Is it really smart to trade down?

Some of you guys want to trade back with the top pick so much & even though it sounds good in theory, that’s what it is, in theory.

There’s been a lot of trade backs over the past so many years & yet I can’t even name one where the trading back team has actually won that trade compared to the trading up team.

No need to trade back away from elite talent just to end up with a big possibility of inferior talent.

Only instance I remember where trading back (from #1 overall) actually helped was when the Chargers traded the #1 pick to the Falcons in 2001.

Atlanta drafted Vick, and San Diego ended up picking Ladainian Tomlinson at #5 overall. Chargers also drafted Drew Brees in the 2nd round that year.

How many great players has been drafted outside the top 10 pick?
Mahomes
A.Donald
Jj Watt
Deshaun watson
Aaron rodgers
Chandler jones
Beckham

Trade down and get a player of that caliber and adding other picks, looks bad?

The Cardinals traded with the Chargers down from the #2 so they could draft Ryan Leaf and moved one spot to #3, picking up another first rounder and a second round pick. We got Wadsworth and Chavous (both solid players, Wadsworth destroyed by injuries that couldn't be accounted for) and the next year got David Boston who put up multiple 1000 yard seasons before going completely insane. We got value for all three of those picks (Wads and Chavous were big parts of the 1998 playoff team as rookies) while the Chargers ended up with one of the biggest busts of all time.

The Rams trade down with Washington for RG3 netted them a huge haul and some key pieces of their D before they got snapped up in FA after last year's playoff run.

Way I look at it... three teams beneath us are going to need QBs. Oakland/Jax/Giants. All of them will draft in the top 2-7. If we can trade down with one of them and get their first this year, next year and a second this year, I'd do it in a heartbeat. They're ALL going to be terrible again next year and that's gonna be another nice pick.

Or, if Oakland is really desperate for a QB, you convince their ********* that Jax or the Giants are going to trade up for 1, and grab their first this year (#2) and either the Bears or Cowboys pick and call it a day. If you can get two first round picks from Oakland this year, to move down one spot, you jump at it without thinking twice.

And we also screwed the pooch by not selecting Suggs (who wanted to play for cards) & got Pace & Skillet hands Johnson. Pace was solid.

Imo the safest route is picking your guy if you’re sold on him!

but that was moving from 6th pick to 17thand 18th. I wouldn't do anything near that drastic of a movie. I'm talking moving from 1 to 2, 3 or 5 MAX.

And if teams are looking for QB and we're not taking one and there's the opportunity to only move down at most 3 or 4 picks and recoup a bounty back, it's foolish not to do so. especially because I don't think there are generational talents at the top of the draft who don't have major question marks (Bosa injuries, Oliver attitude).

What about the RG3 deal?

If Key pieces = mostly bad players, then yea. Michael Brockers is the best player involved in that trade & even then he probably has had 2 good seasons max.

I can give you a much longer list of teams that stayed put, picked their guy and that guy was a total bust. You either can spot talent or you can’t. Still multiple picks means you might blow one but cash 2.
But you can’t give me a list where the trading back team won the trade by a landslide can you?

If we trade back, it better start in the 2nd round.

It's too hard to predict how the draft will play out. Much will depend on how we do in Free Agency. This team is an open book. Because our needs are so widespread, a HC like McCarthy makes more sense. Someone that has been there and done this is more important than taking a risk on a young offensive minded guy that wouldn't know how to build an ENTIRE team top to bottom. McCarthy could do that. Harbaugh would have been a great hire, but he's no longer on the hot seat. There are so many intricacies involved when you're as bad as we are.

Impossible to answer until we know what the offers are to move back. We need so many things, OL, CB, LB, DL, WR, it's just not that easy to fix all that in one offseason so IF we can get a good offer that moves us down a few slots and picks up more picks and or players, you have to at least consider it.

If someone really wants to come up for Haskins or Herbert and you don't want that player, you consider a deal

As I've stated previously...Bryant Johnson and Calvin Pace.

Trading down is a viable option

teams that need QBs are, in rough draft slots today -- are at #5 (Jax), #8 (NYG), #9(TB), #12 (Cincy), #13 (Denv), #16 (Mia) and #17 (Wash)

You don't think those teams have noticed how KC and Houston spent the capital to move up to get a guy at QB they liked and are in good shape as a result?

So -- I like Joey Bosa, but I don't like him so much that I would pass on, lets say, Deandre Baker, CB Georgia, or Devin White, LB LSU + a 1st rounder next year instead.

for me...trading back only works if you stay within the talent...I wouldnt trade beyond five.
we can get greedy williams or devin white at five

Trading out of the top 10 is a non-starter, IMO.

Move up is usually driven by QB need and that leaves Jacksonville at #5 and possibly NY at #8.

If Jacksonville is spooked by the thought that NY might move up, then there's a scenario where we could move to #5 and add further assets.

In the end, I don't see it.

Bosa or Williams and move on.

We, at this point, have to top pick in the first 4 rounds and that should create some action in rounds 2, 3, 4.

Not only is it a viable option, there is a chance to move down twice if things fall into place correctly. If Bosa blows up and is considered a generational talent, then see if 2,3,4 will trade for maybe 2nd round this year or a 1st next year. Then move that pick to one of the QB needy teams in the 5 - 10 range. Get another 1st or 2nd for that and still pick in the top 10 or early teens by trading with someone trying to jump jax or whichever team looking for a QB . We can get a position of need there more likely and still get a really good player and maybe a ransom of picks. I know it's very early to be suggesting a situation like this but that is the only way i would trade down us in this scenario, where we come away with a boatload of picks. If not take Bosa call it a day

Why would anyone pass on a "generational" talent?

Hopefully one QB establishes himself as the top price in the predraft process. Or at least a couple of teams become really desperate to trade up.

I don't see another Clowney or Garrett for us at 1st overall. Those were guys with freak athleticism and pass rush prowess. Bosa is really good, but is he a freak athlete? If his brother wasn't a NFL star already, would he still be that highly regarded?

With all the needs we have, trading down seems a smart choice.

to me, that says to stay put and take him

I like the player -- I just don't think he is a clear head and shoulders better than any of the next 5-6 players

Does Bosa have legitimate durability concerns? What is his injury history?

If he has no medical red flags he is a no-brainer.
