IBM or Apple?

The wife and I are getting a new computer, the one we're on now is ancient. She wants an Apple, has heard they're less susceptible to viruses, easier to use, etc... I have no clue. Anybody have an opinion either way?

We use the computer only for word processing, internet, etc... No games, if that makes a difference. I'd like to work more efficiently at home, and the program by which I would access the system at my office would make this old slow computer we've got even slower.

I know my next computer will be a mac.

I also heard that if yer into working with "heavy duty" graphics - go with a mac. You also have a point that few people are writing viruses to attack Macs....which in itself is a positive thing.

Of course there are PC supporters like assface who believes calling Tech support is a form of telephone dating.

If you're going to use it for work (business related) of any kind, you'll need a PC (or IBM as you call it!)

99.99% of business use that platform. Unless you work in advertising/ graphics in which case most use MaC's.

You're going to spend twice as much on an Apple than a PC.

Apple is built on the Unix kernel with a GUI interface.... so why not use that same philosophy and just purchase a Linux machine which would cost you like $300.00 and release yourself from having to deal with corporate juggernauts such as Apple and Microsoft

I used Macs during school. If you want to run PC stuff, you can get virtual PC for it. Everything works together with a mac and it works great for home video/music things as well.

If you get a new Intel Mac you don't need virtual PC.
You can dual boot windows XP SP2.
Of course you have to have your own copy and install it yourself.

The worst thing about a Mac is that I don't have any friends with tons of Mac software that I can copy for free.

I used it a lot for a program called Garage Band that was pretty cool to use to make some songs, and it was very easy to edit with everything being drag and drop.

Macs rule - I have a 20in. flat panel iMac and a brand spanking new MacBook

Since Mac now also runs Windows programs there is no reason to buy a PC

Go with a Mac and never look back

Like DeAnna and others have stated, the major difference is price. You can get a PC that is twice as strong as a MAC for the same price.

I do technical support and have 7 computers in my cube, including with 3 macs. You technically are not supposed to do any repairs or upgrades to Mac's on your own either. You are supposed to take it to an authorized MAC repair specialist. Depending on how technically savvy you are, that alone might be a good reason to buy a PC.

I recommend a PC - my roomates had macs in college and I grew to hate them - even with the "PC Compatability" - it was a pain the butt

my wife uses a mac at work (teacher) and they just aren't better for the majority of the population

if you are doing graphics/video work then they are a nice advantage - in my experience, i'd be in the middle of doing work and the computer would just lock up on me - constantly - seemed the only thing it could do consistently well was freeze and crash

You'll also have twice as many problems. There's no such thing as a PC that's twice as strong as a Mac. A dual 1.25 Ghz Mac G4 is just as powerful as a 2.5 Ghz PC. G5s are comparable to high-end PCs now, especially the dual-processor machines.

The only thing I have ever had trouble finding was some drivers for a wireless NIC card. I eventually got them with the new kernel release

Now that Macs use Intel processors there won't really be any difference in this department. It's not like Intel is only selling their fast processors to Apple.

I'm not against PCs at all, I have 3 at home. But I get tired of people insulting Macs (in general) like they're some horrible machine, when in fact, they are far from that.

Never said that they were horrible, (although I know you weren't talking about me specifically) I have 3 at my desk alone. There are still quite a few programs that will not run on a mac, and not all of the Windows clones work well on Macs.

If money were no object, I would say that it would be close. For the money, especially laptops, IBM's are much better.

Very interested in checking out the new G5s with the Intel processor. I'll find out next year when I finally buy one.

Apple for sure. Just made the switch and I will never go back. Why so many people are fond of PC's is beyond me.
