NT:

Williams didn't make any splashes.

Lumpkin played hard and got some good pushes. He's more athletic than I thought. He has a chance.

DE:

Campbell showed up.

Dockett---DNP.

Holliday (starting in place of Dockett)---so-so

Carter---looks like a budding star at this position, and he's actually a better fit for Horton's defense at DE than Dockett.

Talley---the guy makes plays---nice tip on a screen pass.

Cohen---very active, good chaser.

ILB:

Washington---solid. Stepped up through the iso hole and tripped up Ingram for a zero yard gain, on one of the few good stops of the night.

Lenon---he likely would have come back and played if this were a regular season game, even though he got dinged up pretty good.

Bradley---defensive star of the night---and the reason why his development was slow last year is becoming more clear. Not only did he have to learn a new position, the new position required him to make the huddle and on the field calls. Without a regular off-season, that is a very tall order. Looks like this year, now that he knows his job and the calls, he can play rather than think.

Walker---tough night. late reacting to everything that came his way. Badly beaten in coverage on a few occasions.

Parker---made one nice tackle. Would have liked ot have seen more of him.

OLB:

Schofield was active.

Acho was quiet.

Haggans worked hard---still doesn't bring enough heat off the edge.

Groves---brought the heat and his jarring tackle picked up the whole defense as others followed with good hits.

Williams---didn't make a splash.

CB

Peterson---great interview.

Gay---disappointing start. One good tackle, a few whiffs. Loose coverage.

Jefferson and Toler---too much cushion. Jefferson had nice closing speed on the out pass, but got turned around.

Adams---poor coverage---surprisingly soft effort from him, except he made one of the top ST plays of the night, per usual. His ST value is so high, he is going to stick. And look for him to be more aggressive as the nickel CB as the pre-season progresses.

Butler & Green---DNP.

Fleming---he will be starting at RCB sooner rather than later---yup "Sooner"!

Parker---best cover play of the night. I have been raving about this kid, since the day we signed him. He has a legitimate shot of making the roster. With all the depth at CB you might think that's crazy---but---this kid is a gamer and he's a sticky cover who has a nose for the ball (interception in Red & White game).

Nixon---god fumble recovery. This kid has talent.

S

Wilson---DNP

Rhodes---was mediocre again. Unless he starts getting with the program, he will be traded or released.

Johnson---mediocre in this game.

Sanders---made some good tackles.

Bethel---this kid brings it at SS and on STs (FG block---gunner highlight reel tackle).

Gideon---played an excellent game. Had the score saving interception in the end zone and some good hits. He's more physical than advertised.

Elder---hit of the night for the Cardinals. Exactly what the Cardinals have not been getting from the other FSs. Horton LOVES and THRIVES on these type of statement hits. Just ask Troy Polamalu.

The youth in this secondary is very very impressive. I believe the Cardinals will try to trade Rhodes---Wilson will be give a specialty/hybrid role and Bethel could be on the field just as much if not more.

STILL can't defend a screen pass. Awful in that regard---and the tackling was pitiful. This is why we can't count on this defense being dominant---not when they show bad habits like this. Plus---they still haven't played big games during the first half of a season when those games can set the tempo for the whole season.

Pump the brakes buddy. Rhodes and Toler are not going anywhere.

I love Gideon though. Kid really surprized me. Bethel as well.

If what Rashad Johnson did out there was "mediocre" then I am driving to Flagstaff to walk on as a safety.

I can take bad angles, miss tackles and get burn consistently for the league minimum.

Schofield was active, but not effective. Still can't play against the run.

Oh, and Mitch, just put Justin Bethel on your roster, cause that is where he is going to be.

I am not surprised in the least with his play yesterday.

One more thought. Sam Acho had a terrible first series. The kid got caught inside when he should have contained the edge on several plays. This allowed Sproles to easily get the corner and make some big runs.

The D sure didn't look like the tough physical group we were expecting. But then Dockett and Wilson were out and those are our two toughest most physical players.

The starters have shown what they can do and most won't look good during pre-season unless they were already on the bubble, I project Mitch cutting 8 of last years starting roster by pre-season game 5 based on their luke warm efforts.

The youth movement is ON for Ray Horton.

You would have laughed this time last year if I said Acho would beat out Porter, wouldn't you?

Rhodes has to start hitting people and making plays on the ball or he is gone. Period.

Everything I've seen of Bethel I like.

But playing safety involves more than blocking kicks and being a devestating gunner. I'd like see how he covers, how fast he is to get to the sidelines to help out his CB in deep coverage, how intinctive he is in the box, how well he lines up the defense.

Stuff like that.

But He is my #1 young guy I'm pulling for.

Yeah, he'll need to develop. He's got a ways to go, but he'll make this (53)roster!

The secondary is young and active. The spot opposite PP seems like a key decision. Not sure Gay is the answer there. He didn't show enough. I'd like to see the Toller, Jefferson, Flemming combo out there against some starting units,.

I dont care what Rhodes does in the PS in his two series per game. He will not be benched or traded this off season. You thinking otherwise is just downright silly. And NO nothing would have surprised me about Porter.

Yep Acho was really bad the first drive of the game.

No. That's revisionist history. Everyone was pretty down on Porter.

I think it's pretty safe to say Rhodes and Toler aren't going anywhere this season. JMHO.

Mitch, I wish you could see Horton in practice. We had him right in front of us several times and could hear him talking to his players. He's amazing. He never looses his concentration or his cool. His eyes are focused like he's picking out carrion. The guy is special.

Too much snap judgement here Mitch. Rhodes and Toler aren't going any where.

As far as the game went:

DL was underwhelming but not too surprising considering we don't ever really show our hand in the preseason. Can't say any really impressed me other than Carter and Talley. Other than that....doo-doo. And the starters didn't play enough or long enough to make an assessment.

LB. The star of the night most certainly was Bradley. I'm a conservative guy when assessing football and I think you're right now Bradley. Calling the defense without any offseason would be a tough assignment and Bradley literally looked like a different player. Acho was awful. I keyed in on him a few times and he was playing flatfooted. And when he went inside and didn't contain. That was awful. I disagree, I saw Schofield make some plays. If yesterday was an indication, I think Schofield is going to make some plays. He looks stronger and more confident. Groves looks like he'll be an answer at the other backup spot and he's suited to play in this defense after being miscast as a 4-3 end and a 4-3 LB.

CB. No one looked good really, though you're right about Parker he stood out.

S. Bethel looks like he'll take a roster spot, does that move Adams off the roster? Elders hit was sick and he played well last year at ASU. He should have a chance to make the roster along with Bethel.
