Very interesting article at BSOTS about the Suns starting and sub units. Please read the article before you comment on this thread.

Takaways:

1. Our starting is excellent. 5th best in the league in pp100 possesseions, 3th in defensive rating, top 5 in rebounding, 4th in point differential.
2. Sliding Warren or Leuer in with the starters has been disastrous as far as production--contrary to most impressions on this board (including mine).
3. Warren and Leuer are much more productive with a unit of bench players than with the starters.
4. This directly from the article "Warren does much better with the subs. The very best non-starting unit has been an all-sub unit of Ronnie Price, Alex Len, Jon Leuer, T.J. Warren and Sonny Weems, with a plus-11 net rating per 100 possessions (on only 14 minutes together). Small sample size alert!"
5. This article would seem to encourage a platoon system of sorts, at least until the bench players and starters become more comfortable in specific combinations.

2nd unit needs a better pg than price. Please sit Tele and Weems. Get Booker in with that second unit.

It could work out. Just wish we wouldn't play Price so many minutes before subbing back in.

BTW. Those ratings for the starters bode well for the playoffs, if we make the playoffs.

It might be important to sub two players together than just one. For instance, I would consider putting Leuer and Warren into the game together.

You know Hornacek and the coaching staff are all looking at these same stats. For those who do not like his substitution patterns, this article lends a little credence to what he is doing.

Interesting Stats but that article was written on November 14th, prior to the injury to Chandler and prior to Markieff confirming he is in fact a clown.

Can't find updated 2015/16 stats on 82 games.

Anyone know how to find them. They have always been an interesting site.

I expect that our starters are not leading the league at this point in the season, but I could be wrong.

I agree. I don't know how they could be.

As I understand it, the article was based upon the Suns first two weeks of the Suns season when they were 5-4.

Yet the Suns starters, buoyed by new center Tyson Chandler and improving point guard Eric Bledsoe, boast one of the five best starting lineups in the NBA over the first two weeks of play. Chandler is helping the Suns rank as a top-5 rebounding team while Eric Bledsoe is playing at an All-Star level with 22.4 points and 6.5 assists per game.

A lot has happened since then.

Has there been a team in the modern NBA that used a platoon system that was successful? The only ones that come to mind are the 2009-10 Suns under Gentry and the 2003-04 Grizzlies under Hubie Brown, they were swept out of the 1st round but I think that was the first time they ever made the playoffs so it was a big deal.
