did you guys all start rooting for other teams when the cards/ASU got into their legal tiff? or was it over Jake?

In the old days we would always get some posts that so and so was released (former ASU players) and we need to bring him in..Jeremy Staat, Jr Redmond, Scott Peters were recent releases..:D

Juan Roque could whoop Leonard Davis' butt any day. Lets get Keith Poole in here and get Erik Flowers to be the answer at DE

If we have the season that everybody is predicting, I predict there will be a pretty decent following, especially with the exciting brand of football that ASU plays. With one really questionable game, the USC game, ASU has a pretty easy schedule. Here's hoping that we make it to the Rose Bowl!!

Eason (ASU) is still on the roster..but if we sign anyone in the seconardy he will go to the practice squad..which reminds me of a question - I thought this was the third season eason had tried to hook on with a team - is is still practice squad eligible?..for his sake - he should hope so.

Yeah, one thing that sucks about ASU is the fact that there are 70,000 students, and we can't even sell out Sun Devil Stadium. It is pretty embarassing. Being from South Bend, and being a life long Notre Dame fan, the overall apathy towards sports in general here sucks. Maybe someday we'll have that additude, but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

I remember when we moved here, and I was shocked at how blase the fan base was. I had been going to Texas A&M games for a few years, and when I went to ASU games, I was surprised at the difference in atmosphere. And, that was when Frank Kush was still coach.

The biggest problem they have this year is the schedule. It sucks. Who wants to go see them play NAU or Utah St.? I'll go to three or four games, like I always do, but those two games, no way.

Mayb it's more than that, From Saturday's Letters To The Editor:

Your Turn: ASU football sold out its fans

Aug. 30, 2003

I think you are missing the boat on why ASU football attendance has declined over the past several years.

I was a season ticket holder for 15 years until I canceled in 1999. My parents were season ticket holders from 1969 to 1999. We, and many others we converse with, canceled for the same reasons: ASU was trading tradition for money.

ASU's motto became, "It takes money to build facilities, to build a winning team, to build fan support." On the contrary, we supported football if they won or lost. If you look back, we had some awful years of poorly played football, but we loved our team and the tradition of ASU football.

But slowly commercialism encroached on tradition. Advertising signs started to flood our senses. A big-screen TV was installed, not to give us replays, but to give us advertising with ear-blowing volume. The band could not whip us into a cheering frenzy during timeouts or between plays because we had to hear the Coke commercial or when the volleyball team was going to play.

The students, who have stood and cheered behind our team for as long as anyone can remember, were moved to allow for higher-priced seats. All these efforts added up to fan indifference. That, in my opinion, is why attendance has steadily dropped, not the winning percentage.

See here's the Catch 22 that you run into: If you play better competition, you may get more people to watch a more exciting game, but if you lose the games, then nobody cares anyway. ASU this year has clearly chosen to have a pretty lax out of conference schedule, with the hopes that success will breed interest. I hope they're right.

Man, did that front seven kick Auburn's butt or what? I'm watching that team all year with an eye on the draft. I think that WR they have is going to be a good one too.

ASU doesn't have 70,000 students; ASU doesn't play in a small town like South Bend, where there is only 1 attraction; ASU plays in a transiant city, and outdraws the professional sports teams in the Valley. In fact ASU has the 3rd highest football attendance by a team that plays in a major professional sports market, behind only U Dub and U of Miami...Furthermore, as ASU continues to win, they will continue to increase their ticket sales, just as any athletic team in any sport would do...

As for USC, Pac 10 teams are going to put points up against that great defense. People are going to forget how great the USC D played against Auburn, and just think that it was a fluke. Afterall if you talk to any college fan who lives in the east, they'll tell you that the Pac doesn't play D. They just don't realize that the offenses in the Pac are much better(in general) than any other conference in the country...

Lastly, I think the Cards should draft Terr...oops, they already missed that opportunity;)

Excuse me, they have 57,000 students, and the fact remains the same. There are thousands of students, and many more thousands of graduates that choose to not go see a very exciting team, like the ASU team last year. I don't think you got my point: at ASU, there is just an overall apathy towards the sports teams. For anybody who has been to a Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, or Texas game, you know the difference. You sound like you work for the ASU PR department with the "3rd highest" statistic. While it is a nice stat, the fact is, that if you go to a game other than the U of A game, you are almost guaranteed not to see a sellout. Some teams have waiting lists for season tickets: ASU basically gives them away. I love ASU, but the fan atmosphere is not great.

I've gone to ASU games since 77, and the old poop Sun Angels and ASU faculty always far outnumber the students in attendance. It's even more pathetic at ASU basketball games.

But, AZBaller has a point ASUChris. Look at those towns you mentioned, Ann Arbor, South Bend, Norman, etc. The University IS the THING in town. I went to Texas A&M for 3 years. School about as big as ASU but in a town of only 100K. 25- 35,000 students go to midnight yell practice much less the game! But, there isn't a lot of options either on a Friday night. Drink beer at a bar or a frat party, and then head on over for the yell practice or the game. That's about it. Same way in those other towns. It's not ever going to be like that here at ASU, it's a completely different culture.

AJCardFan, that was what I was trying to say...I've been to South Bend to see ASU get destroyed by Notre Dame, I've been to Lincoln twice to see ASU get blown out, I've been to Eugene Oregon to see the Ducks play ASU...All of those games were sellouts, and all of those crowds were impressive, but all those games were in 1 horse towns...To compare ASU's attendance with any other school's attendance just isn't fair, especially considering that ASU outdraws every other sports team in Arizona...

Furthermore, the 57,000 students at ASU are spread over 3 campuses. Varying from the far east campus to the main campus, and all the way to the west campus...

I agree with you, Chris, about the apathy surrounding ASU athletics, I don't like it, but it will change as ASU starts to win, just as it will change for the Cards as they start to win...

To answer your questions pinnacle

Some very good discussion here on ASU.

First of all, I didn't like football until I got into college. Didn't follow the NFL or college.

After being at ASU I began following college FB avidly. Followed ASU's players as they went into the pros. Had some interest in the Cardinals - one of my roomies was a die-hard Cards fan - and it became accute when Jake joined the Cardinals. I kind of felt like they were "my" team. Then I started really watching how the Cardinals did business. I got frustrated and eventually apathetic towards the Cards. Then they went after Karsten Golf Course, and a well-spring of hate was born. Then I found out about the suit, and I now believe the Bidwill's to be evil incarnate.

As for Plummer leaving, it was better for both parties. No hard feelings on that score. Overall, they paid Plummer more than he deserved so it's not like I can really ***** about that, can I?

AZBALLER is right on when it comes to the market and how well ASU does compared to a) other schools in pro-sports towns and b) the pro-sports in this town. Consider that last year was ASU's worst year for attendance in a very long time and they still outdrew all the pro-sports in terms of attendance per game.

As for the schedule ASUChris, I couldn't disagree more. I don't believe you realise what goes into scheduling. Our home slate isn't "huge" but we're playing two BCS teams on the road. We'll get Iowa's return trip next year. Even if Iowa and UNC are down this year, you never know what quality of team you will face when you initially schedule the team as it is usually ~5-8 years or more in advance. (Right now, ASU is scheduled through ~2012).

I totally agree with ripping the athletic department in the late 90s for several reasons. 1) They totally sold out. Loud, loud, loud commercials every game all game. Right in the middle of the pbp by the announcer. Horrible. 2) They were leveraging 1-2 successful seasons and making people pony up, when over the last 10 years it was something like 7-8 poor to mediocre seasons with just 2 good years and people weren't going to shell out hundreds or thousands more to watch poor to mediocre ball. They lost a lot of goodwill in that drive. (Over the long run though, it may be OK as people are now used to ponying up that money. It may end up being good for the long term health of the program even if it did alienate many fans.) They do however appear to be earning some of that goodwill back, as they dropped ticket prices throughout the stadium and instituted "Koetter's Corner", a $5 ticket only purchaseable during the week of the game. Those kinds of moves will bring people back over the long haul. 3) They immediately started spending like they already had the money. Result? Deficit.

As for the Cards and picking up some of those guys that got cut - I don't think Redmond would be a good fit for the Cards, FWIW. He's been real nicked up lately. Belicheck (sp?) often said that he would show "flashes" in every phase of the game that they would put him on, but that he was never very consistent. To me, sounds like a confidence/focus problem. Getting cut may help fix that. It may well be that his NFL story lived and died with the winning drive in the Super Bowl.

Thx for talking ASU, ;)
