team seems to have no direction. I would have said the same thing regardless of who said it.

This is just you trying to take more shots at Gortat.

Yeah, this is a real reach on your part. He really doesn't have the option of keeping his mouth shut, giving interviews is a part of his responsibility especially to someone that is so revered in his homeland. It looked to me like Gortat worked really hard in that interview to be a good teammate and supportive of the franchise in general. You have to really want to rip a guy to make an issue out of this interview.

There isnt much there to argue. His previous interview he said some things I thought were out of line but in this one has nothing to disagree with.

Its not as bad as the last time but he's still failing to relate his not being a primary focus of the offense to the fact that he hasn't shown a great deal of commitment to the Suns. Even though they are doing a lousy job of it, they are building for the future and if they don't believe Gortat will be here, there's little point in molding the offense to his strengths and weaknesses.
Personally, I think they should have done that anyway to build up his trade value but then again, any course of action other than signing Beasley and touting him as our future star would have been smart - well, smarter, anyway. Having a lame duck coach in charge of building for the future is only slightly less stupid. (My guess the only reason he was kept on was to avoid eating his salary.)

Since our FO is not likely to fire themselves the only hope for the team is for Sarver to sell it. From the look of the crowd at the last game, that may come sooner than we dared hope.

I have always been a critic of Gortat's "big mouth", but i see nothing wrong in what he said in this interview. i give him credit for showing maturity by not throwing any of his teammates or coach under the bus, considering the team is going through their hardest stretch this season.

i kind of took the "black holes" thing a little racist. haha jk!

seriously i think he still complaining about his number of attempts and shots. which is why he threw that black holes comment in their. and mentioning the whole consistency thing. and it came off a little defensive with him using consistency as his excuse for being so up and down.

This is so Sarver like it rings true. :)

However, the Suns could make Majerle the interim HC and not lose much money. It would also hopefully prevent Majerle being hired as the next HC if he fails miserably. IMO, the Suns terrible play is most likely connected to Blanks inability to properly evaluate talent. One only has to look at the drafting of Marshall and the signing of Beasley for confirmation. There is also the failure to identify SG as one of the Suns primary weaknesses. Relying on Dudley or Brown to start at SG is a failing grade. I won't even get into the Gordon offer sheet. I still think Gentry is a good coach who was given some poor tools to do the work but he will likely be the fall guy.

When Dragic hit the game winner against Memphis, everyone was happy except Gortat who looked ticked off because he was open and Dragic took the shot himself.

Clearly... as exemplified by the way Gortat walked over to Dragic and was the first on the team to high five and hug him... what a jerk.

I saw that, too. Marcin is a team player. Also a perfectionist who says what he thinks when he experiences something that's not right.

I know the feeling.

Dude you are on another planet. Either that or there is actually something in his interview above and giving a high five/hug to said player is some devious plot by Gortat to fracture Dragic's shooting hand and crush his spine with that hug.

What a selfish bastard!

Gortat loves to throw his teammates under the bus. In an interview after the game tonight he complained that the guys are shooting too many shots from the outside that they can't make and that they need to get the ball inside more. In isolation this isn't a big deal, but as a whole Gortat's attitude gets old.

Well, I happen to agree with him on that one, especially back when he gave that quote. We had Brown and Beasley running ISO plays from 22 feet out for an absurd number of our possessions.

The quote is from tonight and it is absolutely ridiculous considering Gortat is extremely soft in the post and has no real post moves to speak of.

Gortat is right but at the same time he can't produce consistently enough for us to work the offesnse through him

This. Ever since he tried to learn those Hakeem moves, he's started thinking he's Twinkletoes out there. Those wimpy fall-aways and hook shots have turned him into a ballerina instead of an NBA center. I want our center back.
