Well we will see, I for one don't think Horford will be better than Williams next year. In the long term obviously but not next year.
Horford is a bit short, he will need some time to adjust to the NBA.

Horford is not short. He is 6-9 and listed 6-10. Most the NBA now plays guys 6-9 thru 6-11 at center. 7-footers are rare in today's higher speed game. At 6-9, Horford makes up a lot with his super long arms and big weight. He can very well rank up there as a traditional big. There have been hundreds of 6-9 / 6-10 successful centers; including Kurt Thomas.

lucky number 9, my friend. Just think number 9 for the hawks pick:

9th pick = marion
9th pick = amare
9th pick = ???

1st pick = Kareem Abdul Jabbar
1st pick = Tim Duncan
1st pick = Hakeem Olajuwon
1st pick = Shaquille O'Neal
1st pick = Chris Webber
1st pick = Lebron James
1st pick = Dwight Howard
1st pick = Yao Ming
1st pick = Elton Brand
1st pick = Allen Iverson
1st pick = Patrick Ewing
1st pick = David Robinson
1st pick = Magic Johnson
1st pick = James Worthy
1st pick = Bill Walton
1st pick = Bob Lanier
1st pick = Elvin Hayes
1st pick = ???

We never had one, it's time. And that's why we don't have a championship. We lost coinflips for Robinson and KAJ.

San Antonio has it's rings because they tanked and got lucky. Houston has their rings because they got lucky with Olajuwon. LA owes the showtime Lakers to 2 #1 picks and then got Shaq in free agency....

I'm native of St. Louis who's a big fan of the AZ and STL Cardinals - as well as the Hawks (they were in St. Louis until late 60;s) . I generally read the board for Cardinals stuff but have started checking the Suns forum since the JJ signing.

I really think you guys are underestimating the Hawks as we're much better than people recognize. Horford and Law will be great additions to the team once they adapt to the NBA game. They have great team chemistry and a solid core of young athletic players. JJ, Josh Smith, and Marvin Williams (breakout year) will be helped by Law (an underrated PG). The post defense will be much better with Shelden Williams and Solomon Jones..and Horford.

I really believe that we make the playoffs this year – and no, I’m not high on Hawks Kool-Aid. I remember last year how you guys were so confident on getting our pick that you’d already penciled in Horford (or whoever) into the rotation. Just remember that before ordering Mayo jerseysJ

I enjoy reading your board and do hope that the Suns have a great year….but don't forget, defense wins championships…

You are right he is actually as tall as Amare was coming out of highschool but you are wrong on his wingspan.

It's just 7', thats not long arms and certainly not super long arms. And his standing reach is 8'11 thats shorter than just about any big man in the lottery in the last 5 years except Shelden Williams who is at just 8'8 despite a 7'5 wingspan and being just 1 inch shorter than Horford.

Amare has a 7'2 wingspan. 9'1 standing reach
Nene has a 7'5 wingspan. 9'1 standing reach

Some people call Amare short sometimes, but he has 2 inches in standing reach on Horford.

Yeah, unfortunately the Hawks surpassed everyone's expectations and made the playoffs... oh, wait, that's not what happened. The Hawks were bad enough to have a decent chance of having a Top 3 pick. We wouldn't mind if that happened again.

I enjoy reading your board and do hope that the Suns have a great year….but don't forget, defense wins championships…

No, a balanced team wins championships. Great defense will get you nowhere if you're not competent offensively. Just ask Jeff Van Gundy.

Welcome aboard, by the way.

Who do you think drops out of the playoffs? Orlando? Ok obviously Boston will take 1 spot.

So who else drops out for the Hawks to make it ?

That's completely delusional.

First picks aren't so great. With the luck Suns have been getting at number 9 (Amare, Marion) I'd rather roll with lucky pick 9 than a risky pick number 1 with a questionable and still-developing OJ Mayo - who by the way said might continue 2nd year college:

1st pick = Pervis Ellison
1st pick = Michael Olowakandi
1st pick = Kenyon Martin
1st pick = Kwame Brown
1st pick = Andrew Bogut

Horford and Law will be great additions to the team once they adapt to the NBA game.

-Key words: Once they adapt

but don't forget, defense wins championships…

-I think Hawks will need this helpful tip more than the Suns.

Bottom line: Hawks still have a confused depth chart. They still don't know who their point guard will be: Claxton, Lue, Law? Is Law ready? Has Speedy slowed down with his injuries? Can Lue every stay healthy? Will Joe be handling the ball? On top of that, the Hawks big man rotation (Horford, both Williams, Zaza) are nothing compared to other frontlines of the NBA.

I predict Suns getting pick 6, 7, 8, or 9.

They have TVs in Houston so I do get the chance to watch good teams:) Don't get me wrong, I like the Suns style of play but they're never going to win a ring without having a great defense. I don't see them having that this year. Oh I forgot, you guys just signed Brian Skinner...

Of course the Hawks need to improve their defense. My point is that if you consider yourself to a true contender (which the Hawks aren't) your defense needs to be of championship caliber..and I don't see that with Suns.

In today's NBA , coaches and GMs are looking for athletic players who can play multiple positions. So what looks like confusion to some is really an adaptation to the trend. The game is all about match-ups and having versatile players is a must. Where the Suns are a perfect example of that with Diaw, Marion, Amare who may look redundant but they all play multiple positions...

Law will be the starting PG by the All-Star break and will get 'end game' minutes early in the season..he's better than people think. If healthy, Speedy will get his share of minutes and will contribute. Lue is a gamer and can make big shots. I believe he'll get traded at some point...you forgot AJ who'll also contribute.

The front court rotation/minutes need to be worked out but it will. You'll see a big improvement from Shelden Williams and of course, Horford can play now. We've a solid rotation across the 4-5 spots and I don't see many teams that can dominate us..not saying we're great by any means but we will surprise some folks. Frankly, I don't see the Suns front court being dominant....oh I forgot, you added Brian Skinner..

The Hawks cannot be saved by the ping-pong balls this year. This year the Suns just need the Hawks to suck. Surely, the Hawks are due to break out soon, but they have defied odds before.

From a talent standpoint, I think the Hawks have some potential. My hopes of the continued bad play is Mike Woodson, who has proven to be one of least competant coaches in the NBA. This is a bunch of players who aren't a team and that starts from the coach.

I can see me really enjoying this thread this year, provided the Hawks aren't any good.

Can we get a pot going for someone to take a baseball bat to the leg of Joe Johnson?

You know nothing like an ACL, MCL, PCL tear that will affect his career, just a swift blow to his Tibia on November 1st, that should put him out a good 6-8 months, but by next year he will be completly healed and ready for next season...

And we would have the overwhelming #1 pick....

Or does that make me a bad person....

ok.. well then I hope we trade Marion to the Hawks, he brings his ego and attitude problems to the hawks and they have major chemistry issues, they implode and lose 60 games...

that should do it...

I know it's only pre-season but we're looking good so far. I'm so confident that we'll make the playoffs that I'll be willing to wash some cars next year if we don't make it. I'm coming out next year for a Cardinals game so will be in town. if we do get in - I'll settle for a Corona:) Anyone willing to take my offer??

I think the Hawks will actually surprise a lot of people, I just have this feeling they will end up with around 40 wins and soime how finish between 7th and 9th... That pick will probably end up between 12th and 17th judging by the Suns luck.

No matter how well the hawks do, so much of the east conf improved this summer. They didnt make any moves that makes them stand out of the crowd. They grabbed an iffy point guard, and their starting center is a rookie (granted, he may be the headliner for ROY with oden out and durant not dazzling anyone)

They still have an oddball coach and questionable front office. Their team chemistry is questionable and their bball IQ level doesnt seem to exceed any other east team but the knicks (not saying much)

A Hawks fan posts respectful comments to our board, with insight about the Hawks, which is what this thread is about. As well as a comment about defense (which is indeed a shortcoming with our Suns).

And he's met with a vague putdown. Shame! ASFN is supposed to be at a higher level than that.

You beat Miami without Wade and Shaq in preseason in overtime and that means you are doing good? Whatever..

Just a couple little tidbits. The Suns scoring differential was second in the league last year, behind San Antonio. Their fg% allowed was 14th in the league, matched with their #1 position for offensive fg%. They were #1 in differential between the two.

Oh, and about the front line. The first team all-nba center does help a little.
