Although the Cardinals personnel department and coaching staff have been tied up with draft preparation and off-season workouts, Cardinals players haven’t missed a beat in serving the community.

On Monday, April 14, offensive tackle L.J. Shelton and mascot Big Red coached a Gatorade Junior Training Camp for students at Kachina Elementary School in Glendale.

Shelton ran a group of fourth graders through non-contact drills and also spent time answering questions from the students – everything from his weight to his shoe size to his marital status.

“I had a blast with the kids, but it is a good thing I play on the offensive line,” said Shelton. “I hit one poor girl right in the face with the football so obviously I am not a good quarterback.”

On Tuesday, April 15, wide receiver Jake Soliday and Big Red hosted a Gatorade Junior Training Camp at Oasis Elementary School in Peoria. Soliday was happy to demonstrate his receiving skills in one of the drills which involved diving and catching a football.

“After playing ball for so many years, it is sort of nice to land on a cushioned mat instead of diving for the ball and pounding into the turf,” shared Soliday.

On Wednesday afternoon, April 17, defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch and Big Red hosted a Gatorade Junior Training camp, while the Cardinals Cheerleaders held a Junior Cheer Clinic at Esperanza Elementary in Phoenix.

On Thursday, April 17, wide receiver Jason McAddley and team mascot Big Red hosted kids from the Wyndham Buttes resort as part of a Cardinals Kids Camp at the team’s south Tempe training facility.

The participants split into two teams for a special relay race through one of the non-contact stations.

“We came out victoriously like I knew we would,” boasted McAddley of the team he coached. “We were the most athletic and we did good things out here.”

McAddley’s boast drew laughs from the other captain, who claimed McAddley obstructed the pathway of some of his team members.

On Saturday, April 19 former defensive lineman Ray Perkins hosted his first annual football camp for kids from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Cardinals facility. The camp will include three hours of on-field work, followed by lunch and an hour-long presentation from Pinal County Sheriff Roger Vanderpool. The camp is free to all children interested. Registration will begin at 8 a.m.
