Now I'm confused..

My point is that a HC calling plays from the sideline isn't any different from a OC doing it because most OCs call plays from the sidelines. If most or all OCs have someone relaying info or pictures from the press box than I don't see why that would be different than if the HC is the one calling the plays as apposed to the OC.

Most Coordinators are in the press box not on the sidelines. The TV folks show shots of them in there all the time.

DCs sure, but like I said before without even trying I can tell you that Jay Gruden, Arians, Bevell, Miller and McCoy were all calling plays from the sidelines. I'm sure if I felt like looking further into it I could find quite a few more that call plays from the sidelines as well.

Haley, Shanahan, McDaniels, Philbin, Shottenheimer, Andy Reid, etc.... Most do.

The only one I noticed who doesn't is Greg Roman from San Fran. Mularkey was in the press box for Atlanta last year also.

Maybe. I don't follow those teams closely just know I've seen a lot of shots of guys upstairs.

Could be guys might want to be on the sidelines because the hand signals or semaphore is more complex and they want to manage that. UT had their OC upstairs last season.

Which is better? I have no idea.

Yeah I looked into it. I looked at every OC from the NFC this year and almost all of them were on the sidelines during games. I'm guessing I would likely find much of the same in the AFC as well. I think it's more common for DCs to be upstairs than it is for OCs because they probably want face to face time with the QB during games so they can quickly figure out what went wrong and fix it.

So you looked into it before the question was posed?

No. Before I had a feeling that most OCs were on the sidelines during games and now I looked into it in order to confirm it.
I'm in the midst of doing likewise, and it seems to be a mixed bag. Koetter and Smith were up in the box when both were coordinators with Atlanta. Sean Peyton moved upstairs temporarily when injured on the sidelines. Martz and Cunningham preferred the sidelines in Detroit. I'm pretty sure Trestman was a box guy. Mike McCoy preferred the sideline. Adam Gase was torn in two directions. I think Norm Chow preferred the sidelines.

Too bad, some enterprising young writer hasn't charted the coaching methods of each of the 32 teams the way they chart team by team salary cap status.

I stand by my original point, though - that even sideline play calling relies on eyes, audio and photos from the press box (either from a coordinator or some other assistant).

This year's OCs in the NFC that were on the sidelines:

Kyle Shanahan - WAS
Marty Mornhinweg - PHI
Scott Linehan - DET
Bill Callahan - DAL
Kevin Gilbride - NYG
Mike Tice - CHI
Tom Clements - GB
Bill Musgrave - MIN
Dirk Koetter - ATL
Pete Carmichael, Jr. - NO
Mike Sullivan - TB
Brian Schottenheimer - STL
Darrell Bevell - SEA
Mike Miller - AZ
Rob Chudzinski - CAR

I have 15 out of 16 OCs, but some of them may have had play calling HCs. I would go through the AFC, but I'm too lazy to do it right now.

I don't know if this has been posted or not, but Harold's brother Jonathan is the center for the 49ers.

Jason LaConforda sp? just stated that Tom Moore will be joining Arians staff. Now there's your WOW factor.

I think Moore likes coaching from the sidelines as well.

A couple things to consider...

1-Arians will be calling plays and will be focused on working with the QB, along with Tom Moore (Offensive Asst) and Freddie Kitchens (QB Coach). This means we have AT LEAST 3 experienced coaches focused on improving our QB play.

2-Harold Goodwin as the offensive coordinator means we will also have at least 3 offensive line coaches. Goodwin, our offensive line coach and our offensive line asst. Again, 3 coaches focused on improving our offensive line play.

We will see if the plan works, but you have to be excited about having 6 coaches on staff to specifically work to improve our QB and OL play.

I am VERY excited about our offensive coaches. Dockett's excitement about his role on D is encouraging as well. It's nice to see one of our Vet leaders get excited about our new DC. I will still be seriously let down if AW is let go. Like, I will be crushed. He is Mr. Cardinal. He bleeds Cardinal red more than any guy on the field. And keeping him will show something from a moral standpoint for our front office too. That they stand by the guys that have stood by them. Loyalty isn't a word that our front office is terribly familiar with. And it needs to become one

It's really up to the Coord. Didn't Clancy and Bill Davis roam the sidelines during the games? Same with Haley?

Horton was in the box, but don't remember about Miller.

Must be a family of o-linemen....another brother Jonathan was an o-lineman at Ohio University and transferred to Michigan when Harold got a coaching job there.

I am pretty excited. I strong feeling this going to work out great for the Cardinals. I am getting to old to watch any more losing seasons.

My impression from Arians introductary presser was that he would be calling the plays until he found someone who was better at it. However his tone when he said that was basically "I haven't found a better play caller than me and probably won't". So I highly doubt we will ever see Arians not calling the plays.

Goodwin has the title of OC but is nothing more than a OL coach who will help Arians by making photo copies and such. That's the way I see it.

That's not been my experience. What I've seen is that most coordinators seem to be on the sideline where they can talk to their QB/OL/WR whatever when the offense isn't on the field, instead of yelling at them on the Red Phone.

There are obviously exceptions, and this may be a cyclical thing. I remember that Brett Favre used to hop on the phone after Packers drives to talk to whomever was in the booth.

To Jeff's point, it doesn't really matter who's up in the booth and who's talking to the players on the sideline, as long as someone's there making the communication and seeing how the defense is responding to what the offense is doing.

Arians is going to call the offensive plays, Horton would not of.

I just noticed the fact our new HC is African American. I did not know and do not care. I am just sorry that race somehow entered the conversation. I sure hope it had nothing to do with the choice. I hope he was chosen based on some sound football principals and nothing else. Actually I had some interest in Lovie Smith. I knew a little about him. Give our new HC a good QB he he may do wonders for the team. I suspect Horton let the Cards know he was not interested in this organization anymore and I could not blame him.

Somehow, I doubt this question would arise if he was white.

Arians, the Head Coach (HC) is white. Harold Goodwin (OC) is African American, as is our DC, Bowles.

seriously. This racial BS has gotten so old. I am a little skeptical on Bowles, but the guy I really wanted was black himself. I'm stoked about all our coaches on the O side of the ball though

I never did like the Rooney rule. IMO, owners want to win. They don't care about the color of skin. They only care about the color of green and how much green they can collect. Just like any other business the "The good ole boy hiring system" is enforced.

Most of the controversy among the Cardinal family has been more of a Defensive candidate being tripped up by Offensive team need than a minority candidate being ignored or gamed by a White ownership.

for the most part. Old money is old money though. And they DO have certain, sometimes messed up, ways of doing business. But as the changing of the guard, especially in professional football where the sport is made up of so many blacks as it is, is taking place, and the guys calling the shots are getting younger, race will become less and less relevant
