Actually The Hulk (in the comics at least) is indeed smart enough to know what kyptonite is. In one of the big 8 comic sagas where The X-Men, Spiderman, and The Hulk (along with other Super Heros) travelled with Cycolop's father (Corsair) to another dimension to fight the Evil Minion of Nimrod, a robot sent from the future to destroy The X-men. As a reward to those that fought, they were all given gifts that tied into the super-powers, that had unexpected side-effects. Spiderman received the black "Venom" suit (which ended up being a "symbiote" with a mind of his own) and The Hulk got the ability to reason while in his Hulk form, but he also gained the "ability" to hulk-up even further. In his "Super" hulk state, he was even stupider (but MUCH bigger and stronger) than his old "one notch down" Hulk State.
As for The Hulk suffocating, that wouldn't happen either. In a "What If" comic they featured The Hulk vs. The Thing (Ben Grimm). Their fight took them into outer space, where they finished the fight on the surface of the moon. Needless to say, The Hulk killed Ben Grimm, which prompted Thor to show up and kill The Hulk when he cold-cocked him with his Hammer of Thunder (Thor and The Thing were old drinking buddies).
I would still put my money on Superman though, because he would indeed knock The Hulk into outer space, and since The Hulk isn't familiar with space travel (remember, his only foray into outer space what in a "What If" comic) he would grab him and either throw The Hulk, or fly The Hulk, into the sun.
Come to think of it, wasn't there already a Superman vs. The Hulk comic? DC and Marvel collaborated on a series of "What If" comics like that. Superman vs. the Hulk, Aquaman vs. Sub-Marniner, Batman vs. Spiderman, and Wonder Woman vs. Renz come immediately to mind...
