At backup SG. He'll play guard no doubt.

Don't get me wrong. If I had it my way the Suns would split all the time at PF between Akim and Frye. It should be that way if your running a more traditional lineup.

Maybe I am jaded because the Suns have NEVER seemed to get away from small ball. I hope it's true and I think Pietrus could probably play some guard. I guess we will see.

It would be that way if Warrick could actually rebound or play defense.

But unfortunately, that's not the case.

It doesn't effect what Pietrus does though. The Suns need someone to play backup guard and Pietrus is the only one who has played guard before in his career.

That could be. However, I predict that Gortat will get the majority of playing time at center and the Suns will spend the rest of the time running and gunning playing small ball. If that is the case...Frye gets the Center time, Akim if playing well should get the PF time. However, if he is not playing well (which seems to be every other game), then I see one of our SF's sliding to PF. With the SF at log jam...someone is going to be playing out of position.

That is the Suns Forte.

So you assume Dudley or Childress play backup SG, correct?

Childress has 0 3pt shooting range. That's a no-no to play SG for us. Scratch him off the list.

Dudley had 2 pts in his first start playing as a SG. Pretty obvious he's a SF & a SF only. Scratch him off the list.

That means Pietrus plays backup SG.

Childress has a better chance of playing PF cause he is better close to the rim but after this trade, I doubt even that happens.

I think in most cases Lopez is the odd man out. Let's face facts. Lopez is massively underachieving on the boards. Your starting Center is averaging less then 5 RPG. He has had a reputation for underachieving. If you are one of the worst Rebounding teams in the league you have to make the change. You cannot have your "legit" big man (and 7 footer at that) getting so few rebounds.

If the Suns go to a traditional lineup then Robin might be a semi-productive backup. That is what I would do. However, I am not convinced the Suns give up small ball. In that case Robin rides the pine during small ball IMO.

He is a SF that the suns will almost guaranteed play at PF. Why wouldn't they? They played Turk there and he wasn't. They play AW there and he plays like a SF much of the time. I just find it hard to believe that Peitrus won't find time there.

Maybe I am wrong but that is what I am assuming. I see the Suns playing with a new staring lineup moving Lopez to the bench, possibly starting AW still but playing Peitrus off the bench almost right away.

If you have Grant in at SF, Dudley at SF and other players at SF....where does Peitrus fit in? I don't see the Suns not playing him with his supposed defense being a key factor for bringing him in. I guess they could still have Grant covering PF like he has been the past few weeks but something tells me we will see Peitrus out there with either Grant or Dudley much for the rest of the season.

I have little doubt that 6'6 Pietrus will spend bits of time defending PFs along with our other wings (6'8 Grant, 6'7 Duds and even 6'8 Childress) but he'll probably log more minutes defending SGs.

I wouldn't go so far as to say the Suns brought Pietrus in for any purpose - he'd worn out his welcome in Orlando and my guess is they stipulated that he be included in the deal.

My fondest hope is that Gentry will finally take the wraps off Gani Lawal who is a legitimate PF at 6'9 235 - and is said to be back with the team.

Lopez plays well when he's not the only big guy trying to board the ball. For ex. he played well with Amare, Brook, etc.

Lopez would do well playing with Gortat. That's why I think they should start together WHICH MEANS Frye will go to the BENCH where him and the rest of the bench were playing so well last season.

We need Frye back on the bench for them to play well again.

Here's my depth chart:

PG Nash, Dragic
SG Carter, Pietrus
SF Hill, Dudley, Childress
PF Gortat, Frye,
C Lopez, Barron,

^^Of course Gortat is gonna come off the bench in the beginning and Frye will start, but as the season goes on I think we'll be seeing that ^^^ lineup.

Lopez is too slow to play PF but I am not sure about Gortat. Everyone is saying he was brought in here to play Center NOT PF. I had not really though of Gortat playing PF much.....I will have to wait to see how quick he is to see if he can. Just not sure if that is a good idea.

Ok lets go back to the whole Nash trade thing. Here's what the 2 time MVP had to say about it:

"I signed the contract extension to stay," Nash said. "I did that for a reason. I wanted to play with these guys, some of them. At least some of them were here when I signed. I still think we have a chance to be a good team. You just got to roll with it. What are my options? Quit?"

A two-time MVP could demand a trade.

"I could be in a city that maybe doesn't have the guys we have," Nash said. "I want to be positive and make this a great opportunity and a great season. I know a lot of people are telling me to demand a trade. If I demand one, does that mean I get to pick my team? No. It's not that simple. Maybe somebody could explain to me the reasoning. You can't just go in and tell management where you want to go. I signed to play here and I want to make this team a really good one."

OK, here is my entire thing with the Suns. It has been and always will be about winning a title for me. No more fun ball, no more small ball no more "hey their entertaining" crap.

This team needs to win a title. So, I have to ask myself, can this team win a title as built? I say no way. So, if the Suns traded Nash tomorrow not only would I understand it but I would applaud it so you can get something while he still has value.

Having said that....if the Suns want to see what they have with this new roster, I would be OK with that too only through the rest of this season. Carter WILL NOT be resigned. Which means you have a massive hole to fill at SG and from an offensive standpoint. This trade says to me "one last try".

What is the point of keeping Nash beyond this season if this does not work out? Your not going to get anybody in here barring another blockbuster trade to give Steve a legit chance. If Carter doesn't work out and Gortat ends up being average...the only major trade piece left on this roster is Steve. You can't get something for nothing. Unless your the one getting the Suns talent. :D

Time to move on.

On defense he'd play C and Gortat would be PF. But on offense Lopez would be the PF and Gortat the C because as we saw today Lopez can knock down that 10-15 jump shot we need our PFs to knock down.

From watching Gortat play, I can tell you that he'll be our best pick & roll player. He's better than Warrick but in Orlando they never ran it often with him and did it with Howard more.

He should be able to dominate it playing with Nash, aka the best pick & roll PG in the history of the NBA.

He's quick enough to guard most starting PFs but I'd be worried against guys like Odom who are extremely versatile. But Odom comes off the bench and Frye comes off the bench so they can guard each other.

Man I'm so **** excited!!! Thursday can't come fast enough!!! I wish they'd play tomorrow. We'll probably lose against Miami though since our guys will not be in synch with each other.

BTW here's a clip for those who haven't seen Gortat play;

From Gortat's website (translated using Google Chrome's in-browser translater):

I'm already on the studies that were successful. Everything is going so well that I feel that I could today to debut in the colors of the Phoenix Suns in a game against the San Antonio Spurs "said ten minutes after passing medical tests, Marcin Gortat.

Get that man on a plane--pronto!

If you have a website translator, it's a great site--all kinds of comments (apparently by him) about the trade. He seems really psyched about it and will wear the number 4 on the Suns.

He was tired of being in the shadow of Howard. Heck the guy has his own nickname, being second fiddle must have sucked. Now time to unleash the Hammer in the Western Conference!

I completely forgot that Gortat was originally drafted by Phoenix (2005, 57th overall). The last player we drafted, traded and then got back turned out pretty successful. :)

How many backups do you know that has a website with so many followers! :D

Just like Chinese people like Rockets because of Yao, Poland people will now love the Suns because of Gortat.

Nash about to become famous in Europe as well as US and Canada!

That's a pretty good translation actually, but I can do better :)

"I'm already done with my physical, which went good. Everything is going so well that I feel like I could, already today, debut in the Phoenix Suns colors in the game against the San Antonio Spurs."
(I don't think he actually means that he would play but only that he could if it were up to him).

Some other stuff from the website:

Gorat will wear number 4 (his 13 obviously already taken) in the honor of his basketball mentor Sasha Obradovic.

Anyone want me to translate his thoughts on the trade, or is the automatic translation good enough?

This is a great opportunity for Gortat. He was never going to take his game to the next level playing behind Howard.

I'm hoping he already has taken his game to the next level by going up against Howard in practice every day.
