INDIANAPOLIS - At least two Cardinals offensive players will change positions, and another could lose his starting job if he doesn't perform at a Pro Bowl level, coach Dennis Green said Saturday at the NFL Scouting Combine.
Guard Leonard Davis will move from the right side to the left, and receiver Anquan Boldin will move from flanker to split end.
And if Freddie Jones doesn't play like one of the best tight ends in the league, he won't be starting, Green said.
Davis is being moved for two reasons: He played left tackle in college at Texas and feels more comfortable on the left side. Also, Green's offense is designed to run the ball to the weak side, which is often to the left.
"The system is designed to flood the right side," Green said, "(with) a lot of three receivers and (to) get a favorable number count on the weak side."
Davis will replace left guard Cameron Spikes. The right guard spot is up for grabs, Green said.
Green admitted moving Boldin to the "X" receiver spot was a gamble, since Boldin caught 101 passes at flanker last year, an NFL rookie record.
"Anybody would be a little nervous about that," Green said. "But I think the split end is ideally suited for him. This makes it easier for him, in my opinion, because he'll get less double coverage."
Bryant Johnson, who played split last year as a rookie, will move to flanker. But he'll compete for the job there, Green said. It's possible the Cardinals could draft a receiver.
"It's a good year to like receivers because there are so many to like," he said.
Green also put Jones on the spot, saying he had the ability to make the Pro Bowl. "If Freddie can't go to the Pro Bowl, he's probably not going to start for us," Green said. "If he's not doing that, I'm not sure why he should be playing for us. I can't think of another tight end in the NFC that should be going to the Pro Bowl in place of Freddie Jones."
Extra point
The Cardinals are no longer interested in trading for Washington cornerback Champ Bailey.
The price was too high. The Redskins are believed to be asking for multiple draft picks, including a first-rounder.
