By NFL rules, two players can come off IR after 8 weeks (per season). There is no designation to return that has to be in place when they go on IR, that is not a thing anymore. These rules changed in 2017.

Alford and Butler can both come back.

And avulsion fractures are absolutely not 3 month injuries.

Edit: Here, I think this reporting is more credible than random tweets:

https://www.sbnation.com/nfl/2017/5...-players-to-return-injured-reserve-per-season

Lots more info available out there as well.

Not sure what that tweet is supposed to convey.

The original thread/tweet of it says he will miss the season.

The other tweet states that because he was put on IR during preseason that he can't return.

Trust me I'm hoping that you are correct, but from what I remember and what I've looked up he can't come back.

They tried to stash him while letting Crabtree take his role.

I understand your point now, there is some minutia between being on the roster week 1 or not. If that's the case it was absolutely a boneheaded decision to IR Butler shortly before the season started and taking away his whole year.

Considering how many silly decisions they take, probably butler was going to be the more effective receiver

Just sucks that if true they did it merely because of Crabtree....and we cut him 3 weeks later.

We already have WRs that lack the ability to separate so at least Butler would have had size working for him (redzone issues...hello?)

Size and speed
As a vertical threat weapon could have helped Murray

Exactly.

I know of Butler's struggles, but it is also possible that he's just a gamer. Plays better when there is contact.

I could live with a few drops if he's making a couple big time plays a game.

Its kind of why I didn't like letting go of RSJ. I'm sorry but Charles Clay doesn't add much. At least RSJ (again with drop issues) is another big guy who can go up and make plays over the middle. Their size sort of helps Kyler with his lack of size. He's afraid to attempt some throws possibly because of vision. Its good to know you've got some big guys who can go up and make a play or knock it away.

It really seemed like Keim thought this team was going to be better than what it was so he went with Vet experience.

Keim showed he doesn't have much football acumen to be so fully confident in his ability
