ESPN reports: In a surprising move, the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday abruptly released starting strong safety Donovin Darius, a nine-year veteran who started more games on defense than anyone in franchise history.

Great player and great guy, I would love to go after this guy.

I like Darius, but he's not the player he used to be. He's coming off a severe ankle injury. I mean, if it's for a one-year "prove it" contract, maybe. But he's not beating out Adrian Wilson for a job, and if we wanted another strong safety playing next to Wilson, we likely would have re-signed Robert Griffith.

The last thing we need right now is a safety...especially since there's no money left.

He'll probably go to the Pats since they seem to be picking up everybody this year...:)

something to consider--

a team's 3rd and 4th safety HAVE to play special teams -- its virtually a requirement based on roster numbers

I just dont see Donavan Darius playing alot of special teams at this point in this career.

DB D Darius is not a fit for the Cardinals. New HC Whiz does not have to win this year. Every new HC gets a honeymoon of, at least, one year.

Well, he'd damn well better win at a decent rate this year. Honeymoon or no, our new coach said he would do his best to utilitize our talent to compete right now, and suddenly we feel like we're in rebuilding mode. We had better compete, or else I will be very angry.

Of course, how often does this team make me very happy? Ugh.

The Huddle

Yesterday, on The Huddle, with John Clayton and Jeremy Green, they were discussing Darius and the teams that might sign him. They started with the usual suspects, Carolina, New Orleans and Philadelphia and then Clayton said that the "sleeper" team was the Arizona Cardinals. He based his "guess" on the fact that the other three teams in the NFC West had super runners (Jackson, Gore and Alexander) and that Darius' forte is stopping the run(which he pointed out that we couldn't do, last year), and that he would be a big help to Wilson. Green said, "No way", and IMO he correctly described Darius as a clone of AW and that the team need a safety that complemented AW and not one that duplicated him. At least it was fun hearing football people talk about the Cards.

The Cardinals did a decent job of stopping the run, ranking 16th in yards and 18th in ypc. It was the pass defense that was awful, leading to yet another ranking in the bottom 10 in either points or yards allowed for our defense. It was the 2nd year in a row that the Cards were ok against the run.

I would have to agree with Green that the Cards do not need another run defender at safety.

Not to mention that our new 3-4 base defense is one designed especially for stopping the run. Scheme alone will help control run defenses, and should get us into the Top 12 or so.

The question remains whether we'll be able to get to the quarterback or prevent receivers from catching the ball.
