It was not ALL doom and gloom this season. We had to be near the top of defensive scoring. We did set a modern day record holding Detroit to -18 yards rushing.
I'm not saying that Pendy is the God of all God's DC. But we have to at least understand you can't spin gold out of yarn.
I just think we don't have to blow up the whole defense to get to where we want to go.

I agree that we don't need to blow the whole defense up. Get rid of Pendy, add a good 3-4 DC, and take care of the personnel situations. A transition from Pendy to a new DC isn't going to 'blow up the whole defense'. It'll hopefully utilize our players better in the same base defense.

Come on, Stout. Why keep focusing on something you recently admitted is not going to happen, when the Cards confirmed they had extended Pendergast's contract?

You're a Thespian, are you not? Put a brave face on it and move on to act II. You'll feel better. Unless you're mired in certain tragedy. Even Shakespeare did comedy from time to time.

Alas, poor Stout. Methinks thou doth protest too much.

Regarding Pendergast, I've heard he's almost a lock to get some interest from the University of Arizona athletic department for their head coaching gig if/when Mike Stoops gets canned this next December. The possibility got a mention as well in some local rag a few months back as well. Not sure if he gets it or not as there's obviously a lot of time in between now and then. But I doubt the Bidwills are paying Pendy the kind of cash a Pac-10 HC gets and supposedly quite a few boosters really like the guy. Just something to keep an eye on going forward.

Personally, I think Pendergast is a decent NFL defensive coordinator. Nothing great, but he's certainly not terrible either. You're not going to find too many great defenses that lack a legit outside rush or shutdown corner so I'm not so sure why people hold him to such high expectations. Obviously if there was someone like Gregg Williams, Monte Kiffin, or Jim Johnson out there but getting a DC like that is pipe. Whisenhunt seems to like him, that's good enough for me right now.

LOL I love ya, Skkorp. You're a good man. I'd really like to meet a few Thespians...then they can...oh, wait, you didn't say Lesbians, did ya? ;)

Just because it's a certainty doesn't make it a good idea. I'm just astounded at how bad he coaches, yet how many people still defend him to the death.

High expectations? Not really. I expected our defense to get trashed after all of those injuries. I'd just have rather we went down swinging instead of crawling into a fetal position like a bunch of pansies and letting offenses kick us repeatedly in the head. Pendy coaches scared rather than aggressively. It sucks, and no one should be satisfied with it.

En Fuego said it before I could. This defense would improve tremendously with 1 lock down CB. A guy like that takes away half the field. It's damn near impossible to have a great defense with an average pass rush AND average CB's.

I remember when we had one of the all time best shut down corners and one of the NFL's premier pass rushers. And our defense was one of the worst in the NFL.
