Green working on Cards' offensive line
By Darren Urban, Tribune
Arizona Cardinals coach Dennis Green praised Leonard Davis, saying he “looks the best” of the offensive linemen right now, despite Davis’ recent move from left guard to left tackle. Green also said center Pete Kendall looks good.
But the rest of the line — left guard Reggie Wells, right guard Cameron Spikes and right tackle Anthony Clement — needs work, Green said.
Davis said he is still getting used to left tackle, although he feels much more comfortable than he did just last week when the change first happened. While L.J. Shelton was demoted from left tackle to backup, the prevailing feeling is that Shelton will eventually be one of the Cards’ starting linemen.
It is the line and quarterback Josh McCown, Green admitted, who probably have the most to prove on offense.
“I’ve looked at the last four years, looked at the stats on offense, and they aren't very good at all,” Green said. “When I say we want to be top five in offense, I clearly have understood how far we have to go.”
NEW QB
On Tuesday, the Cardinals signed former Stanford quarterback Chris Lewis. Lewis, who was undrafted, started seven games and played in nine for the Cardinal in 2003. He threw for 33 touchdowns in his career and had a low completion percentage of 49 percent.
“If we are going to have a fourth guy he should be a young guy, maybe make the practice squad . . . but he knows going in he’ll be the fourth,” Green said.
McCown is the starting quarterback, followed by Shaun King and rookie John Navarre on the depth chart.
THAT TIME OF YEAR
It’s rare when an offseason practice generates a memorable play, but it happened Tuesday when, during a no-huddle, end-of-the-game drill, a Hail Mary pass from McCown traveled some 50 yards into the end zone before safety Adrian Wilson attempted to bat it down.
But before the ball hit the turf, receiver Anquan Boldin dove and caught it for a touchdown.
It may be only June, Boldin said, but “I am going to play hard every play.”
“It’s like (against) Minnesota last year,” Boldin added, recalling Nathan Poole’s miracle TD catch to beat the Vikings. “You (as a defense) get your heart broken.”
Better to have it happen in June, Wilson was told, than in September when the real games start.
“Not September,” Wilson corrected. “February, when we are in the Super Bowl.”
EXTRA POINTS
Linebacker Raynoch Thompson and receiver Karl Williams were not at practice but were excused. . . . Green has changed up practice this week, bringing in the players at 6 a.m. to start the day, in order to begin the transition of how the days will run during the regular season. Practices are expected to be held around the same time as the current workouts, approximately 10 a.m. to noon. . . .
Tight end Steve Bush, recently cut by the Cards, is scheduled to visit the 49ers. Safety Justin Lucas recently signed with the Rams.
