I used to teach with a woman who was a vegetarian. Unless it was bacon. She said she couldn't give bacon up because "bacon is meat candy".

This raises an interesting question.

How does one define vegan or vegetarian? Can you be 95% vegetarian?

Are you vegan if you wear leather? What if you don't eat or wear animal products, but you read books with glue that comes from animal products?

It's quite interesting, but unfortunately leads to people accusing others of being "impure" for certain reasons. It really shouldn't be a contest. :(

I respect that.

FWIW, I stopped drinking soda a long time ago as well. Not so much a conscious decision, I just don't like sugar and carbonation.

I am addicted to flavored bottled water, tho.

It was kind of random for me. We were out on New Year's Eve at Subway and I thought I'd see how long I could go without it. Once I start a streak, I want to keep going. The only thing I kinda miss is the frozen Coke at Burger King. Those were good.

One of my ex-wives was a vegan so that's what I had to eat. One day I just couldn't take it anymore and I stopped at Bert's Burger Bowl in Santa Fe and drowned my sorrows with a double meat, cheese, bacon, green chile burger. I also got a pint of deep fried chicken livers to go and ate them in my truck.

Am I going to hell??

.

Yes, but only because you made us think of deep fried chicken livers. :barf:

Got any good recs for a habitual meat-eater that may want to dabble with the occasional meat-free meal?

Certainly! There are a lot of good transition foods available now that I really like. My favorites are from Beyond Meat and Hampton Creek.

The "chicken" strips take just like the real thing (honestly) and are healthier. They are available at Whole Foods. Just Mayo is better than any mayo I've had and is now widely available at Target, dollar stores, and Costco where you can get a huge jar for less than $5. Just these two together make a great meal.

Of course, if you're interested in a particular type of meal or have a question about how to substitute, I'm happy to advise. :)

World needs more vegans, if the demand for organic beef continues to rise I'm screwed.

Our food production system is simply not sustainable. The sheer amount of resources that go into producing meat is staggering and as countries like China develop, the demand for meat is expanding even more.

When you consider the whole process of meat production, it's quite scary. The amount of emissions that cows produce, the amount of waste that is spread back into the world (and concentrated in massive lagoons), and the amount of antibiotic use in factory farms (80% of antibiotics in this country go into factory farms and then it is only for sub-therapeutic or non-therapeutic use, meaning that there is a big risk of creating antibiotic resistant disease) are all very important issues that we don't discuss much as a society.

Yamon, and your right on too. I kicks it with hippies that won't let me bring meat in their houses, or cook "death" in their pots. They scare the crap out of me all the time.

Are your cats Vegan?

Excellent question!

They are not. They are indoor cats (which you'll appreciate, I'm sure), but before they were rescued, they caught their own food outside. They are predators in the wild and not farmers, so I feed them high-quality foods (and that means, in part, not sourced from China) that do contain meat and fish. [The idea of farmer cats amuses me.]

Interestingly, though, there are a lot of vegan dogs who absolutely thrive on that diet.

If man were meant to be vegan, brocolli would be more fun to hunt.

Bacon is meat candy.

I heard the left is going to start a new campaign declaring brocolli an endangered species so the right will start hunting it and feeding it to thier children. :D

Totally agree!

I am a vegetarian (no fish, chicken, beef) and have been for, wow, 24 years. Same reason as you.

So, here are my questions:

1. What are your favorite restaurants?
2. Have you found any suitable substitute for tuna?
3. What is your favorite grocery store? Do you have any recommendations other than Whole Foods. (I find them pricey.)

That is all .... for now. :)

Good. And great on the indoor part.

Cats are carnivores, dogs are omnivores. Cats need meat to thrive and live. Dogs do not need meat (but like it).

Ever been to Fresh Mint (Scottsdale)? It is right by my house, but I avoid it because I wouldn't know what to order.

1. Hmm, I don't get out much. LOL. But I like Green, Fresh Mint, Pomegranate Cafe, True Food, Loving Hut, and Pita Jungle. I usually just use my VegOut app or happycow.net to find a place, though.
2. I thought tuna was gross when I was growing up, so I've never sought a substitute for it. I'll keep an ear out for ideas, though.
3. Sprouts has a pretty decent selection, but Whole Foods is the only place that carries some of the cool new stuff right now. I actually get a lot of stuff from Costco now, including protein powder, mayo, veggie burgers, dark chocolate, etc. I order fresh vegetables (veganically grown) from Sunizona Farms, which might be expensive, but I'm too lazy to compare prices. LOL.

Please add more thoughts or questions as you think of them. This is fun. :)

I still remember the first time I saw someone toss her beagle half of a carrot and he caught it and chewed it up. I thought it was hilarious because I'd never seen that before.
