teams generally play their starters through the first series in the second half in game three.....seeing who gets most of the RB touches should tell a lot about who the team sees as the go to guy for the season.
but with CJ being day to day I would guess he will see some carries either way,...just to test his knowledge of the playbook if nothing else.

Are people really assuming that ellington isnt our #1 back already?

cant speak for people.. but I assume....that drafting a larger version of the same player shows the staff has recognized AE cannot stay healthy when asked to carry the load or run between the tackles. my guess is we will see some 2 back sets with AE motioning in to a slot position as a wr.... but I would bet money he will not lead the team in total "carries" this season..."touches" perhaps,,...but not carries.

IMO they were just drafting another player that fit the skillset. Andre will remain the starter for now and if someone is better, they will supplant him but that is a tall order to fill.

BA said he is fine running the rock but needs to work on pass protection.

Above per Doug and Wolf this morning.

It'll be tempting to make him the starter because he's so flexible. He could be running between the tackles, outside the tackles, catching a pass. The defense has to honor all options. BA is really big on that. With Ellington, you don't have to honor between the tackles, which in the end may make Ellington more attractive to BA as a complementary role. Maybe.

I'm excited to see what DJ can add to this team. He has a very good skill set.

How is it such a large order to fill? Ellington is, by far, the most overrated (solely by our fans) Cardinal of my lifetime. He's a 6th round pick who has spent as much time hurt as healthy, has Career highs of 600 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns in a season and has a career average of 4ypc lol. He will likely finish 3rd in carries this year, as DJ and CJ are both bigger, faster, stronger and more durable.

For all the crap Beanie gets on here, he was better, while playing through real injuries and with a significantly lesser supporting cast.

Until and IF Ellington ever produces better numbers on a more consistent basis, it's hard to argue your point...

In year one, he had the best yards per carry in the League, and with a bad paw that kept him out of practice he soldiered valiantly last season. This with a less than stellar O-line in the run game.

Can't understand the complaints.

I didn't complain. Just stating that he hasn't put up Beanie type numbers - yet.

You can't win this debate. No matter how you spin it, 1,300 yards and 6 rushing touchdowns over two seasons for a starting running back isn't anywhere near good. Also, "soldiered valiantly" and his consistant going down at first contact when he can't run out of bounds untouched are two entirely different things. Beanie ran for 1,000 yards and ten touchdowns behind a putrid line, with no qb/threat by air and with a blown out knee and he's made out to be the worst rb in team history. Double standard much?

He's a running back. Put up his rushing numbers. Also, Ellington plays with Palmer and Veldheer. Beanie played with Levi and Kolb/D-Wreck/Lindley.

whoah..at least he has contributed well and has played with injuries with a seriously afflicted QB situation last year. It,s still very early in his career. He,s also much, much better than Bennie ever dreamed about catching the football, huge in todays NFL.

FWIW, I think AE's upside is greater than Beanie's... Ellington just needs to prove it. IMO, it speaks volumes about how the coaches feel about Ellington when they brought in CJ...

I'm not saying he should be cut. I just think it's ridiculous that everyone on here seems to think he's some superstar beyond reproach. David Johnson or CJ2k will be starting soon enough IMO.

Yards from scrimmage:

BW: 2009 = 936
BW: 2010 = 471
BW: 2011 = 1099
BW: 2012 = 258

AE: 2013 = 1023
AE: 2014 = 1055

if your gonna trot out total yards from scrimmage by a RB........ would make more sense to compare Juke to Reggie Bush....

I agree...I like AE...but he is not strong enough to take the hits and not fast enough to outrun the injuries.........he is a scat back....nothing more and nothing less.

if he could be a healthy Reggie Bush in his prime, I'll take it.

I do agree that he's not an every down back, but he doesn't need to be with this stable of running backs which is as deep as any in the league and the best this team has seen since the Stump/Ferrel days.

I agree. He's been the best all around back we've had in sometime. He led the league in ypc his rookie year & all of a sudden he's overrated. Some people will complain because their ice cream is too cold.

I also don't get the injury prone comments. He's been injured once in his 2 year career. Once & played through most of it.

Mendenhall was the starter his first year in the league. He's started exactly one year & played the year with a bad foot.
