I have a semi-serious idea: Pooch Punting.

On EVERY 4td down, line up Warner (or Rattay or Hasselbeck) in the shotgun. Sometimes they punt, sometimes they run an offensive play. In the cases where they punt, there likely won't be anyone back to receive it. If there is, then they should be able to audible out to a pass play to take advantage of the defense playing with only 10 guys.

The more I think about this the more I like it.

So what happens when Warner kicks a five yard punt?

Then we will only be 12 yards different than when Barr punts... and still have the element of surprise by throwing the ball :)

No, Warner would fumble the punt attempt, it would pop back up and he would kick it, making it an official drop kick and it would go through the goal posts and we win...YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

I'm surprisingly on board with this idea.

Beats my earlier idea of going for it on all fourth downs...and actually would be successful a lot of the time, I'm guessing.

I like it! Warner punting the football sounds like the Cardinal version of the show Reno 911. Maybe I'll laugh instead of puke.

I really like the idea actually. It seems as though it would fit right in with the Way Whiz likes to do things too.

Bring in Danny White as a back up QB/4th down tricky punter- problem solved.

I just read the article by the Airizona paper that said Warner intentionally fumbled when he was wrapped up and was going to be taken down for a safety and hoped for the best. Makes sense as some guy from our team might have picked it up and got it out of the end zone. Was there a strong blitz on that play?

No, we bring back that guy who used to play QB for us and went on to be the punter for NE.

Sounds like a play for Paul Honung who could do it all. Run, pass, kick, throw, Heisman winner. Even played on the basketball team.

I thought he did that, too, when I saw it live. Makes sense.

Yes.

Some people have suggested that Warner should/could have thrown it away, but he wasn't outside the tackle box and it would have been called intentional grounding.

One might say, 'So, take grounding penalty'; i.e. - loss of down and half the distance to goal. However the penalty for intentional grounding while attempting to pass from the endzone is a safety!

Warner, if he intentionally did fumble, took the best option available to him at that point.

No doubt Warner is very bright and knows what he's doing. Somebody should ask him what play he would have called in that situation if it was up to him.

You can throw a ball away, without getting a grounding penalty. You throw the ball 4 yards over the receivers head. There was no safety coverage to worry about an INT.

IIRC, the Steelers used to do that with Kordell Stewart and he was pretty good at it. I think he punted from time to time at Colarado as well. Do you know if Whiz was with the team at the time. I dont think he was, but I am not sure. I was under the impression that he was with the Ravens in '96 and has been with the Steelers since. Kordell seems like a long time ago, but I just cant remember.
