We have a new problem for this team now that the Big Shaqtus is on board. We have 3 guys who don't get calls. Amare, Shaq and even Nash. Nash used to draw fouls when he'd go inside and go for a layup. He never does anymore. He always comes out of there angry after getting hacked and with no call. Now you add shaq to that... Its almost commical watching Shaq under there sometimes. It's like everyone else is playing basketball, cept shaq and the guys guarding him. Their playing football. He's tipping over, getting hit, getting pushed, wobbling around. And he just does not get many calls when he goes up for a shot. Amare is the same way. He has adopted the "Kobe yell" where everytime he goes inside he yells - "And one". I see now why Kobe does it. Their so hard to stop that they probably get fouled almost every other shot. Do we really expect the ref's to call everyone of those? That's not what basketball is anymore.

Officials today have gotten to where they try to control the game by either calling too much or too little. I've started to notice a trend to where, when a big man starts to dominate almost inevitably a charge is called against that big guy, or a 3 second call. SOMETHING to slow them down. It happens in college too. It reveals that the refs don't want any one player to dominate for too long.

Unless your Chauncy Billups at home.

I'm sure Shaq will be just fine. He has had to deal with this his entire career.

I've always been in awe of it. Yes, he gets fouled all the time, yet he almost always keeps his cool.

It's crap. He gets fouled every freaking posession and nothing is rarely called, yet when he does the same thing...foul.

The players and coaches are just as much to blame as the officials for the poor officiating. They coach guys to ride the line and even cross the line if they are not going to get caught. Players and coaches play "mind games" with the refs in order to try and get a call. Officiating has become just as much a part of the game as shooting.

I think the only solution is to develop a 0 tolerance policy for fouls. Start calling everything. After the first couple games where 5-6 guys per game foul out people will change. Of course the fans will moan and groan during the transition but it would be better for the game.

We have 3 guys who don't get calls. Amare, Shaq and even Nash.

Amare gets calls. His problem is that the officials see him as a cry baby. Amare should never speak to an official about a call again. Neither should Steve. They waste way too much time and energy on it.

It's rare that you see Nash complaining to the officials, and he still never gets any calls. So I'm not sure what your point is with this.

I do agree with you on Amare in that he should close his yap and let his game speak for himself.

This is a new deal for Shaq, I remember when he was in L.A. he could mow people over, take four steps, or swing those elbows and he would rarley get called on it. Shame it has to change when he gets here

Wrong. Try again. Please review the Lakers title runs. He was fouled on nearly every play.

Shaq is the hardest guy in the game to officiate. That also goes both ways too. Yes, he gets banged up a lot with no calls. But he also dishes out quite a few with no calls. As a earlier poster stated, they could call a foul practically every time someone like nash, kobe, amare takes it to the rack so they have to call the most flagrant and let others go.

Guys also need to stop playing to the refs and flopping so much.

I have always been amazed at shaqs composure. Good thing he doenst have a bad temper or some guys would have died over the years.

note.... just curious how many of you complaining about shaq being hacked.... were the very same complaining about his offensive fouls years past? *snicker*

You're kidding right? I think Steve taught Amare that whole open handed palm whine. Steve is constantly jabbering at the officials, it's even more apparent when you go to the games.

New deal? In LA shaq was much quicker, had more hops, and beat opponents with a COMBO of speed, agility, and muscle.

Now its mostly just muscle the last 2 years. Management knew this when they traded for him. I may overstate this....but didnt he foul out of the majority of the games he played for with the heat this year?

WOW! We never see it on our own teams do we? Nash is a major complainer. He is just smart about how he goes about it and doesnt upstage the ref, but he definetly gets in his 2 cents and if you really want to be honest and subjective.... has gotten his fair share of "lets protect the superstar" calls the last few years.

Again, the toughest player to officiate in todays game.

How about this re: Wilt Chamberlain;

nba.com said:
During his career, his dominance precipitated many rules changes. These rules changed included widening the lane, instituting offensive goaltending and revising rules governing inbounding the ball and shooting free throws (Chamberlain would leap with the ball from behind the foul line to deposit the ball in the basket).

No other player in NBA history has spawned so many myths nor created such an impact. It's difficult to imagine now, with the seemingly continuing surge of bigger skilled players, the effect of playing against Chamberlain, who was not only taller and stronger than almost anyone he matched up against but remarkably coordinated as well. A track and field star in high school and college, Chamberlain stood 7-1 and was listed at 275 pounds, though he filled out and added more muscle as his career progressed and eventually played at over 300 pounds.]

Shaq is averaging about 28 minutes per game since his LA days. He's averaging close to 4 PF a game. In LA, he averaged about 38 minutes a game and fouled just above 3 times a game. :billthecat:

uhhhhh.... he was definetly quicker and more athletic then as well. Players tend to foul more when the slow down a step or two. Happens to the best.

as another note: THe lane was actually widened twice.

In 1951-52, the lane was widened from six to 12 feet because of Mikan. Then, in 1964-65, the lane was widened from 12 to 16 feet because of Wilt.

So, offensive goaltending and the 16-foot lane can be credited to Wilt. Defensive goaltending and the first occurrence of lane widening can be attributed to Mikan.

Heh! Is that how he "shot" them his whole career?
