Green working on Cards' offensive line

By Darren Urban, Tribune

Arizona Cardinals coach Dennis Green praised Leonard Davis, saying he “looks the best” of the offensive linemen right now, despite Davis’ recent move from left guard to left tackle. Green also said center Pete Kendall looks good.

But the rest of the line — left guard Reggie Wells, right guard Cameron Spikes and right tackle Anthony Clement — needs work, Green said.

Davis said he is still getting used to left tackle, although he feels much more comfortable than he did just last week when the change first happened. While L.J. Shelton was demoted from left tackle to backup, the prevailing feeling is that Shelton will eventually be one of the Cards’ starting linemen.

It is the line and quarterback Josh McCown, Green admitted, who probably have the most to prove on offense.

“I’ve looked at the last four years, looked at the stats on offense, and they aren't very good at all,” Green said. “When I say we want to be top five in offense, I clearly have understood how far we have to go.”

NEW QB

On Tuesday, the Cardinals signed former Stanford quarterback Chris Lewis. Lewis, who was undrafted, started seven games and played in nine for the Cardinal in 2003. He threw for 33 touchdowns in his career and had a low completion percentage of 49 percent.

“If we are going to have a fourth guy he should be a young guy, maybe make the practice squad . . . but he knows going in he’ll be the fourth,” Green said.

McCown is the starting quarterback, followed by Shaun King and rookie John Navarre on the depth chart.

THAT TIME OF YEAR

It’s rare when an offseason practice generates a memorable play, but it happened Tuesday when, during a no-huddle, end-of-the-game drill, a Hail Mary pass from McCown traveled some 50 yards into the end zone before safety Adrian Wilson attempted to bat it down.

But before the ball hit the turf, receiver Anquan Boldin dove and caught it for a touchdown.

It may be only June, Boldin said, but “I am going to play hard every play.”

“It’s like (against) Minnesota last year,” Boldin added, recalling Nathan Poole’s miracle TD catch to beat the Vikings. “You (as a defense) get your heart broken.”

Better to have it happen in June, Wilson was told, than in September when the real games start.

“Not September,” Wilson corrected. “February, when we are in the Super Bowl.”

EXTRA POINTS

Linebacker Raynoch Thompson and receiver Karl Williams were not at practice but were excused. . . . Green has changed up practice this week, bringing in the players at 6 a.m. to start the day, in order to begin the transition of how the days will run during the regular season. Practices are expected to be held around the same time as the current workouts, approximately 10 a.m. to noon. . . .

Tight end Steve Bush, recently cut by the Cards, is scheduled to visit the 49ers. Safety Justin Lucas recently signed with the Rams.

It's fun watching someone who knows what is going on work isn't it. It's so refreshing I almost don't know how to feel.

A coach who is willing to point out differences between players, I kinda like that. Remember the old days when we had a coach who told the media every player was doing great every day. It seems like it was just last year.

You'd have to assume DG is being just as up front with his players during practice. Let them know where they stand and make sure the guys know who needs to work a little harder.

Who is O line coach? O-line is area of the team I am most disappointed in. Bidwill has spent a lot of money on this area and has not gotten results. I would have loved to here that the Cards had coaxed Hanifan away from the Rams. He coached two best lines in history; Cards in 70s and Redskins in 80s.

Sorry, but I don't buy this hypocrisy.

It seems Green has laid down the law about everyone else talking to the media, so that internal workings of the team don't get aired in public, yet he turns right around and does it himself.

To me that is the epitome of hypocrisy. Some of you; can rant on about how great that is all you want. I don't buy it. If Mr. Green continues like this, I predict his honeymoon period here will shorten condsiderably.

Better than last years coaching staff. You know, one that produced 4 wins! Let me guess, you want that idiot Coach Mac back. Green is allowed to talk however he wants to the media...He's head coach, you know, the one in charge.

Huh. I just dont get what you are saying

All he has said is 3 guys on the oline needs work. He has never said anyone sucks or anything. How is that telling the media the internal workings of the team?

There is a ton he hasnt said to the media, we had no clue that the 5 guys were going to be cut and I am pretty sure it was a long time coming and not a decision made that day. Heck all he said about the cuts was that the team needed to get faster and I am pretty sure there was more to it then that. Plus he hasnt said much about his meeting with Thompson.

Has he revealed anything earth shattering that the media or the fans dont already know?

Again I have no clue what you are saying.

Tango, I'd say you are overreacting a little.

I have doubts about Davis at LT. But, he did play it well in college. I do agree with the quotes from Wylie out of the Republic article today that this line needs a nasty streak more than anything. If they get that, these position changes will work out just fine.

I can agree that the focus of the "blame" for last year's record should fall on the coaching staff.
I would disagree with your insinuations and innuendos, however, in a number of ways.
Yes, the offense was truely inept last year, and the O-Line play was a big part of that....but not all. From my observations, the biggest problem last year, in regard to not only the O-Line but the entire offense, can be summed up in 4 words: Offensive Coordinator, Jerry Sullivan ! Well, actually I think you need to include O-line coach Pete Hoener in there too. To me, essentially there was no Offensive "plan" last year. Sullivan seemed to be flying by the seat of his pants. He was a duck out of water. So there, I would now include Mac. Sully should have never been put in that position. You can over-simplify and over-generalize, over-exaggerate like a college sophomore all you want, but there was no 1 single, simple reason for last year's performance (or lack of it).

Let me guess, you want that idiot Coach Mac back.
Perfect example here....to begin with, if you want to exaggerate and fabricate what "I" may be thinking....the I'll go ahead and accomodate you, play your game with you, and begin by telling you, grammatically you should have ended you question with a question mark. :nono:
...as to content...just to save you some "speculation"...NO, I don't want Mac back. You certainly may call him an idiot, and consider him that. I don't ! Once again, reason for me saying sophomoric oversimplification! Mac, like anyone else, had his strengths and weaknesses. He was not all "bad" just as he was not all "good". Green, in that respect, is no different. He doesn't walk on water. He has individual strengths and weaknesses too. Time will reveal to those who care to observe...what those are now. He does bring a "different" array of those talents and skills to this "game", Hopefully some that are able to improve the situation.

Now....back to the previous paragraph.

again, IMO, the lack of organization, stemming from Sully's ineptness of proper planning resulted in talents being wasted and mis-used. The players can only do what they are "supposed" to do, in that regard. I said back then, as I do now, that most good OC's learn THEIR job coming up through the QB or maybe even sometimes RB coach avenue. Mainly the QB, where they have to know what "everyone" on the field is doing and how their actions intertwine. That is what was painfully lacking in Sully's case. Offensive Lineman going into pass blocking technique on a short and goal line run....players out of position, not due to a mental error on their part, but because of inept play design.....etc, etc, etc.
couple that with Hoener being new at his job too, after the departure of George Warhop (for better or worse) to Dallas....and I think you really have to look no further to point a finger for most of the "blame" for the O-Line's problems last year.

But even that, alone, was not totally responsible for the 4-12 record. There were many others too.

Green is allowed to talk however he wants to the media...He's head coach, you know, the one in charge

So say you. Just because you have the power or right to do something doesn't always make you right in doing it !!!!!

Once again..."sophmoric" over simplification.

....if you want to poke out little jabs.....you should not be surprised if you elicit some counter punches.
....but one word of caution.....
don't bring a knife to a gun fight. :D

Yes, maybe I am.

I certainly hope so.

I totally agree in regard to the "nasty streak" reference....and maybe this IS just a way that will effectively help improve that area. Again....I hope so.

I am, however, still a little leery of Dennis Green's ego and history in that regard. So pardon me, if I remain still a little skeptical at times. I'm still repleating my daily mantra here...."We'll See, We'll See"...and as usual...hope for the best.

Nasty streak is exactly why Step and Leckey were drafted. Both are known to have big nasty streaks and are ankle bitters in the interior of the oline.

If Green is asked a question he has answered them as far as I know. He has said very lttle and hinted at a lot. It's no secret that Shelton has been hurt and is not in shape at this time. When asked about the waived five he simply said they were good players and should find a team to play for in the NFL.They just didn't fit in our system.

He talked to Thompson and nobody except the two parties to the talk have said a thing. Green is going to be rough on this team this first year. He is not used to losing as we are. If you want to see happiness watch as I have the game tape of the 1998 playoff game in Dallas. That's what we want. I think Green has a chance they way he is going about molding this team we stand a chance to be in the mix every year. Maybe (I say this quietly) go to a super bowl?

Saw the clip on TV news last night... actually Wilson and other DB's were all over that pass and knocked it down; but Q was doin' his thing, never quit on the play, dove for and was able to snag the ball as it fell to the ground!

Fairly simple Tango,
Green speaks for the team, and only him...

The key, the team functions and speaks as one. Doesn't really matter what is said.

Who is O line coach?
Bob Wylie - formerly of the Bears. Very vocal. Wants to see his players play "nastier", hit "through" (rather than "at") people and finish their blocks.

Note - Nice to see some of you newbies. (Fan base is expanding!) But have to admit to some frustration because some of you are showing up with your guns blazing in every direction without knowing much about where we are, how we got here and where we're trying to go.

I also think it's unfair to call the previous HC an "idiot." (You don't get very many opportunities to coach in the NFL by being an idiot). Sometimes the effectiveness of a coach depends on being at the right place at the right time - and vice versa. And one trend I've become increasingly aware of is the growing percentage of NFL teams with really good head coaches.

This is a competitive business and sometimes a pretty good coach will be buried by the brilliant ones he must face each week. But that doesn't make him an "idiot." (It just means we'd better be sure we have one of the brilliant ones).

I would rather they aim for the Super Bowl and fall short no matter how unrealistic it may seem to us fans than to aim for 7-9. Every team, every year should be talking Super Bowl IMO.

As for the OL, I have been singing praises about Wylie since he was hired. He performed miracles with a decimated Bears OL for 2 years and the year the OL was healthy, they gave up 9 sacks all year as a unit according to the tapes (I think the total given up that year was 17 but Wylie attributed only 9 to his OL).

Those are good stats for the whole Oline. Hopefully Wylie can duplicate that success here with our Oline.

Ah - but you make the mistake of alluding to the Cardinals as being part of the NFL up above - when clearly no one knew what they were doing before Green was hired . . . BUT calling someone an idiot isn't very nice - but to say that mac wasn't a HORRIBLE head Coach is just a flat out lie and I don't care what the circumstances were - game management, inability to make adjustments and talent evaluation were all nil during his time here and Buddy may have killed this team salary cap wise - but at least he left and drafted some talent on it for Tobin to work with - Mac pretty much left the cupboard bare which could delay our future successive trips to the playoffs for a couple years - but I'm patient - I can wait because I have faith now with DG and somehwat with Graves - let's hope he can get our guys signed on time again this year - that will be just one more positive step in the right direction..
