Is Rod Graves savvy enuf to avoid reaching for Brown at #5?

Great Blue North just came out with their 3-round mock with Brown going #20 to the Giants after Rick Gosselin predicted the same thing last weekend. I have yet to see a mock draft with Brown in the top ten.

Kent Somers has a troubling section in today's Republic.....

There have been reports that the Cardinals like Penn State offensive tackle Levi Brown more than Thomas. But according to some "experts," taking Brown as high as fifth would be a reach. That supposedly is part of what is motivating the Cardinals to trade down.

Graves declined comment on the value of taking specific players at No. 5, but said he is not worried about how anyone else has players ranked.

If a couple of years from now "a guy is lining up and playing and benefiting your football team, then nobody cares whether you selected him exactly where the prognosticators thought they should have gone," Graves said

You can't pick your guys based on another team's board. If you have a guy rated the highest based on your needs, your schemes, your whatever, you pick your guy when you have the chance. If Levi Brown is Whis's and Grimm's top prospect, I dont care who is sitting there as well, you go for YOUR guy.

I fear that the Cards will trade down and end up re-doing the 2003 draft (Johnson-Bryant). Just get your guy and deal with it from there. So what if he's rated the 9th best prospect and you have the 5th pick. If you don't have the 9th, you go for the guy YOU rate out highest.

My only hope if we do trade down and re-do the 2003 draft is that we get our Q for the D....

If Brown gets by Miami's pick then he'll most likely slide down to at least 14-15 range where Carolina and Pittsburgh pick. I could easily see him being there at 20. Just go back to last year with Justice going from top 10 to top ten in round 2. To answer your question,YES, Brown is a reach at 5.

Brown in the Top Ten

Totally Red, I've seen plenty of mocks with Brown going to Miami at #9 or Houston at #10. If we were sure that he'd be there a trade with Buffalo (who covet AP) would be a no-brainer.

Absolutely. I'd rather have Staley than Brown anyway.

He's not a reach if the Cardinals rank him in the top 5 of their 120 "players who can most help us" board.

It doesn't matter where he might rank on the Big (best athlete) Board or other teams' board. All that matters is: Is he considered the guy who can help the team the most at the #5 pick?

If he is, you stop second guessing yourself and you pull the trigger. If it's Thomas, it's Thomas. If it's Peterson, it's Peterson. If it's Brown, it's Brown.

Interesting aside on Brown. Wolfley and Calvisi were dissecting some tape on linemen (including Thomas, Brown and Staley). Wolfley (who rates Brown second to Thomas) said he felt one of Brown's drawbacks was that he possibly would be better suited to play RT than LT. Since, on our O-line, left tackle assignments are likely to be more like traditional right tackle assignments, wouldn't Levi fit in best at LT on the Cards?

I heard on NFL network that Whiz likes Thomas but the FO likes Levi Brown, they went on to say that the FO usually wins out.
I hope this is a rumor or speculation because they really need to give Whis the players he needs to work with wether it be Thomas, Brown or whoever else he likes.

Here is a theory, the Cards want people to not know which they prefer. If people think the Cards don't like Thomas, they are less likely to trade up past the Cards to get him.

Bad, bad theory. Put that one in your pocket, and we'll forget you ever said it. ;)

Oh yeah, a source close to the Cardinals told me that the Cards really don't like Thomas, and they might not draft him if they decide to draft someone else.

The Valley so low.
If you draft Brown, you may also have to spend on an electric shock machine to jolt him the morning before each game--and that hurts the Cards' bottom line.

Seriously, I'd hope the Cards have done their OL homework. What scares me most is these idiotic statements that 'We're able to be flexible because of our FAs.' If they believe that, or even think it's credible, they may have spent more time evaluating, say Branch vs. Mr. Breakable, AP, so that their evaluation of OTs is not much better than :)barf:) Mel Kiper's.

Yes, he is. He's not at 10, but he's a reach at 5. Especially if Gaines Adams, Joe Thomas, and Adrian Peterson were on the board.

But Levi Jones was a reach for the Bengals, as well. If Levi Brown becomes a great player, it won't matter what Kiper said one Saturday in April...

I would be indifferent to either.

One or the other would make me happy.

The only way that I will scream, is if we draft Brown at #5. (well, drafting Alan Branch will make me puke) If we want Brown, lets trade down to 7-9. If he is gone, oh well. Trade down again or pick up Staley who I feel will be the better player anyway.

I'd rather reach for Staley at 9 and pick up an extra day 1 pick, than reach for Brown at 5.

The thing about Staley is that he's not ready to contribute at an NFL level right now. He may end up the best prospect overall, but he's similar to the Titans' Michael Roos in that he's going to have to wait a year or two to learn the position and adjust to the speed of the game.

Thanks to Graves and Whisenhunt, we have to get an NFL-ready OT right now, and that guy is Joe Thomas.

If we take Brown, that is what I will be telling myself over and over again.

It just bugs me that the downside on him is that he has lapses in concentration and will have too many false starts. The Cards just got rid of that player.

That being said -- while smaller than Davis, he is more athletic and quick, so better able to handle the speed guys.

in a word.. yes..

If we are dead set on taking Brown trade down to #8 pick up an extra 2nd or 3rd rounder.... and then take Brown..

It makes no sense to take Brown at 5... IMO

Maybe the Falcons will want to get ahead of the Redskins for Landry. NFL network said the front office wants Thomas and the coaching staff loves Brown. Which probably means we will pick Patrick Willis. Todd Mcshay laughed at the thought of the Cardinals even considering taking Brown over Thomas

I disagree.

I've seen this a lot on here: "playerX isn't a reach if that's who the Cards want."

That's only true if the Cardinals were infallible. We know they're far from it.
