Semantics much? Then again, you are a lawyer :D
I don’t consider it semantics. You can think it sucks, but you can’t know without seeing it. I wouldn’t consider anyones opinion who hadn’t seen it. I think it’s stupid to do so.

I think it's a stupid standard to try to hold anyone to. I knew Plan 9 From Outer Space sucked as a real movie decades before I ever watched it (and enjoyed it for being the schlock fest train wreck it is). I had no problems sharing that opinion, and that opinion was and is valid when I hadn't seen it.

Let's extrapolate the extreme lack of logic on display in this thread: "You can't tell me hot sauce is hot if you haven't tried it. Nuh uh, it's a stupid opinion and stupid to think you can have an opinion if you haven't tried it."

Gimme a freaking break. I don't need to pay to see a movie or waste my time on it to necessarily know it sucks. Sure, there are varying degrees, but we're talking the garbage of the garbage here, like Crystal Skull. Dial? Maybe I'll change my mind and decide to watch it sometime later. It's probably not going to fall into that automatic suckage column for now.

There's a reason we have movie reviewers. People determine what to see sometimes based on what their favorite reviewers say about a film. Once you find someone who shares your taste in films, you're more likely to take their word for it if they say it sucks - without you having actually seen it. One step beyond that is if you have good friends whose opinion you trust, and they tell you the movie was awful. You can have solid reasons for feeling that a movie is horrible without seeing it personally.

Where your argument falls apart is “know”. You can’t personally know. It’s impossible. You can say likely or probably but not know.

That’s simply a fallacy. People tend to stick to these types of illogical arguments because they have a preconceived bias out of hate or a narrative they want to believe. There are actually people who like movies you don’t. If they took your stance and “knew” without seeing it they never would have seen a movie they ended up liking.

That’s why science is based on observations and doesn’t rely on opinion and why peer reviews exist. An unobserved opinion could end up being valid but not because the opinion had validity. Someone saying something without knowledge is just that.

Sure ok. Movie reviewers, right. What makes their opinions more reliable than me and Cheese, two guys that have, you know, MADE movies?? The movie you saw of mine wasn’t that good but at least we did it. But what do we know? We ain’t critics…

Nothing inherently makes them more reliable. I do give you guys more weight than a random reviewer. For the handful that I've curated and trust though, I trust them more because they have a track record where our opinions and tastes usually line up. I don't line up as well with you and Cheese. We're usually good on the smaller films but diverge on the bigger titles. I can be a picky ass. ;)

I was just offering up an example. Personally, I like to see films before bashing them or praising them.

I liked Gameface a lot and could really appreciate all of the work it took to bring it to a festival.

I wish more people did. It had a lot against it at the time (it was SD after all), but the director didn't even want to try to get out to more places. That always made me mad. So you are one of a very small group of people that have actually seen it.

Huh?! Who said that? LOL. You are right though. I don’t.

Personal or First hand knowledge: information or experience is gained or learned DIRECTLY, rather than from other people.

I look forward to you admonishing dictionaries for cornering the market.

So glad that my wife and I made the trip over. It was a fun experience. I remember back in the day you were trying to get another screening, especially so more ASFN'ers would have an opportunity to see it. Very surprised when it wasn't screened anywhere else.

Have tickets tonight with the family. Was difficult to find 4 seats together during the day, so we have a mostly empty theater during firework hours.

Smarm will smarm. But, sure, I'll puncture this binary "YOU MUST WATCH THE MOVIEZ TO SAY THEY SUCK!" absolutism nonsense being peddled on this thread.

I recently watched the first 20 minutes of a movie and found it godawful. But this is an absolutist situation, according to you and others, so I can't for sure say the rest of the movie sucked, nor can I say the movie overall sucked, because I didn't "gain or learn DIRECTLY" from the whole movie. So I have no right at all to comment on the total movie's quality.

See how absolutely stupid that is? Gimme a break. I said I could see where someone was coming from because he didn't want to spend money on a movie because he knew it would suck and the movie forum went on full-on attack mode. I mean, if you step back and look at it, it's silly in the extreme. Gives me a good laugh, especially when you bring the dictionary along so I can hoist you on your own petard.

Well, yinz can continue fluttering your fans over it, but I'm secure in being on the right side of this nonsensical drivel. Honestly, can yinz attack a poster and start an argument over anything less trivial.

Again...huh? Now you are moving the goal post. Nobody is saying you need to watch a movie to "say they suck". You can say anything. It can be based on anything. You can believe what other people say. Nobody has said any different. Now you are manipulating what is being said defend your position. Without direct observation you can't personally know because you didn't watch it. So, to sling your opinion about something you have not seen holds very little weight and you can't cry about getting eye rolls. That's a grand canyon of difference then what you are saying. There has been ABSOLUTELY no ABSOLUTISM. Oh and the definition of "swarming" is to go along with something you have not seen because a bunch of people say so.

The irony is thick.

I said smarm, not swarm. Joke over head there, I suppose.

The following post of mine is benign. The following post of mine also "provoked" a slew of "OMG you're so wrong" posts. Which is why the absurdity is so funny to me.

"Eh, I kinda see his point. Nobody had to see Crystal Skull, for instance, to know it was a giant steaming turd. Sadly, I did see it to confirm it. The whole "You didn't waste your money so never comment on it" stance is stale. I get he went to extremes, so I only kinda see his point."

By God, that poster has stated an opinion that is simply unacceptable! We must rail against it! Rawr rawr rawr.

LOL LOL LOL

Zero surprise one of the initial attack posts came from you, or that you couldn't help coming back for more. You never waste a chance to take a cheap shot at me.

I've never seen Highlander III: The Sorcerer/Final Dimension. Highlander III: The Sorcerer/Final Dimension sucks. Anyone care to dispute that? Didn't think so. Can we end this silly argument now? lol
You are repeatedly mentioning movies that have been universally reviled by EVERYONE, made by widely acknowledged HACKS starring terrible actors.

That isn’t the case here. In any way shape or form.

That is why your argument is so silly.
