Is anyone else getting a kick out Shaq v. Kobe or is it just me?

That is debatable. If I needed a player this season only, its a toss up. If I need 3 seasons out of a player, I take Marion over either one of these guys.

Heh, if it only was that easy.

Seriously though, I don't understand people's love affair with Shawn Marion. He stands behind the three point line, waits for somebody (Marbury, Hardaway, or Stoudemire) to draw a double team, he gets the ball and shoots a three pointer.

He is an excellent rebounder, no argument there, but other than that, I just don't see anything great about this guy. He is probably the top SF in the league, if you count Kobe and T-Mac as SG's and KG as a PF, but that's nothing impressive. Swingmen are dime a dozen in the NBA.

OK, I will somewhat agree with your assesment. Sure, they are old dudes, but they are both in a better shape than 90% of 25 year olds in the league.

I actually wanted to show how the Lakers can get good players for very little money, but I decided to take a cheap shot at Shawn, whom I really don't like. It wasn't necessary.

The point is that the Lakers can do much better than Shawm Marion at $12- 14M a year.

So why aren't more swingman kings of fantasy basketball?

USAtoday had a statistics analysis out there for each position and Marion was #1 overall and had the biggest lead above the #2 player at his position.

Fantasy basketball? Are you kidding me?

He might be the best SF, but if you combine SF's and PF's, you will see how insignificant Shawn Marion is.

I think I understand your point although I still don't quite agree. I don't think they can get as good a player as Marion for that kind of money. There are only a few in the league in his class and they are tied up.

If you are saying that they can get a better cash to talent ratio with a vet free agent than what Marion's contract would offer--then that might be true.

IOW, slightly less of a player, alot less money spent=better value.

Insignificant enough to make the allstar team as a forward in the West over Brand and Malone.

Insignificant enough to be rated a consensus top 20 in many cases top 15 NBA player.

There is NO player in the league who is better than Shawn Marion and makes less money.
And there won't be one except Amare, Yao because they have their rookie contracts before they are maxed out just like Marion.

You have very obviously never watched a suns game. How does Marion get all of those rebounds if he is alway "just standing" outside the 3 point line. Marion is constantly on the move. He gets most of his points from offensive rebounds and beating his man off of the dribble. He shoots most of his shots from 15' in. Go back to watching the lakers.

Maybe not, but Stojakovic is nearly as good, and he makes barely half as much.

Stojakovic is injury prone, older, not as athletic, not nearly as good defender, doesn't get the steals, blocks or assists.

His FT% is 2% better than Marion and his FG% is better but that is already it.

Unlike Stojakovic, Marion improved every season while Stojakovic hasn't improved since 3 years, in fact he got worse last season.

i agree with all this except the "beating his man off of the dribble" part. shawn doesn't do that well . . . yet (hopefully).

yeah, but he still kills shawn. head-to-head, stojakovic wins. though i'd still take shawn over him.

Ouchie,

I definitely agree with you about Shawn Marion beating his man off the dribble. It happened every once in awhile last season, but the majority of his shots were jump shots. I think that will change this year. I think he is intent on going to the basket more frequently this season.

Stojakovic has often done better against the Suns than Shawn Marion has done against the Kings. That's true. However in Marion's defense he is often stuck trying to help double-team other Kings' players like Chris Webber and Vlade Divac.

Marion absolutely killed Peja last season.

Marion - 22ppg 51%FG 43%3s 9.5rpg 2.5spg

Peja averaged something like 12ppg 4rpg and 35%FG against Shawn.

I think most people's opinion of Shawn vs. Peja stems back to that series against the Kings where Shawn just disappeared. Now, it's a couple years later, I just don't see a repeat of that kind of domination--from any player, let alone Peja.

You're probably right. I didn't even bother to look back at the statistics from last year's matchups were those from the year before.
