So you'd take Dave McGinnis or Larry Marmie :D .

To me, there are two candidates,Russ Grimm and Ron Rivera. Every time they have gone for a "name" coach it hasn't worked. Bring in a HC ready assistant from a winning team and a guy who has an attitude about them.

How come? I think there are some good names on that list and you listed pretty much everyone available.

How is Ron Rivera "HC ready"? How do you know that Lovie Smith doesn't run that defense? Without a strong GM like they have in Chicago with Jerry Angelo, do you really trust Rivera to keep building the roster? Rivera runs the best defense in the NFL, but it's also without question the most talented.

artp - your list is okay, I guess, but you don't really explain why. Turner and Fassel I understand, but why not Heimerdinger? Why not Ferentz?

I know Vermeil is old, but he's the ideal candidate for the Cardinals. He has 3 times taken lousy teams (Phila, StL, KC) & in EVERY situation, he turned those teams into dominant ones. With the talent we have on O, Vermeil would turn this franchise around quickly. We don't need a guy to be around for 10 yrs, just long enough to change the culture. Have him bring in a young, creative O-Coordinator that can follow in his footsteps in 3-4 years. This franchise needs help NOW. Vermeil's the guy. He'll bring discipline & attitude, something sorely missing in the desert.

How do you really know if any asst. is HC ready? The guy knows winning and has had good reports on him being HC material. Just because a guy hasn't been an asst. for 15 years doesn't mean he won't be a good HC. I agree that a strong GM is also a key.

That's a great way to think about it but realistically, after 2 years of coaching the Cardinals he'll break down in a post-game press conference and he'll retire right there. I expect the Cards to destroy any man who takes over this team.

Vermeil will not return to coaching. Pittsburgh is Bill Cowher's team. I don't his assistant coaches are ready to HC (remember Mike Mullarkey). I don't think Frerentz has shown anything to warrant NFL HC job. I really don't know who I want. I am just scared the Cardinals will fall back into the Ryan-Tobin-McGinnis carousel.
I also don't want Pete Carroll.

You can't make a judgement on one guy,Mularkey, who really didn't have much of an oppurtunity. Look at Andy Reid and JOn Gruden. They were under Holmgrem and i'm pretty sure he ran the offense in GB. You have to go by the individual. None of us know whther Rivera, Grimm, or any othe asst. coach will be a successful HC.All you can do is go by the reports and those guys seem to be highly reccomended.Their sides of the ball play hard and at a high level. Success breeds success. That's why having a GM who knows what he's doing is the key to getting a good HC.

What about someone "like" Rich Rodriguez???? A solid coach on the college level that has been a winner at every step. Runs a strong and clean program. Knows how to win, without always getting the cream of the crop talent. I think we could do a lot worse.

I'm not necessarily saying Rich should be the guy, but someone like him.
