It really depends on the cap situation. Tell AW that we realize his contract is below what he should be getting and we'll see what we can do AFTER restructuring Fitz, signing Karlos, Calvin, and possibly BJ. Also have to see what happens in the draft and FA. It really depends on how all that works out. If there's a way to restructure his contract to keep him here and happy, they should do it. If they can't do it this year, tell him he's a priority next year.

Its hard to answer the question becuase I dont think he has demanded anything. Considering he stated,

"That doesn't mean Wilson will be participating, however. He likely won't risk injury by taking part in those practices, he said, but his contract situation might play a part in that decision, too.

Wilson acknowledged that he probably will have to prove to Cardinals management that he is healthy before the team considers opening contract negotiations."

He is only posturing for negotiations to start during the 2008 season. Not during the offseason IMO. But if I am misreading his quotes then its all about option #1 without a question in my mind.

If Wilson ends up leaving it is same old Cardinals with another hole to REFILL. Like they dont have enough holes to fill without refilling the same ones over and over. Pay for play. He is one on the top 3 safeties. If Cards wont pay him someone else will and we will be stuck drafting another defensive back with chances being greater that he will be a Knight or a Rolle instead of another Wilson. Identify, Develop and Retain talent.

He won't leave a hole because he is still under contract until 2009. Plenty of time to sign him.......

You dont think he will remember that he didnt get a new contract when it comes time to be a free agent? That slight combined with if Cardinals had not made the post season by then I would be looking for a new team if I were in his shoes.

If AW doesnt get a new contract it is not a slight towards him in anyway.

I just saw some interesting stats in USA Today Sports Weekly. After Wilson got hurt defense went from 9 to 19. The Cardinal scheme which focused on Wilson and put pressure on QBs could no longer be ran after Wilson got hurt.

I would take it as a slight if I had a contract that paid me less than my market value, my boss refused to renegotiate and I was essential to success. I would consider it robbery.

It really is quite simple. If Wilson is the long term safety then renegotiate if not dont renegotiate. I think he is one of the KEY players. I would not renegotiate for just anyone. I really hope his contract is renegotiated.

Last year I gave up on the Cardinals ever doing anything after 30+ years of watching. How Wilson is treated is going to be huge in whether I decide again that the Cards are hopeless and spend most of my time with other things. I am so tired of good players leaving and the Cardinals continuing to lose.

If he's not happy with his contract - he should not have signed it.

He was happy with it until someone else signed for more.

C'mon !! Be like Junior Seau.

Sign a contract, play it out and then sign another one. If you're worried about what the others who play your position are getting paid - sign a shorter deal and ask for more at the end of it.

Also - didn't E. Smith have a deal in Dallas which guaranteed he would be the highest paid RB in the league? How does that work? Did they redo his deal anytime a RB got a better deal?

He SHOULD, as the poll suggests, get a new contract extension next year. That's what I believe will happen. And, again, what should happen. Maybe 5 more years added with a deal close to or the same as what Sanders got....we've got "bigger fish to fry" this off-season, so to speak....

When are we going to stop using yards rankings as the definition of how good a D is. It is the scoring ranking that counts and we have been below the top 20 from the get go. Wilson or not we were letting teams score on us often. In fact our turnover margin went up since Wilson has been gone. Our record with Wilson 4-5, without Wilson 3-3 with one game left.

I love Wilson but he is not so instrumental to this team that he deserves to get a new deal with 2 years on that deal. He will renegotiatie next year and be happy about it. If not he gets the tag and we dont have to worry about the SS position until the 2011 season. We have 3 more years of Wilson so all of this posturing is way premature. Especially considering Wilson himself isnt even demanding anything until he can show he is healthy, which wont be until the 2008 season. Then with 1 year left on his deal he will get his pay.

Also there is not a player in this league who has ever felt slighted for not having a new deal when they still have 2 years left on it. They feel slighted when they have 1 year left. Without trying to google it name more then one player who has been given a new deal when they have 2 years left on that deal that wasnt still on their rookie deal.

Lets not even mention that Wilson in the 2007 season is already the 5th highest paid Safety in the league. Went down to #6 when Troy got his new deal and is now #7 after Sanders got his new deal. Currently only Micheal Lewis and Archuleta make more then him in the NFC.

It isnt like the guy is making chump change here when compared to the other NFC Safeties. And that is how Wilson compared himself in that article so that is what I am going to base what he wants off of.

He can wait a year just like every other pro bowler does.

Also just a clarification but item #2 and #3 on the poll are the exact same thing. Giving him a few more mill a season would make him the one of the highest paid SS in the League.

I don't have a problem re-working the deal to give him top 3 money as long as it is cap friendly and allows us the ability to sign Dansby and others.

1. I don't believe he has demanded a new contract. Lets wait and see if he shows up for off season camps before we jump to conclusions..
2. We have too many other priorities before we redo Wilson's contract.
3. He is a very good safety and an important part of the team but he is not the best safety in the league.

I'm more than OK with giving him an EXTENSION AFTER next season provided he continues to perform at a high level. Right now, there are way higher priorities, one of which is to replace the free safety he wanted Rod Graves and company to sign LAST off season.

If he comes back from heel surgery and plays well in 2008, a contract extension after the season would be money well-spent IMO.
