Okay, Jose Canseco. :)

Ouch!!!! Luv ya, baby!!! :D

I've long felt he was a candidate for HGH..... I got a good look at the beefcake calendar he posed for (2001?) and based upon what I saw, it seems a lot more likely that he was a juicer than not. The thin skin, the way overdeveloped musculature, etc.

Of course, we'll never know for sure, 'less he fesses up...... But my guess is that there was a whole helluva lot of testerone, HGH, andro, yohimbe and other stuff flotating around MLB during Spivey's DBack years.... And he just has the look....

Of course, it could be just hard work, but....... ;)

And I am an equal opportunity slanderer.... I had serious thoughts of juicing for some other DBacks in 2001, too, including Gonzo....

Again, we'll never know for sure (and I ain't trying to sell a book, either!! :D :) ;)

So lets make a list of potential Steroids users on the 2001 squad:
Spivey
Gonzo
Johnson(?)
Bautista(His number spiked)

Who's numbers spiked in 01?

A 30 HR guy jumping up to 57 then going back down? What did Grace offer him better protection...

Its amazing yet sad that anytime a guy has a peak year in baseball theres automatically whispers of juice. Countless players have had career years long before steroids, you know.

Another guy I believed was a juicer was Brady Anderson.

Bret Boone, Ryan Klesko, Brian Giles, Gary Sheffield, Eric Gagne, Billy Wagner, Roger Clemens, Rich Aurilia (he hit close to 40 homers a few years ago then hit 6 last year), Ivan Rodriquez, Jason Giambi, Miguel Tejada......

Ken Griffey's hamstring problems are probably steriod related, which is a shame because he had superior natural talent.

Why would Gagne or any other pitchers use steroids?

Have you read Jose Canseco's book? If so, did you read how he introduces steroids to a TON of players. What players DIDNT take steroids. I see these guys up close. I HIGHLY doubt that more than half of MLB is not taking steroids. I'm starting to really believe Canseco. I mean he mentions Pudge, one of my favorite players, in it then mysteriously he comes to spring training 20 pounds lighter.

Most of MLB has taken steroids, we can't deny that. Hell, even DBacks have. Face the fact. Hopefully MLB can solve this steroid problem fast.

Of course he did. No doubt in my mind can he hit 50 one season then not hit over 30..

I'm not sure... I'm sure there is some advantage, such as stronger leg muscles, pushing training harder during the offseason. Tony Saunders from the Marlin's arm shattered during a game by throwing a pitch, he was their top prospect and we specifically mentioned in Canseco's book.

Because steroids allow much faster recovery from each pitching start and also a little extra power. Think 92-93 mph instead of 89-90 fastball. There's no question pitchers have used steroids.

Gonzo said that on the 2000 offseason mlb tour to Japan, Bonds (specifying him by name) was extremely gracious and very helpful to him personally. I believe Gonzo was like Sheffield and unwittingly used - but probably figured out fairly quick that the stuff wasn't just flaxseed oil. (Spivey has also said that Bonds was really nice and helpful to him.)

Think also of Durazo, Alex Cabrera, and Jose Guillen (who was pretty notorious).

btw, Bonds' long-time ex-girlfriend is singing to the Feds. She says he talked about using steroids and how it contributed to his triceps tendon problem, and he'd have to be careful - she never saw him use and he was pretty firm about not injecting. She has lots of other stuff on tape and in writing - sounds like perjury and tax fraud charges may be around the corner. Some of this is very recent leaked Grand Jury testimony.

Have to say - it sure does look like a J. Edgar Hoover-type federal vendetta against Bonds. And the Federal Grand Jury needs a plumber. Leaking like a seive.

I would think that as a pitcher it would be more benificial to throw harder to be longer and linkier, with more flexibility, then a ton of muscles. I can see bulking up on legs, but getting big arms wouldn't make much sense.

For the hundredth time - on this board alone - steroids do not by themselves make you bulk up. They DO allow muscle tissue to regenerate very rapidly. Therefore they allow people who WANT to bulk up to work out longer, harder, much more frequently, thus enabling faster and bigger muscle growth than you could ever do without them. If you do exercises aimed at endurance or strength rather than bulk, they let you do THAT longer, harder, faster. But every time a pitcher throws 100 pitches, he has created micro-tears and fatigue throughout his arm, shoulder, back, butt, leg muscles. If he takes steroids, even without working out in the gym he will recover in half the time.

The part about strengthening (not bulking!) leg, butt, back, arm muscles is also true, allowing for that extra speed. One drawback for pitchers would be the tiny rotator cuff muscles can not grow or strengthen as much or as fast as the bigger surrounding muscles (delts, triceps, biceps, etc.) and like tendons, which do not gain a thing from steroids, the tiny muscles can get torqued too much by suddenly disproportionate bigger adjacent muscles.

I do not deny that guys have used steroids, and I do not deny that they are a problem that needs to be fixed. However, it is completely ridiculous to start pointing fingers at every guy that has ever had a career year with the only proof being that a guy's home run total spiked. This is starting to turn into some kind of stupid witch hunt. And Id like to know how you know that "most of MLB" has taken steroids?

I thought about it. Canseco isn't full of **** when it comes to steroids. So far he's been right on EVERYTHING.

Look at Gonzo on Houston, then look at him now. He's definatley developed a lot of muscle that I, nor not many people on this forum could develop in a short period of time.

Steroids do increase fast twitch fibers, according to Canseco. Which I can see helping a pitcher a lot. Steroids no doubt have helped pitchers more than hitters, yet hitters are taking all the heat.

So far Canseco's 3/3.

1) Right about McGwire
2) Right about Jason Giambi
3) So far he's right about Ivan Rodriguez (Lost 22 lbs. since last year)
