Colts | James feels his Colts' days are over
Thu, 2 Feb 2006 21:16:04 -0800

Mike Chappell, of the Indianapolis Star, reports Indianapolis Colts RB Edgerrin James has resigned himself to the fact he won't be with the team in 2006. "I don't see nothing happening,'' he said Thursday night, Feb. 2, after a taping session in Detroit with the NFL Network. "You can read between the lines and from the things I'm hearing, nothing's going to happen." The team had no comment on James' statements. When the veteran free agent market opens March 3, he'll see who's interested in a consummate running back who has rushed for a club-record 9,226 yards and amassed 12,065 total yards from scrimmage. "Maybe I'll get to a situation where somebody appreciates me,'' James said. "I'm going to always be a ballplayer. You know I've got game. You can't knock what I do."

I watched Edgerrin James' on NFL Network last night as he was being interviewed by Rich Eisen along with Clinton Portis and Willis McGahee.

If "1st impressions" actually mean anything, I was very disturbed by his demeanor during the segment. He was almost lying down in the chair and had a very cocky attitude towards Eisen. His answers to questions were borderline "why am I talking to you" and he generally came across as a "punk".

There is no questioning his talents and I have no knowledge of him being a "problem" player, but if I were a team evaluating whether or not to consider him as a FA (especially with the calibre of other RB's out there), his attitude as demonstrated would certainly be turning me off.

To be fair. James has never had an attitude problem or off-field issues like so many other players from Miami.

As far as I know, he's never been a problem on or off the field.

The only issue I have ever heard about is his tendency to work out with his personal trainer in Miami as oppossed to team work outs in the off season. If he signed here, that could be a problem. Espically with how much Green demands 100% participation at OTA's and team workouts.

As far as Edge's demeanor. Nothing we haven't seen before. And I'm sure it's nothing Green or his coaching staff haven't dealt with before. No biggie for me personally.

I don't care how he sits in a chair. Or the way he answers a reporters questions. I care if he is a team player. If he is any good and can add something to our growing team. It appears he is a very good RB, with a huge amount of talent, who would also sell tickets. He has a name that is know and has had huge success. That all being said I don't belive that he will be here and things (money) have a way of working out when your playing with a proven playoff team that has the talent to go all the way.

James has never been a good interviewee. I've seen several over the years and he is not charismatic or engaging... so what. I would love to see him in AZ next year. If there is a spash to be made in FA by the Cards, he makes the most sense $ for $. Alexander cannot be tagged by Seattle but it seems likely that he and Holmgren have settled their past issues. James will come at a slightly lower price and you get a back that has shown he can come back after major injury.

It would be great if we had one of his former teammates, like Macklin, talk up AZ and the changes that are happening and get him to seriously consider the desert...

James is a complete paradox in that he is a total thug (which is understandable when you realize where he grew up) and all about the money, yet is a hard worker and the consumate team player. He just wants to be appreicated and in terms of football intelligence, he is off the charts. with QB's the ability to talk well and lead men is important to me (paging Josh McCown...) but in my RB, as long as he is smart enough to pick up a blitz and know the down and distance, i could care less.

James is driven by money but in his case, thats not a bad thing...

ANd for the Cardinals, thats a VERY good thing. I have no question I would take him over Alexander if the money is equal...

I wont get into though unless anyone is curious.....

The biggest advantage to Edge versus Alexander is that Edge is a full year younger, which means you are more likely to see value for his entire contract. In addition, Edge is a hell of a pass blocker and receiver. He is a 3 down back, Alexander is a 2 down back.

I would be happy with either of these in this order: Edge, Alexander, Williams, Foster, J. Lewis

When you look at the kind of running backs available this year, just get one of these top end guys and spend your draft picks elsewhere.

It depends what you consider a problem. James has been a persistent problem to the Colts because of his contract, he's never happy. He's one of those guys who signs a new deal and then a month later isn't happy when someone else signs a better deal.

Now that's not the same as shooting off a gun in a public street or some of the other stuff NFL players keep doing, but one of the reasons the Colts are handling his contract this way is they're just sick and tired of his contract complaints.

great player though.

I would love to have James on this team, but if we dont fix our oline he will not produce here like he did for the colts. Could you imagine James going from a 1000 yard rusher to a 30 rushing yards pergame under our oline that would be very sad to see. If we do get him lets fix our oline first then sign James and hope things work out :)

And to think the year the Cards are selecting a RB, There is Jamal Lewis, Shaun Alexander and Thomas Jones. Cards end up with Jones, how lame

Being cocky towards a reporter is going to scare away approximately zero teams.

Somebody else can check the stats but I watched the Colts a lot this year and I think Edgerrin's play fell off a little. Very few gainers over 6 yds. Lots of 2 yds, 5 yds, 2yds, 4yds, that kind of sequence. He's on the downside.

Playing seven years on that lousy turf and having already had an acl surgery, it just seems to me he's more used up and slower than Alexander.

Conversely, he's a better blocker than Alexander and runs better in short yardage.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'd be pleased with either player but would pay more for Alexander.

Jim, didn't you say two years ago that James was done after his surgeries?

He has had two 1500 yard seasons since you said that and he didn't even play the last game.

Can we as Cardinal fans even fathom a single player with 1500 yards? We can't even sniff a 1000.

In any event, his rushing average was a respectable 4.2 a pop to go with 44 catches. Doesn't seem remotely like he is on the downside to me.

He didn't have many long runs but he lead the league in runs of 5-9 yards by a large margin. That's truthfully what we need, a consistent RB.

1500+ isnt too shabby, his average per carry was his career average (4.2). Tied for the most rushing TDs he's had. (13). Last year was a bit better, but I wouldnt worry about these stats.

It's a very impressive stat because he completly changed his running style after his injury. He used to be a guy who could take it to the house on every play.

But now he is a grinder type back with great strength and balance. He picks up tough yds without ever taking a hit. He picks up 3, 4 or 5 yds every time he gets a carry and is very consistant in that regard.

It seemed to me that he or all were alittle tipsy from the festivities.. Just me. He would be a step up over Shipp and a good mentor to JJ. That is just my thoughts

James would be amazing to have. He still one of the NFL's best backs and is one of the few 3 down guys. Anyone that wouldn't spend money on him must be crazy.

He's averaged 126 yards scrimmage per game in his career. Few players, if anybody, have topped that.

I don't see the Cards going after him. I also think that he would prefer to play in Florida. Jacksonville would be a good match.
