Why do people think the cap is going down? When the NFL signs their new network deal, it will skyrocket. Fans being at the games is not comparable to TV money. Then, when fans come back, which I'm guessing will be shortly after election day and all this stuff is over, there will be no cap implications at all.

I'd be careful with the blanket prognostications. This is a Big Boy deal. History will ratify or undercut the wisdom of either side of this blockbuster.

Because it is based on previous years revenue. They know it's going down and already capped how low is can go and will spread out the loses over three years. The lowest it can be is $175 million or about $12 million lower than 2020.

@bankybruce said it correctly. I can't see how the cap wont be at exactly 175mm next offseason. And maybe even the one after that as well.

Remember.... NFL owners are very interested in a profitable business, and they (The NFL) wanted to spread the revenue losses over a 10 year period as a way to soften the blow a bit. Now that they have collectively bargained only 4..... they will do everything they can to recoup the losses of empty stadiums, and the costs to run a franchise in segments of 25% per year.

In short..... The next two offseasons will see a ton of 4mm to 9mm per-year players with little to no dead money hits get the ax.

And it will make any team looking to renegotiate deals, or sign rookies to new contracts much harder. DHop & Jamal Adams are just two examples.

On #Jets conf call, Joe Douglas disputes that he reneged on promise to Jamal Adams: "I never promised him an offer." Of the Adams as "Jet for life" talk, Douglas said, "That certainly was the play when I first arrived here."

Every year, the Seahawks make a major impact signing. Every year fans here say it’s going to kill their cap and they’re going to screw themselves for the future. Every year save 1 of the last 8 seasons they’ve proven those statements wrong and have been both better than us AND in the playoffs.

It’s comical at this point.

Yep, they now have one of the best Safety duos in the NFL (Adams, Diggs). With Wilson at QB he is somehow able to make due with a terrible OL and do just enough to win games. I'm not counting out the Seahawks as long as Wilson is healthy.

this is a very good move for SEA this year.

after that......i dont know. As Football Outsiders said:

giving up 2 #1s for an outstanding player isn't a problem. Paying a giant contract for an outstanding player isn't a problem. Doing both is a problem.

I think this move + their first round pick this year says that this is Bobby Wagner's last year in SEA (and KJ Wright too, this is the last year of his contract). Jordyn Brooks better work.

the NFL is a year to year league -- especially when your SB window is open.

I just think that SEA could have spent the its 2021 #1 and acquired Trent Williams, and at least had two good OTs to form the basis of their line.

that would scare me more.

This makes them better for the next two years and maybe three. They will restructure Wilson and go for it. Around 2022-23 they’ll be toast.

I think they’re a SB contender with the ascension of their skill players.

Also remember Bobby Wagner is getting hella paid right now. He may be a casualty in a year or so.

2021 - 17mm cap hit. 7.5mm in dead money
2022 - 20mm cap hit. 3.5mm in dead money

I think they re-sign/structure him instead.

Jamal Adams, in his first press conference as a Seahawk, said several former Jets teammates called him. "They said they’re going to miss me, they love me. And it’s the same back. I have no hate in my heart towards anyone – Joe (Douglas), Adam Gase, anyone. I wish them all well."

Yeah, this looks like a really bad trade.

I would never give up two first rounders for any safety. Position just is not worth that - then they are going to have to eat up big time cap space on a safety.

Might make them better this year, but a stupid move for the long run.
I think the only safeties I would have given up that jack for would be prime:

Lott
Reed

Also of note......

They suck this year. Don't have their 1st rounder next year. And Bobby & Jamal are about to take up a huge chunk of their cap.

Roughly 30mm between them in 2022. And Russ will be at 37mm by himself.

I never would have thought he would essentially be a small LB at this point. Crazy how he has fallen off.

Lots of people critiquing a Seattle front office which has been way more succesfull than ours has been.

Man, when you really look at their drafts & FA signings in the past 5-6 years, I don’t think any team in the league has been worse. Including us.
