Moving Edge to save 5 mil against the cap...I'm not against it. If we go after J.Stewart in rd1 we'd save a few mil at the RB spot and a mil or 2 more by moving Wells. That should be enough to get Faneca in here. I'd rather have a combo of Stewart and Faneca than Edge and Wells and day.

I'm not comfortable giving up our best back in years for an unproven player. Find a way to have both so you can see what you have. Free up space by letting Shipp sail before you get rid of Edge. Bryant Johnson may be freeing up cap space as well. Find a way.

No need to find a way. We will restructure Fitz and still have plenty of caproom for a few really good FA's if we want and extending both Dansby and Pace all with keeping Edge and drafting Mcfadden at #16 :)

Do you really think Mcfadden will last that long? Everyone is going to be looking at him as if he's their second shot at getting AP.

Shipp only frees up about 600k and even if we dont re-sign BJ we need to spend money on a replacement, so no savings there. Cutting Berry would free up almost 4 mil Holt should free up over 2 mil and I believe Wells frees up a mil or 2. Those cuts along with extending FItz should give us wiggle room.

Where are you guys getting that we even need wiggle room? We will have like 25 million in cap space after Fitz is restructured. We could extend Dansby, Pace, pay the incoming rooks and pay a few FA's No problem. We can cut those guys if they just need to be cut. But we dont NEED to do it for the money.

I'm more about getting guys that can help and cutting the ones that don't if that's what it takes. I used to pull for Shipp but he's had his shot to prove himself and he's failed. I'd rather use his money on someone else now.

I agree with that philosophy. but the tone here makes it sound as though we need to cut these guys for the money.

We'll have just over 20 mil after Fitz is restructured and before Dansby and Pace who will eat up almost 10 mil in cap space which puts us at 10 mil in cap space and 34 players under contract

Actually we'd have 36 players under contract after re-signing Pace and Dansby. We still have a lot of RFAs and EFAs that will be tendered and take up very little of the cap as well as our rookies that won't take up much space (for once).

You greatly over-emphasize the players under contract thing. Its not really a big deal.

We can still make up cap space without the need to get rid of guys like Edge (such as paycuts/restructuring for Ross, Berry, etc). Getting rid of talent just for the hell of it is just a really, really bad idea. Let's add more talent and depth to this team to build off of so we don't have to relive the 99 season all over again.

A good Gm could easily get all this done and have plenty of money for free agency. We'll see if Graves can start earning keep this off season. Another thing to consider is taht the Cards don't have to be big players in FA this year. Maybe one top FA, Faneca?, and a couple of role players to fill out depth,Drew Carter and Drayton Florence. I would consider that an excellent off season.

As for Edge, i'm not for letting him go. Who are we going to play at RB unless we paint oursleves into a corner, again, and have to draft a RB in round 1. Shipp and Arrington have shown nothing and are not even remotely capable as starters. The Addai scenario doesn't exist with the Cards and i think that's a bad comaprison. The Colts had a veteran in Dominic Rhodes who showed he was capable when he filled in for Edge and Addai was eased into the starting role as the season progressed. The Cards don't have anyone like that on their team. You can't just draft a Stewart, Mendenhall,or even McFadden and give them the job if you want to have any kind of succcess. Even AP had a veteran RB to ease the load with Chester Taylor.

Funny that Bryant Johnson isn't mentioned anywhere in the article. I am still convinced he finds his way to Baltimore.

I have never been a fan of Edge's running style in this system, and after a full year, I am still not sold. I really like the idea of keeping the core together, it is how you win these days. FA's are just too damned expensive. The only two people that need to go RIGHT NOW are Holt & Rackers.

Faneca, and alot of re-signing's would be just the ticket IMO.

Remember, we were two FG's (Washington & SF) from going 10-6 and being in the playoffs. That almost sucks worse than 5-11.

I just want to say thanks to Graves for finally putting this out there.

But the salary cap isn’t a rubber band. It can’t be stretched beyond its limit.

“We recognize them as our leaders, but part of leadership is understanding that if everybody wants theirs at the expense of the entire team, then we may not make the progress as a team that we want to,” Graves said. “I think some of that is going to have to be accepted. …

“We may not be able to do everybody two to three years ahead of time. We’ve got some other young players looking at their first bite of the apple.”

Very smart thing to say in so many ways.

Does anyone know what Rackers' cap hit is for next season?

And no, I'm not trying to turn this into an anti-Rackers thread.

I like in this article that Graves, though ready to go out and get some deals done with our guys, is not ready to re-do deals with 2 or more years left.

Edge, behind this line, got 1200+ yards this year. Add Faneca, and the rest of the line in their second year together, and Edge gets maybe 1400+ yards next year. I say keep Edge for at least one more season and draft his FUTURE replacement.....a la Colts/Addai......

I think he is saying he's not ready to re-do those deals because we have guys with one year left or are a FA that needs done first........then those other guys will get a bigger bite of the apple........(glad we moved away from the pie thing)
