Green goes by the "draft the best player" route regardless of need, or so we have seen. Something tells me that on his player chart he has these two CBs ranked in his top five and that is one of the reasons he has not addressed the CB situation in free-agency. He knows one of them should be available at eight and he has them ranked high above other positions in talent. Just a thought that when he does it he will be drafting by both methods, best player and need.

Who's Davis? The only Davis I can think of is Thomas Davis FS out of Georgia and there is no way we take a FS with the nuber 8 pick.

Unless something VERY unusual happens , the CArds are going to take a cb in the first round.

Look at any draft publication or news article at player rankings and it becomes clear. A cb like Rolle, Jones or Rodgers would give us a potential cover corner. In free agency , cb's like that are costing teams 25 to 30 mil to sign.
We can wait on a rb until the second round. There is no such thing as a sure pick when it comes to running back and we don't need a guy that can "do it all". We need a guy that can fit our system and there will be several rb's to choose from when we are on the clock in the second round.

Guys like Arrington, Morency, Fason, Reyes are all guys that, along with Hambrick(or Shipp) would give us a 1-2 punch like the Falcons (Dunn and Duckett).

I still think the Cards should go cb, rb , cb in the first 3 rounds. In addition to that, I would love to see us grab Darrin Sproles.

A draft like this could shore up our 2 wakest spots and add some depth to those positions.

And that something is...?

Anyone who says "they know" doesn't know unless they're Dennis, Rod or another Cardinal insider. I'd kind of doubt that (a) Dennis and Rod even know yet what their final board will look like nor (b) would they let this info get within a million miles of the media, fans or other teams.

Denny's draft board is based on the information he and Graves get from "The Big Red Sheet". :D

DBs in the draft

I think the Cards are painting themselves into a "draft for need" instead of "best player available" unless they get at least one CB in free agency. Even if we resign Hill we "need" to go CB with #1 or #2, and draft another for nickle/dime later.

That approach sucks and takes away from Green's strengths/philosophy. If we get a guy like Dyson/Law/Surtain everything opens up draft wise. How much is THAT worth $$$ and playoff-wise?

My controversial opinion

Straight up, the new rules in the league strongly diminish the value of an outstanding cornerback. They make the pass rush and secondary more valuable. We have addressed those needs very well. I honestly think Green will be very happy with Hill and Macklin at CB and _maybe_ a CB in round 2... but drafting 2 CBs in the draft. I do not think we will take one in the first round as i don't think any CB in the draft is worth a top 10 pick with the new cover rules. From what I have read and observed, I'd guess our draft board is totally Best Player Available. I think you're looknig at the 3 RBs, Derrick Johnson, and possibly the top OT and TE. Rolle might be on that list, but I can't imagine he's #1 or #2 on that list.

I think its also possible that he sees one of the two WRs as top material, which is part of why he's looking to trade Boldin. If he does trade Boldin I'm going to cry though, as I bought the stupid jersey last year. That, however, is another thread(s).

Actually the best players in this years draft are CBs and RBs. This also happens to be the Cards need. But if someone drops to round two that the Cards feel is ranked high on their board; Denny will pull the trigger and take him regarless of need.

When drafting 8th , you can only hope for the 8th best player on you board. Rolle may not be #1 or #2 on ANYBODYS list, however , if he is our 4th highest player and is available when we pick at #8, then we will be taking the BPA "in our opinion".
I highly doubt that our final draft board will have Brown, Williams, and Benson listed as 1,2,3 just because we need a rb.
I think it might be more like Brown, and Williams, 1,2, Rolle and Pacman, 3,4, Benson and Johnson, 5,6, Smith and Rodgers,7,8. Please note this is a hypothetical list.
So, hypothetically, when we pick, the highest player available is the guy we will take.
I think that guy will be a cb.

. What a horrifying thought.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Dennis rated Dockett and Dansby higher than I had them rated. Then again, when I put together my board, I "cheat" - my board places some weight on what I think the team needs and then combines this with pure athletic talent (i.e. "Best Player Available Within Context of Team Needs)

I also think back to that Underwood 1st round pick Dennis made several years back. I don't even think I had him rated.

Denny's worse pick ever. Nick Saban was the head coach of Michigan State and kicked him off the team in his senior year. None of the Viking personnel guys asked Saban about Underwood. I think Denny learned from that!!

The way CBs have been getting paid, it looks like most in the NFL don't agree with you.

I absolutely agree with you here. I didn't mean to imply he would rate the top 3 RBs as 1-2-3. I don't have them that way in my BPA. I was trying to say all three would probably end up in the top 8 though and I'm not sure that a CB will end up in my top 8 when I finish doing my research. I just don't like the CB position right now with the cover rules as they stand.

Yes, but does Denny?

We haven't signed a Free agent CB. If we pass on one in round 1, I think it will be clear Denny does agree with me. In fact, I think the Cardinals are in really great shape because they don't have HUGE contracts tied into CBs.

You need a top free safety and an amazing pass rush. Fortunately, our pass rush is looking very scary right now.

The best player available concept is discussed in the comments section of an article here. The article is about the NFC West so it's a good read regardless but in the comment section someone compares the last four drafts of the division and we are spanking the other three teams over that period. He also goes on to compare who each team would have drafted if they had gone pure best player available to illustrate how it builds a better team over time than drafting by need. Interesting to see how amazing your drafts would be if you just took best player all the time and never considered immediate need.

Wow-- the link above is required reading for all draftniks-- particulalry the follow up comments below the article

Interesting and refreshing to read unbiased, rational analysis from someone -- stuff that looks beyond the standard -- "everything the **insert name of current NFL media darling team here** do is good" --

Best stuff I've read in a long time. Who is this "sean" guy? He knows our drafts inside and out. I wish he'd post here.

I think Denny & the brass likes Rolle and Cadilac. Because of need they need to go CB - true. The first round pick is a need pick, but not really a reach pick. If Rolle isn't there I'd like to see us trade out. But not too far down. There will be offers there.

2nd round I like the Guards - but again we have a BIG need pick there - RB.
I'd like them to move Shelton already for another 2-3rd and/or a RB! So we can get one of - Elton Brown or David Baas.
