Hartwell vs Hayes

We need depth, not a 4 mil a year LB. Hartwell can play inside and out and is about 245. He is an upgrade. And don't forget, Darling only played well last year. The year before he was miserable.

I just think Hartwell is going to cost alot of money at a position that we already have filled. This team needs to sign at least two if not three cornerbacks and a topnotch offensive lineman before they go after players they don't need. If we keep LJ Shelton then we just need to bring in another guard unless we are going to put Ross there.

Hartwell is prime rib.....not that Hayes is chopped liver. The perfect combo is Hartwell at the "mike" and Hayes at the "will". Both Hayes and Darling can play the "mike" as well if necessary through injury.

Hayes struggled as the defensive signal caller.....Hartwell has been there and done that......and in the absense of a run stuffing NT, Hartwell provides some very needed horsepower in the middle.

Someone help me understand the terminology. The "Mike" is the middle linebacker and is normally the bigger, slower guy who is mainly responsible for stuffing the run. The "Will" plays the weakside and is the speedy guy who can cover the RB's and TE's when they go out. The "Sam" plays the strong side and is a little slower than the "Will"???

"A chance Hayes will be better", Hartwell already is a lot better. The important thing is that we needed to replace a "drag down" tackler playing the middle with a "step up & fill" downhill tackler. (I believe this has been an albatross hanging over our defense for several years).

I feel Hayes fits the new job description better than MacDawg did, but still represents somewhat of an unknown entity.

Hartwell fits the new job description even better than Hayes and has a proven track record.

Next maybe to Warner, of all the guys we've brought in, Hartwell's the one I want most.

I think it is because of homerism over Hayes. He is one of the most widely overrated by people on this board.

Stength: Gerald Hayes doesn't wait for ball carriers to get to him, he goes right in after them. Gerald Hayes is an above average blitzing MLB. Gerald Hayes is a good athlete. Gerald Hayes is a good tackler. Weakness: Gerald Hayes is a bit small for an MLB. Gerald Hayes is not good in pass coverage and will occassionally misread the play. Development: Gerald Hayes is somewhat unique for the MLB position, in that he's better rushing the QB than covering TEs and RBs. Gerald Hayes was one of the most successful run stuffers in college football. Gerald Hayes should be able to step in and play on running plays. NFL offenses, however, are generally masters of disguise and Gerald will need to spend a lot of time with the linebackers coach studying film if he wants to turn into an every down MLB down the road. Situational MLB are not very common in the NFL and Gerald Hayes will not be effective unless the defense is designed with his skills in mind. Gerald Hayes is a good enough athlete to be a good special teams performer. Fantasy Football Rating: Gerald Hayes would be an excellent blitz backer and always makes a lot of tackles in the running game, so watch the first couple games to see how effectively Arizona uses his talents before deciding on him.
