Tango I agree to some extent with what you say but the posters on the dark side are kicking our arse right now and sometimes it's just better to lay low rather than fight the overwhelming tidal wave.

They have a right to be mad I am too but I still believe things have changed although I am willing to bet things have not gone according to Graves plan at all.

I think he has been spanked hard with some real GM lessons and if he's smart he will learn. I just hope his whole philosophy hasn't just gotten shattered at the same time.

What I am afraid of is that his "not over spending perfectly fit for Bidwill mentality" just got taken out back of the wood shed.
Leaving him in a certain rather unpleasant creek without an adequate means of locomotion.

Tango if this all boils down to people thinking they could get around the upfront money thing we are not just screwed this year my worst fears are true there isn't money for upfront bonuses in any signifigant amount and no relief is likely without consecutive drafts of the century.

conrad, despite the fact that you reside in the light (though i don't know where the hell you're able to find it), i truly appreciated your last post. it's the most realistic thing i've seen come from one of the koolaid clan.

No problem I really am able to adapt with whatever information I can get.

I was just preaching patience before because losing Boston and Jake wasn't in itself all that bad as far as I was concerned but a disturbing pattern is now taking hold and I honestly don't feel Graves was prepared for it.

This means he has wrongly evaluated his current situation and that isn't something I can feel good about.

I blame him for not knowing whats up thats his job. He was all out there on Colvin thinking he had a real good shot he was not correct in that which is a bad sign of things to come.

I still give him credit for changing things and he can recover but he is not so sure of himself right now I would think.

I don't think he will admit this and I don't believe he should cause too many will just pound him for it but he better start thinking on the fly cause things are now hitting critical.

The reactor is melting down and the fail safe switch just broke off in his hand.

Mac - He is probably in shock. Personnel-wise, he probably figured he put a pretty good offense on the field last year. The line was decent. Shipp elevated the running game. Jones, though not what everyone hoped for, was still an improvement at tight end. The wide receiver group was talented, but sadly injuries decimated it. Plummer seemed to play as if the end were near. So the offense appeared to be a reliable quarterback away from being at least adequate.

The defense had good linebackers and decent safeties. Starks was inconsistant at the corner, but had to constantly defend doubles moves because of the absence of a pass rush. At least two defensive linemen and one more corner looked necessary to have a competitive defense.

Now Mac has no QB, no receivers, no center, weakened linebackers and is down a starting safety. So much for his plan of fixing one side of the ball.

Graves - He started well by extending Shipp and finally got the Tanner deal done. After that he's been either incredibly naive or he just doesn't understand the job. The offer to Plummer was pointless. He failed to tag Boston. He is chasing the closest thing to Plummer on the open market when several solid short-term starters are available. Even Cincy has done a better job of signing key players. Where is he going to get a number one receiver? Where will he get a pass rusher? How many holes can he fill in the draft?

Baby Bidwill - I'll believe he makes a difference when he makes a difference. Would back to back winning seasons be too much to ask? Would getting a draft pick for your top player be too high an expectation? When does the parade out of town stop? When do we ask, "What would it take to sign you before you get up from this table?" Can anyone here negotiate?

I guess this means I'm pessimistic. Except that to me this seems realistic. Where's the proof anything is improving? Does anyone seriously believe the current roster is nearly as good as the one that only won 5 games last season? How has this team improved? I will get optimistic when I see something to be optimistic about and I haven't seen it yet.

harry: If we sign blake we will have improved at qb. if we sign kordell - probably not. if we sign holliday we will have filled one of 2 holes we had on d line. jackson is tsill out there (probably not) - he would upgrade safety position. So..we have to date only subtracted..we could upgrade 3 positions quickly by these 3 signings..still have a long way to go.

Good points, Harry.

What concerns me is the PASSIVE approach everyone involved in this current administration is taking. Mac has a golden tongue and he seems sincere, but his game strategies are far too passive for my liking...and that goes for all aspects of the team.

The offense has been tediously predictable and never seems to go into a game with a clear-cut plan as to how to keep the defense off-balance and , better yet, how to attack the defense's weaknesses. Case in point: The 49ers are weak in the middle and quick on the perimeter, yet the Cardinals ran more toss sweeps in the first half than power isolations through the A and B gaps. Jerry Sullivan will turn the page on this trend, thank goodness. He will prepare.

The defense is about as passive as any NFL defense I have watched in the last decade. The read and react philosophy has the players playing on their heels, to the point where the DTs resort to running backside pursuit angles five to seven yards on their side of the l.o.s. play after play. There's no concerted effort to achieve any line penetration...and simple concepts such as contain are often-times either ignored or abandoned.

The special teams...well, when was the last time the Cardinals blocked a punt or a kick? 'Nuff said.

This off-season reflects similar passivity and lack of preparation. The front office should have had a concerted, clear-cut plan right from the get-go. Targeted free agents should have been wooed by the organization's most persuasive and charismatic salesman, Dave McGinnis. Contracts should have been waiting on the table...and every effort should have been made to make sure the free agents the team wants don't leave town without the team's best effort to sign them...right on the spot. Every good car salesman knows, you don't let the prospective customer leave without getting the deal done. How many times have you heard from a car salesman that if you walk out of the dealership today without buying the car, you won't get the same "great" offer tomorrow. The same should apply to free agents...wow them with a great offer and tell them that if they don't accept it today, it will be offered to another player. Case in point: Dexter Jackson. Is Jackson a better safety than Kwamie Lassiter? IMO, there's no comparision due to Jackson's superior range as a centerfielder, in addition to his playmaking instincts. Yet, the team offers Jackson a contract (48 hours after he leaves Arizona, no less) for LESS ($2.4M/year) than what it paid Kwamie ($3M+) last year. The team should have said to Jackson, "We paid one of our safeties franchise money last year and we are prepared to give that to you or another safety we have our eyes on. The first safety to accept our offer, gets the $3M." IMO, Jackson would have signed such a contract the first Saturday in free agency. Instead the Cardinals dilly daddle, take several days to get him to come for an interview and then offer him $2.4M (two days later), to try to save 600K. The $2.4M keeps other teams like the Steelers still in the ballgame. The $3M would have blown them out of the picture. Jackson's not stupid. He knows the Cardinals paid Lassiter $3M, which is why he is in Arizona in the first place...when Arizona offers him $2.4, it means to him that they are trying to get him cheap...which playoff contenders like the Steelers might be able to get away with, but not the Cardinals...not at this point.

And now Jeff Blake...comes in and says he's up for the challenge...that his focus will be on ensuring that the Cardinals' offense will become one of the top five offenses in the NFL...that it's all about team and commitment...and he, of course, has to leave town without a contract offer because RG says he has to consult the coaching staff to see how Blake fits in...RIDICULOUS. Sorry to say, but the preparation HAS to be done before you bring a player in, not after. The team either wants him or not....BEFORE he comes to interview. That's preparation...and that's being aggressive. This passive, ultra-conservative approach to free agency is getting the Cardinals exactly what they deserve...egg in the face.

Walter,

You wouldn't happen to have $400 million lying around and a burning desire to own an Arizona football team would you?

VERY WELL SAID!

Well, we still missed out on the real prize, that being Colvin. But to say the least, these are 3 terrific signings.

I tried to post a thread...

last night but couldn't get it to log...so here goes. While you are patting yourself on the back and eating Ice Cream...remember Tango....the NFL is a league that is experiencing Parity with most teams moving to the middle with a few elite teams that can expect to be in the playoffs and go to the Super Bowl...we are not quite in the middle yet. These signings are an upgrade over where we were..no question...but change for change sake...not exactly something to pat yourself on the back for. And you blast us...what did you call it...naysayers...for wanting and demanding more of this team? Why should we be labeled by you an obvious "stick with what ain't working guy". We demanded more from the Team...you took the wait and see route. We still say give us a Hugh Douglas ...give us Vonnie Holliday...we have signed middle teir FA...I am grateful...at least there isn't a revolt...but hardly the kind of improvement that gets us to the SuperBowl...maybe 7-9....I think I would wait to make us eat crow ...once the Cards have really improved there team...with top FA...and solid Draft picks...not on improved guys..not on the next guy available. WE still need alot of work....so don't break your arm............ ........I know this is the kind of response you live for....:p

Excellent post Rats. Only Blake and in some situations Hodgins are impact players. We have moved up, but not as far as all the excitement would lead you to believe.

I'm glad this thread jumped up to the top of the pile. Hindsight is 20-20, but re-reading the various comments after the four FA signings was almost as entertaining as the signings themselves.

Hint to the Dark Siders - Enough with the "yeah, buts." I'm not crazy about everyone we signed (ironically the guy I'm most concerned about isn't included in your list of "impact" players).

But all four moves will improve this football team.

- We have a QB who IMHO is as good or better than the one we had.

- We have our first decent lead blocker since Ron Wolfley

- KLass is grass and we have 2 good young safeties.

- By adding one guy, we've improved depth at MLB and OLB plus helped ourselves on special teams.

Opposite that:

- We lost a very talented WR who didn't play much last year, and when he did, he performed more like a very good (rather than a great) pass catcher.

There's still a lot more to be done, but think where we were 24 hours ago. At that time the Talent Drain Score was Defectors: 2 Cards: 0. Now it's Cards: 4 Defectors: 2.

At least we can now look forward toward tackling a smaller number of roster problems we can get our hands around. (Before this afternoon's signings, it seemed as though the problems were insurmountable.

Progress has, indeed, been made.

Thank You Harry...I think what really bothers me at this point ...is that this team...on the defensive side didn't really get impact today...say what you will about Klass...he did impact games until the fat lady was singing after week 8...the new guy is younger and makes plays...but all in all...he has to learn a new system ...he will take awhile...but hopefully the positives(winning attitude) make up for the negative(missed assignments). We still have to improve this side of the Ball in a gargantuan kinda way. We have little depth...the rest of FA must come at the DLine and thru impact guys(Draft Suggs) or sign (Douglas or Holliday)...undrafted FA...coming to the team because we pay them more than other teams has gotten us only so far. And Jeff...we are at least moving you are correct and people notice this more than standing still...but it doesn't mean alot unless you go the extra mile to WIN.
