What?
Seems to be a huge area of contention for many posters. I would like to know why some feel that an ego is a bad quality in anyone who strives for success.

I think the only thing that will cause change in this organization is someone who's inflated ego is the driving force for no longer accepting mediocrity or worse.

We have had nice guys and we have had media favorites, but never a winner. Let's see just what an ego that refuses to allow a team to fail him can do. I like the idea Green will not accept a loss going on his personal record without some heads rolling. It's like he is entrusting these players with his greatest possesion, that one thing that seperates him from the rest of humanity, the pinacle of every coaches drive and desire ..... a winning record.

Green lays his .675 winning percentage on the line every weekend. I say let him put it out there with the players he feels will improve that percentage. And if they fail him eliminate them as fast as possible.

I think ego is just what this team needs. Utter refusal to fail. Can you imagine the ego and swagger that would permeate this organization if a playoff appearance were to happen this season?

God forbid we may actually be walking and talking like the Packers, Buccanners and now the Seahawks seem to have caught some of this disease. I hope Green can get this team infected soon. And his ego blows up so big his head won't fit in his car.

Cause if he leaves here with a deflated ego, that means this team is still a pathetic loser.

Long live Greens ego.

My thoughts from another thread;

Green is trying to make this HIS team with HIS guys. Why are we so suprised?!? It isnt like the 2003 Cardinals were the 1927 Yankees and Green has just traded Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig for draft picks and named 1928 draftee Stan "Sparkplug" McGee or Daniel "The Human Movin'-Picture Reel" Jablowski as the starters. This team was crap last year and crap all but one year since their move here. Crap, crap, crap, crappitty crap. Crap. Green was hired to turn this ship around and it will take time...maybe even more than we or Green had anticipated.

NFL Coaches are paid millions of dollars a year to inspire and lead testosterone-filled men in a physical collision sport. Every single one of them is an egomaniac.

Yes, humble head coaches are rare and usually not very good. Even Tobin had a little streak of pride. Like I said when he was hired, I think Green took this job because of his ego. And, only a coach with supreme selfconfidence can build a true winner here.

Besides, have we forgotten the Bidwill will pay Green an extra million for just making the playoffs? I'm going to speculate, like Walter, and guess that Green would really like to bank that money.

To me there's a difference between having what I call a strong ego, and a big one.

I also think maybe some people are confusing ego with self image.

A winner has a strong self image. Usually when most people talk about someone having a big ego, I think that translates to "overblown" ego.

Self confidence is a by-product of a healthy self image. One does not have to necessarily have a big ego to have a good self image or the resulting self confidence.

People who are usually described as having a big ego, are people who tend to be aggressive, self centered, "do unto others before they do it unto you", type people.

Big egos need stroked...because the self stroking isn't sufficient for their needs...although they do indulge themselves in a lot of that too....but evidently just aren't sure about believing themselves.

A healthy self image, on the other hand, breeds self confidence, and self respect, hence there is never the need to try to make them selves "look better than others". No need for devious behavior to force others to respect them. The person respects others just as much as themselves and has no need for "mind games".

Big Egos, in the game of leadership and management can enforce their will on others through the force of power. But like a dicatator, as soon as the power to enforce their will dwindles....the followers go elsewhere or rebel.

The greatest leaders, who have the most loyal and dedicated followers have always been those whose followers follow by choice, not by enforced servitude.

Jesus, Ghandi, Martin Luther King. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

To me Dennis Green displays the symptoms of a BIG ego, not necessarily a truely strong one.

He seems to have suffered the malaise of believing too many of his own press clippiings.

No...you don't have to be an aggressive, two-faced, person to be an effective leader... although those type "leaders" do very commonly exist.

To me, I hope the Cardinals become a success, in spite of, Dennis Green's apparent overblown ego.

I only hope that enough of his positive attributes overcome the self imposed limitations of that BIG ego. Maybe someday.....
  • He won't have to beg or coerce Andrea Cramer to compliment how important he is on national TV.
  • He won't have to treat players in a gutless, two-faced manner.
  • He can allow himself to be open and up front in his dealings with people.
  • He can be "media friendly" not only with the press but with the fans....who reallly ultimately create his paycheck anyway.
  • He can lead a "moral" married life.

I don't totally buy that "win at any cost" attitude.
How "you play the game" does count in my book.

And History has taught me that you CAN "win" without sacrificing "how you play the game."

Until Dennis Green changes, in those respects, I will continue to be a Card fan, in spite of him. No matter what, I'll still be rooting for the Cards long after he's gone. I will hope for the best for them, and thus him while he's here.....what else can ya' do?

Too bad he has to take some of the sweetness out of the cool aide along the way.

You have to have a lot of self confidance to particapate in pro sports. To lead a team you must show a sure handed knowledge of what you are doing and where you expect to end at. Green has a lot of I know I can do this, because I already have so I will follow the same map that got me there before. There is absoulutly nothing wrong with that. In time we will see if he made the right or wrong moves with the team by wins and loses. In his contract he has bonus clauses for playoffs etc; It will cost him money if he is wrong. You can be sure he is pulling every string he knows.

I think the Cards should have drafted the guy at Pittsburgh Ben Rothwhatever. They have not really improved the QB position by getting rid of Plummer/Blake. The only way to make that move worth it was to draft a blue chip QB. As of now it will be a while before McNown can even produce as much as Plummer did, even if he wasnt the long term solution. They could have possibly traded down, picked up an extra pick, and who knows maybe gotten a RB in addition. Nothing against Fitzgerald, but it doesnt make sense to neglect the QB position unless you have a Baltimore Ravens type defense (something the Cardinals DONT have, LOL).

What does this have to do with this thread. I thought we were talking about Greens Ego.

:newbie::thumbup:

Anyways I really hope McCown never produces like Plummer did. We dont need more INTS then TDS anymore.

How would drafting an unproven QB at the NFL level help us out? We'd just be having the questions for the QB position.

Yeah I know, I know QBs are never busts.

To have a big ego has nothing to do with winning IMO. Winning comes from self confidence and backing it up with performance. There are a lot of low profile small ego sports man and women out there who are real winners.

And to prove my point, there are a lot of winners with a big ego out there too :D.

I don't like people with a big ego. I rather go for somebody who just goes about his business successfully and does't make a big thing out of it. But thats just my personal opinion.

This is why I will not get real cosy with DG. But if he win's for us I will gladly bear him.

His ego gets in the way when he uses the media to his purpose. And he does that quite often. Just like Parcells.

Ego in a coach takes a backseat to good players on the field.

I totallly disagree.

Not when that ego interferes with getting the best players possible on the field and getting the best performance possible out of them.

You seem to overlook that little detail.

Green's history tells me he's smart enough to know that the best way to feed his ego is to make the Cardinals the best football team they can be. His "ego" comes from turning some fairly dismal programs around, so until he proves different a few years from now, I've got to think he's going to give his ego a boost by doing it again here.

Welcome to the board RoyGreen. Judging from your board name, I can see why you would be upset about the team drafting another WR for their top pick. :D

Green's history tells ME that he was/is stupid enough to not learn that feeding his ego eventually took the Minnesota Vikings on the road to the toilet bowl.
He inherited a talented team, managed to have SOME decent key assistants.
But couldn't even keep them. Randy Moss saved his bacon to a degree, or he would have possibly been run out sooner than he was.
.
It got so bad that the team decided it was in ther better long term interest to pay him off just to get rid of him. McCombs paid a big price to get him out the door.
Notice also the fan response he got on his "glorious return" to Minnesota.....

Until he proves any different from being someone who will ultimately sacrifice all other things to give his ego a boost, "doing it again here"...is not likely to be in the best interest of the Cardinal team and its fans.

Tango, you and I very seldom agree on anything, but in this instance you do have a very valid point. There are differences in how certain people run businesses (and this is a business). Some bosses are well liked and some are hated. Both can be successful, but it sure is a lot more fun working for a boss you like.

:lmao:

They didn't. '

They didn't play in ANY bowl.

Read a little closer....Notice I said "on the ROAD to the toilet bowl.

Just like the Superbowl....he never got there either. I think the Giants just about kicked them there though. :D

Hell, the Cards have been on the road to the super bowl too, and just like Minnesota, the journey has so far been just a little too long.

PS....with all this rumor about Dexter Jackson maybe being in Green's doghouse and possibly cut....and all the blah, blah, blah about all the great things Green accompllished in Minnesota..
I find it very funny AND ironic that Dexter Jackson has a super bowl ring AND a super bowl MVP trophy.
What's Denny got?
The Cards have as many superbowl appearances and wins as he does. :D

While we are comparing the Arizona and Minnesota franchises, perhaps we can look at playoff appearances in the last ten years, Pro Bowl appearances, winning percentage, etc. No wait, that might hurt too much.

Isn't the goal to win the superbowl?
Isn't anything any less than that, in that respect, still failure?
If you don't get to the superbowl, what real differences does it make whether you were 2 games or 6 games short?
Especially to all those who keep posting.....Win, baby, just win...at any cost?

Just for the record (not that it really even matters)...just how many more pro bowl appearances did "Denny Green players" make than Cardinal ones?
Inquiring minds would like to know?

Actually my name has no bearing on my thoughts of the draft. Roy Green was my favorite player from the St Louis era. I dont dislike the pick, but just think QB was more important to address. Given the fact it takes a couple of drafts to get the people you want anyway, they could get one next year unless one of the current QBs turns out well.
