Versus Chattanooga. The same Chattanooga that let DeAndre Presley of App. St throw for 340 yards. I think Newton can be good but he is not worth a 1st round pick.

He is lighting up Chattanooga, so now he has thrown more than rushed against stellar defenses like Louisiana-Monroe, Ole Miss, Miss State and Chattanooga.

The guy isn't a first round pick, that doesn't mean he isn't draftable. You just can't afford to draft a QB who is a project in round 1, too big of a gamble--unless you are a team with multiple 1st round picks and are pretty solid everywhere else.

Let me know when he makes an NFL type throw or an NFL type read. Or when he looks at more than 1 of his receivers on any given play.

I bet you praised the Raiders drafting of JaMarcus Russell too. He's too raw, young & unproven to risk a early pick. I still say he he busts or has 5+ years to prove anything in the NFL.

I wonder if the early success of Josh Freeman will tempt more teams into investing third-rounders in these Terrelle Pryor, Cam Newton types.

Speaking of Freeman, the Bucs set a precedent for the Cards drafting another "project" QB early. In 2008 they drafted Josh Johnson, a physically promising but raw prospect out of San Diego State, in the 5th round. After Gruden got fired they came in with a new regime and invested a 1st round pick (17th overall) in a physically interesting but underdeveloped Josh Freeman. After a veteran placeholder quickly failed (Byron Leftwich), Johnson was given a handful of starts to show what he had. Then Freeman was allowed to develop over the remaining 8 games.

Could we see a washed-up placeholder QB (Donovan McNabb) replaced by a physically gifted 5th round pick (John Skelton) replaced by an underprepared mid-first round pick (Cam Newton/Terrelle Pryor/Ryan Mallett)? Stay tuned for 2011.

Josh Freeman was a pocket passer in a pro system surrounded by mediocre talent. There's Josh Freeman raw than there's Cam Newton raw, I think if you want a raw project, you go with Jake Locker. He has only played about 20 games as pro style QB and the potential is sky high with the elite intangibles and leadership to succeed though we drafted John Skelton to be the project so I dunno. ;).

He isn't a first round QB. He is an athlete who is a project. He isn't the same class as Vince Young or Vick when it comes to throwin the ball.

Like a certain first rounder by the name of Tebow?

This kid will go in the first. I;d hope we'd get a shot.

I wouldn't mind Newton, I'd imagine him being one of the better QBs around by the time we pick.
I would like to move up in the draft/talent but I don't see it going down like that.

I'd be very surpised for the Cards to take a QB in round 1 unless it's Luck and they'll never get a shot at him. I think they'll go with aveteran QB and are going to see what they have in Skelton before commtiing money to a 1st round QB. Heck, throwing the ball, Skelton blows Newton out of the water. Neither can likley read a defense. The only think Newton has is his running ability and I don't see the Cards going to the spread option anytime soon.

More smoke coming out. May be sparking a fire soon.

He is coming out for sure, in fact I wonder if he will be declared ineligible if any of this stuff sticks. Additionally, this kid is not too bright if he really got caught cheating several times. Does he really have the brains to learn and lead a pro offense?? Buyer beware! There are lots of red flags here for sure.

Too bad we probably won't be high enough on the draft board to get him. He'll be going to Buffalo, which come to think of it, may influence him to stay in school.

There is this guy named Andrew Luck, who won't get past the team with the first pick.

Personally I don't like him much as a 1st rounder, I'm not sold on him in the first. He reminds me of a hybrid of Derek Anderson with his throws in the dirt and strong arm and Jake Plummer with his improv passes with back hand throws and left hand tosses. I'll give him one thing though...his decision making is pretty quick and seems to make pretty decent decisions as to where he's going with the ball.

Okay...I'll give him a couple more positives.

He seems to plant his feet well and have a naturally smooth throwing motion.

Has a pretty good command as to when to put some zip on the ball and when to put some air under it.

Actually goes through his progressions pretty good...BUT...seems to get a little panicky when he's hurried and can make some pretty poor rush decisions.

I might consider him in the second or third if he lasts. Of course it depends quite heavily on what transpires through the rest of the season and the offseason.

I think throwing DA's name in there is misleading, because Foles is one of the more accurate passers in college football. A lot of this comes from WR screens and bubble screens that more or less sub for the run game in Arizona's offensive scheme, which is basically a copy cat of the Texas Tech Air Raid scheme.

Foles deep ball improved drastically from this season to last season. He DOES make some dumb decisions when he is hurried, usually tries to force something to happen which sometimes ends up in a fumble. Doesnt force his passes downfield though like some people we know.

I think he needs another year in college, he definitely is not ready to be an nfl starter right now. Give him a year, if his improvement continues he will be an easy 1st/2nd rounder.

WE have two projects that will have a year of learning the sytem in. Using a 1st for another QB gamble is not in the Cards! We will find our guy in the free agents market to keep Larry.

Max hasn't learned anything and may never, I hope he does.
Skelton hasn't played a down in our system. Greener than the hippies I hang out with.
Those are "our projects" and along with our BEAST of a starter in DA....
We NEED to shop the draft for QB.
We NEED to shop free agency for QB.
We NEED to shop the USFL for QB.
We NEED to look every where homie, not limit our selves on what we will give to get a GOOD QB.We are desperate at this position. We are not developing jack right now. Doesn't have to be Newton, just some one who can play.

Nothing earth shattering but Terrelle Pryor has said he will return to OSU next year. He needs to. Too bad he can't throw it better because his athletic ability and mental makeup are both top notch.

Reading about the $ scandal has me thinking so. I recall him being undecided about staying in college, but with this going on, some ones going to draft him. Any body who wanted Vick should be all over this kid. (play style is pretty similar)

He may not have a choice...

Living in an SEC state our radio talk shows are all about Newton each and every day. No matter what happens he will finish the season with Auburn as the NCAA investigation normally takes months. The consensus seems to be that Newton may go in the second round and not the first pick in the first round. questions remains about his passing ability. If he is not the best QB in the SEC then I can say clearly Ryan Mallet is. All the former pros who broadcast our TV games of Arkansas say he has the best arm they have seen with a perfect over the top passing motion and at 6'7" can see clearly with rushers in front of his face. His stats are remarkable. He is a pure pocket passer and I think leads the nation with completions over 20-25 yards. He seems this year to have got his arm strength under control so that he is not throwing bullets on every pass. Throws lots of TDs.
I saw a chart on TV comparing Mallet with all the great NFL QBs out of the SEC at this point in their careers. He had them all beat. He may not win the Heisman but I bet he will be there watching and a finalist. Our last big game is against a tough LSU team that just beat then #1 Alabama. The game will be on national TV at LSU. I think Mallets performance in this game will have a lot to do with his race for the Heisman. I sure would like to have him on the Cards team. Of course I am biased but he is what he is and his numbers show it. You can be sure the pro scouts will be there as both LSU and Arkansas have other NFL prospects. Earlier I had posted that I thought Newton was the best QB in the conference. He is in college as his running is legendary but in the pros he will be expected to be a passer first. Mallet fits that requirement better than Newton. Newton might be better as a runner in the NFL. The guy can flat out run the ball and has the moves of a 200 lb tailback. Will be interesting to see where Newton is drafted and what the Pros think.

Cam Newton

So I was interested in seeing the response from the board about Cam Newton. For the last 6 weeks, I have eyed Newton as a potential Franchise QB for our team. Face it in April we will be in the market for that QB, and given our schedule, Luck and most likely Locker will not be on the board in all likelyhood we we may pick..

I go back and forth on Ryan Mallett, some days I see him and he looks like a leader, a good kid with a good head, smart and a good arm, and some days he looks like an unathletic ******** monkey...

Cam Newton is the most intriguing (lowest bottom highest ceiling) prospect that I can remember. At first it looked like there was little chance he would even declare. Now after all these allegations, it looks more and more likely that he will be draft bound come January.

If we draft Cam Newton, would you guys be on board? One thing you CAN say for the guy, he is a WINNER. He is an athletic freak, with a cannon of an arm and solid throwing mechanics. But all these allegations and the new cheating allegations at Florida, are those enough to take him off our draft board completely, or is it smething we chalk up to being an immature 18 year old kid..

And further, do you even like him as a pro prospect, or is he a great College QB who will not transfer to the NFL and thus does not make him a first round pick..

Thoughts?
