The potential problem with Alex Smith is salary. For any playoff caliber team that drafts a young QBOF, Smith would be a very good stop-gap. But, he won't want to be paid like one.

Most fans, maybe. But it would be up to whomever is coach. If it's Bruce, he won't take an aging Smith.

Sure, he would. He took an aging Palmer, he'd absolutely accept Smith. I think he wants to avoid any "rebuilding" years, with a young, inexperienced arm behind center and I appreciate that. The Cards have had a dozen different rebuilding episodes and it feels like I've suffered through all of them.

Smith has shown the ability to step in and do a professional job, even if he hasn't dazzled. Until 2015, the same could be said of CP. If Palmer goes away and Smith steps in, I think we've got a shot.

He's due over 20m next season, so unless he craps the bed this year...

How does Smith, particularly and aging Smith, fit in BA's offense?

Notable BA QBs:

  • Palmer
  • Roethlisberger
  • Peyton
  • Luck

All four of these QBs could run a high octane offense and push the ball downfield. Alex Smith cannot.

As I said earlier, there's not a worse fit in BA's offense than Smith. His subaverage arm is not getting younger and he's afraid to take risks.

Alex Smith's agent says QB will remain in demand
NFL agent Tom Condon doesn't speak much publicly, but when he does it usually comes with interesting insight.
This week, one of the most powerful agents in football spoke to "The Fuzzcast" with Ben Kremer and Pete Sweeney (#Fuzzcast) and was asked about one of his clients, Alex Smith. The Kansas City Chiefs traded a future first-round pick for the right to draft quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who could take Smith's job eventually. Condon doesn't sound worried his 33-year-old client would be hard-pressed to find work if the Chiefs move on with Mahomes.

Sweeney asked Condon if he gave any advice to Smith after the Chiefs made their move for Mahomes.

Sounds like his time is running out in KC. Makes little mistakes but Also little game changing plays.
No, no, no. I'm getting tired of retreads coming in here and QBing this team. I know of no other team who refuses to address a QBOTF as this franchise does.

Well, if we make the playoffs, we again will not have the option of getting a top QB and if you never have the option to draft a top QB, you have to bring in veterans instead.

Or trade most of two drafts to move up to draft a QB....

Or just be smarter than everyone else (Aaron Rodgers drafted late first round by a Green Bay playoff team).
Or the Raiders drafting Derek Carr... who could not help his talented brother being drafted by the expansion Texans and being used as a tackling dummy, and really Gabbert if handled right could be a younger version of Smith but with a much more powerful arm

I would much rather go after Kirk Cousins or Matt Stafford.

Unfortunately probably both will be unavailable. Cousins is the most underrated QB in the league in my opinion, easily top 10 - I think we should have gone after him this offseason. I really see him as being equivalent to Derek Carr, just a little bit older.

Call me crazy, but I actually think Gabbert might be better in BA's system than Alex Smith. We need somebody comfortable going deep and that is not Smith. However I don't think BA will be around much longer, probably only another 2 or 3 years, so the system may change soon enough.

I feel like Goodwin is being groomed to be the new HC, and now leftwich the new OC, not sure how well that will really work.

Nope.

Right now there's been heated buzz about our keeping Gabbert as #3QB; & now - with #2CB still iffy - we're being asked to consider another QB in Smith?

Maybe under a different set of circumstances, but not now at this time.

Why would anybody want Alex Smith as their starting QB? He is THE definition of a mediocre QB and you're not winning anything of significance with him under center. I'd rather have a guy you have a chance to win it all with, like Palmer, or have a terrible guy so that you have the chance to draft a QBOF at the top of the draft.

This message board will be epic when Keim signs Blake Bortles in the offseason.

I watched Bortles at UCF, specifically his game against South Carolina. I still think he can be a pretty good player, takes some QBs years to become good.

A competition of Bortles vs. Gabbert isnt as bad as it sounds, with Arians, Moore, and Co. providing tutelage.

I put Palmer is a class of QB like Rivers, Eli(I know he's won), and Andrew Luck. These guys are good enough passers of the football that they have the talent to win it all but, other than Eli, for whatever reason, haven't. Smith is not in their class when it comes to throwing the ball.
