Hikers, campers warned about assassins in parts of Pinal County

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office is warning hikers and campers of a dangerous threat this holiday weekend -- cartel assassins.

Sheriff Paul Babeu is recommending anyone using back roads, campsites and trails in western Pinal County to be extra cautious and consider carrying a firearm if they are in any wilderness areas.

According to PCSO, Mexican cartels are sending the "sicarios" -- groups of assassins -- to kill rivals trying to steal their drugs. The armed enforcers are expected to target "rip crews", who ambush other transport groups to steal their drugs and money.

"We are taking this threat seriously and believe that the public and my deputies deserve to know that there is an elevated risk of encountering gun violence in certain areas of Pinal County," Babeu said in a Monday press release.

Multiple gun battles in areas south of Pinal County between cartel assassins and rival drug runners have been reported to law enforcement agencies. Deputies have also seen a rise in armed encounters with cartel drug runners, PCSO said.

Hey, at least these "sicarios" politely wait for the enemy drug runners to pass through Pima and Santa Cruz counties before getting into these wild shootouts we've managed to hear absolutely nothing about. Good thing Babeu is bringing this up, since the media here cares nothing about reporting criminal violence. :sarcasm:

You have to wonder whether this is real or just another campaign stunt. Sad.

He has a poor history when it comes to these sorts of statements ....

1. The murdered Jewish family from Tempe, which he blamed on migrants but was murder-suicide. 2. The deputy who faked a big shootout with "drug runners". 3. The school bus full of kids going to summer camp that got harassed because Babeu thought it was full of illegal immigrant children.

So I am guessing if you are a camper or a hiker one should be best prepared for a gun battle?

I'm not opposed to carrying a gun but if I do so, I usually do it discreetly. Carrying a gun can often pose a threat to those who would use violence.

There was a guy from cbs news last night hiking in pinal county to try and interview these lookouts. The lookouts wouldnt talk to him, looked nervous and he just left.

So they are up there, scouting the area but I'm not so sure its for cartel wars, more so scouting for threats to the drug shipment.
