If Hill signed a one-year contract at minimum salary, the league would have paid amounts above the minimum salary for a two-year veteran (for Hill that would have been roughly 400K of 1.2M). And he would have counted for 800K or so against our cap.

Sarver lost 2M next year by signing Cheap Hill, the guy who earned over $100M during his career and bothers you for $600k. :sarcasm:

What's your point exactly?

I hate to do it - BUT does anyone think that this signing maybe a precursor to jump back into serious KG trade talk. One of the reasons I felt things fell apart is because the Suns couldn't get into the top of the lottery to get an adequate SF replacement (such as Brewer, Yi, or Jeff Green) should they have traded Marion. Maybe they wanted to see if they could get Hill before sending Marion (along with Barbosa and ATL #1) over there.

I think its naive to think KG will be back in Minny next season and I can't see who is going to make a better offer.

Is this the calm before the storm.

FYI - I love this signing. Finally a guy who can distribute or create his own shot since Joe. I don't think we should count on him too much but he is a nice luxury to have at the minimum. This makes up for not getting Finley two years ago IMO.

I hope so. :)

We are going to need a lot of luck right now to have this team stay healthy, but I like what we have here, although KG would make my happier.

Hill to sign with Phoenix after agreeing to deal

By Chad Ford

Hill's agent, Lon Babby, said Thursday that Hill has agreed in principle to a two-year deal -- known as a bi-annual exception -- for $1.8 million this season and almost $2 million in 2008-09 at the player's option. Teams can offer $1.2 million as the mid-level exception for veterans, but can offer the bigger $1.8 million bi-annually.
His rumours are almost as laughable as his understanding of the cap.

I think this means that D'Antoni's default lineup is going to have Stoudemire and Marion as the two bigs, and three of Nash/Barbosa/Bell/Hill filling out the other spots. That's a team that will be completely unable to get stops, and won't be able to corral the rebound even when the other team does miss. It looks like the Suns are still going to need 110 points to win most nights.
Isn't that D'Antoni's philosophy anyway? Best defense is more offense??

The situation is simple. There is no reasonable way to get KG this season. If he decides to wait a year, the Suns will have KT off the books and they could sign KG for a full MLE.

Apparently, Hill was told he would be a starter.

Hill was also told he will be in the Suns starting lineup alongside Steve Nash, Raja Bell, Shawn Marion and Amaré Stoudemire.

Interesting that they supposedly told him he'd start. I figured he'd get a few starts here and there, but not full time.

Inserting Grant Hill into the lineup with Steve Nash simply raises the Suns up another notch or two.

The team IQ and talent just took one helluva leap.

Ummmm ... wouldn't the $1.2 million deal be the veteran minimum? Got a feeling Chad Ford's job is in jeapordy ...

yeah, Ford know's nothing about the cap and how it works. he seems to add in as much filler words as possible so that it looks like he knows what he's talking about. "mid-level excemption for veterans"? wow

You think? It seems like ESPN has been scraping the bottom of the barrel this NBA off season. They would have to fire a lot of personnel. :)

Yep, that's the minimum salary for 10-years-and-more veterans.

I think Jones started all of two games. Its semantics but Hill as a starter replaces Diaw in the line up and Diaw replaces Jones spot. Actually when it all comes down to it I think Jumaine Jones (he is still under contract right?) will replace James Jones role.

I think Diaw will have a bounce back year and he will have too with the likelihood of Hill getting injured.

I am sorry but that starting lineup doesnt make me happy. We are not going to win anything of consequence with Marion at PF. In order to keep up with the other guys i think its imperative we secure another rotation player.....

I love the signing of Hill but I sure hope the Suns are not pegging their hopes on Hill staying healthy to win a title. The 2 rookies will practically get no playing time IMO. If Hill gets hurt (which is not out of the realm of possibility) and the rookies get no time, then we are rolling out with basically the same team as last year.

So the Suns must be confident that they can win the title with what they have and Hill is just a bonus if healthy.

Calling Grant Hill cheap because he costs his new team's owner $2M per year by reaching for $600k was sarcastic. Not.

Cheaper player than James Jones and hopefully a higher yield. Again it all depends on Grant Hill's health.

Also, anyone but me get the names of Grant Hill and Brian Grant getting interchanged in their mind. Not the players but the names.

I believe Jones started quite a few games, especially towards the end of the season and in playoffs.

What makes you think Jumaine will see the court in D'Antoni system even if he is under contract. I say 0.5% chance.

I think Diaw will have a bounce back year and he will have too with the likelihood of Hill getting injured.
I really hope so... That brings up another point, insurance policy in case Hill gets injured. I don't want to go thru another post-season looking at another excuse "but we did not have our full roster, Hill got injured"...
