Jaguars | Bryant Doesn’t Expect To Be Back - from www.KFFL.com
Sun, 4 May 2003 12:29:50 -0700

Updating previous reports, Bart Hubbuch for the Florida Times-Union reports Jacksonville Jaguars CB Fernando Bryant, who has one year remaining on his contract, doesn’t believe he will be back with the team next season, In fact, he said he wouldn’t be surprised if the team released him on June 1, when he is due a $500,000 roster bonus.

<p>Is this guy any good and would he be able to help the Cards backfield?

Good? Who knows? But, just about anyone could help the defensive backfield. Getting them to sign, and play here, is another story.

Bryant would step in and immediately be our second best corner at worst. At best he can be a shut down type corner.

If he is release, I hope the Cards come at him hard. He could really help out our secondary.

I agree he may even be our best CB!

Which makes me think the guy would be looking for some good dough! Which I personally donthave a problem with we need to use up that cap space somewhere ti might as well be there!

If we signed him it would be a major coup.

He is a pretty good player, who can shutdown quality receivers when motivated. If we added him, we could have one of the better secondaries in football.

I would love to have this problem. I think that David Barrett proved that he is an above average corner in the NFL. If we were to add F. Bryant, it would provide more competition in addition to depth at the CB position.

I noticed at the fan fest that Barrett got bigger in his upper body and he was step for step witht the WR's.

Also, Renaldo Hill was making some nice plays. He is a quality reserve. A good draft pick in the 7th round of the 2001 draft.

Agreed..

I too think Bryant is a skilled CB. If he were to become a June 1st casualty, I would hope that the Cards would do damn near whatever it takes to get him dressed in Red. Adding him could make our D-line not look so bad. Almost give the assumption you(the Card big-wigs) had a "plan" pre/post draft an such.

Bryant would be a great addition. Coach Mac said he would make a play for a CB after the June 1 cuts. Maybe they will have more success that they did with Colvin or Holliday.
Although, if the Cardinals offered the best deal and the players chose to sign elsewhere, you can't blame Coach Mac and Rod for that.

Your last sentence is patently wrong IMO. Rod Graves' job is about more than just opening up the checkbook - the guy has to be a salesman as well and so far with the most important free agents - he hasn't shown himself well in that area yet.

Bryant is a nice player. Hopefully, there is some truth to this. He's young enough I think the Cards' would throw some good cash at him. He'd be a good addition. Let's hope.

We have enough cap space to add Bryant if he would come. We play in the West with the 49ers and Rams who throw the ball alot one more good cover guy will only help the team. Now if we could get a good dlineman as well this should be a good season.

You need (at least) 3 outstanding corners to participate in the NFC West "track meet."

While I'm not at all comfortable with our tandem of Starks and Barrett, the trio of Starks, Bryant and Barrett would be just fine.

(Assuming, of course, that Bryant is good as you all say he is).

Whatever man. I'd like to see you go out and try to sell someone a Yugo, and convince them that next year it will magicly turn into a Porsche.

Some people think that Graves has some a really easy job.

If I were a player and all things remain equal (ceteris paribus) there is NO way that I would sign with the Cards just because their history sucks and the fan base sucks.

Colvin was smart to sign in NE and Holliday was smart to sign in KC. They both are going to teams that get a lot of fan support and have a decent chance of being a winner.

The journey of 1000 begins with a single step...

Until this fanchise can post a couple of winning seasons, coupled with a playoff appearance or two, this will continue to be the case with free agents.

The Cardinals greatest resent failure was not capitalizing better upon their sucess in 1998. Instead of retaining their leadership core, they gutted out their offense and defense in favor of signing Plummer to a huge (and undeserving) contract.

Bryant is better than Barrett and might even be better than Starks. The question I have is why on earth would JAX cut their top corner (by far) even for cap relief? I think he would be a nice addition. The problem again will be, will the Cards go after him, will they go after him with gusto, and then will he sign?

I think the Cards would consider him but Ken shows one of the main things holding the Cards back. Success. They need CONSISTENT success to get FAs to sign here. Until that happens, they will be signing mid level FAs pretty regularly and not getting the top tier guys in here.

Three words about how the Cardinals need to pursue Fernando Bryant:

STINK ON $HIT.

They need to be all over this guy if he gets cut!

unfortunately the only stink is gonna be the two-day wait period after bryant comes to phoenix, during which he'll sign with another club.

i disagree with an earlier post that claimed that barrett has proved he is an above average nfl corner. if anything, he's average. a good d-line could make him look better, but thus far, he's hardly above-average. bryant would beat him out for the starting position easily. that said, the trio of starks, bryant, and barrett with a better passrush (god i hope ed's right about wendell waking up and i hope all the homers are right about pace being a legit first-rounder) could be excellent, particularly if wilson does step up his game and dexter jackson is not larry brown. that's a lotta "if"s, but this is the time of year to hope for the "if"s, come to think of it, maybe we should rename the cards to the ARIZONA IFs.

It looks like Jax is in building mode. It may take a little time for Leftwich to become starter material, so they may be thinking 2-3 years down the road. By then, Bryant will be in his 30's. I could be wrong, but hey, if they want to cut him. It's all good.
