Both are going to be starters this season, barring injury. One will move to RG.

Iupati is not the replacement for Cooper.

OK...

Cooper was the LG in 2014, and Iupati would be the LG in 2015. That is replacing him.

Cooper will have a chance to compete for the RG spot w/ Larsen, Watford and Steen.

That is what is being said, and if accurate, that is replacing Cooper. Now, that isn't the team giving up on him, but they clearly aren't certain he will get it together after a disappointing first two years. Cooper has gone from the long term starter at LG to fighting for the RG position. Not a ringing endorsement.

Or perhaps the team wanted to sign the best interior lineman available because it had a void at RG anyway. Even if Cooper had started every game of the season, the team would've made the move to get Iupati. If anyone is being replaced, it's Fanaika.

And who from the coaching staff is saying Iupati is playing LG? We can assume, but my guess is Coop stays on the left side and Iupati goes to RG. That's where the mauler goes in our OL scheme.

Bingo.

Too many people are looking for the implications of the move on others on the roster as opposed to how it makes us a better team.

Your ability to predict a counter-factual of the future is pretty impressive.

And nonsense.

Hmmm... Seems like a bit of a leap to make the above statement. If Cooper had started every game and played well, I don't think anyone can say with much certainty that with most of the line settled, we would have dumped huge money there, as opposed to dumping that money in serious problem areas like OLB/ILB.

Maybe they would have gone all in on the O-Line, but if it looked pretty well settled, there could have been much big spending on other areas. Them going that hard after Iupati and making him THE priority FA signing tells me they were probably worries about both G spots, especially with the way BA called Cooper out multiple
Times during the year.

IMHO...

To think that Iupati is coming in to play anything else other than left guard is ludicrous. The only movement you'll see on the line, barring any further signings, will be Cooper to right guard and Larson to center.

Maybe coming from you people will understand.

Keim and Arians have both verbalized the need for better production and competition at the OG spots. Signing Iupati is a statement that there will only be a competition at one OG spot.

Cooper has gone from top 10 pick and future at LG, to fighting for the starting RG spot in his third season. Fact. This is the coaching staff telling him to get better or you will be gone.

It's an upgrade. Period. Cooper knows where he stands regardless of this signing.

This line just got much better. Wouldn't mind an upgrade at center either.

i think this is mostly right

i also think that it says that Keim / Mike B / Arians beleive that "servicable" isnt good enough -- even at the risk of doing a public mea culpa on a high draft pick (contrast that with Whis' insistance on Levi at LT)

an interior line of Cooper / Sendlein / Larsen would have been servicable but likley not good enough to go head to head with the Seahawks and other good defenses in the league

MJ just tweeted the the team is also interested in AQ Shipley

You have to appreciate the fact that the best way to get another 2-3 productive years out of Carson Palmer is to protect him and let him hand the ball off 25 times a game

Don't know what happened to Shipley, from ESPN:

Shipley, for a reason that nobody in the organization would discuss, lost his job to Harrison in Week 5. Shipley not only lost the job, he fell to third on the depth chart behind Holmes. The Colts stuck with Harrison early on despite his struggles snapping the ball to Luck. That changed in Week 16 when the Colts finally benched Harrison in favor of Holmes

Either Shipley po'd someone or there is something else going on with him.

How about everyone just settle down and stop acting like you can read minds. Either Cooper seizes the starting job this year or he's a failed experiment. Let's have a little GD faith in the guy. He played well when he was on the field. Obviously the line as a whole is going to be better this year now that we've added a perennial pro bowler.

When I've become the voice of reason the peeing contest has gone too far.

This is not based on any objective evaluation of his actual play on the football field.

Yeah we know your ability to evaluate talent dominates everything else on this board. We get it. Hey everyone, look at how brilliant K9 is! I wonder why half the board has you on block. You just can't stop acting like a 13 year old and going NUH UH I'M RIGHT no matter how many "OK maybe knock it off" posts there are.

You're right Head Scout K9, it must be that Kerwyqyaun Williams ran for 100 yards in the only game Cooper played because of his massive level of talent.

You are a very stupid person if you can't see that Cooper has talent. Goodbye. Keep trying to show everyone how right you are. Cite more made up Pro Football Focus stats. You'll win 'em over yet champ.
